During a race the wheel jerks and grinds when close to the centre, at first I though I had a faulty wheel but after some research lots of people have reported this problem.
The thing is when navigating the menus the wheel is set to return to centre and at this point is very smooth and feels like a proper wheel that always trying to centre itself, but once you start a race it goes back to jerkying and making the grinding noise.
It might not be the wheel that’s at fault and could be forza 5 sending the wrong FFB information to the wheel and making the motors work against each other or something like that.
This was also discussed on the inside race sim review. The general consensus is the FFB is what causes the system to grind. So when you are in the menus there is no FFB: no FFB= no grinding.
As for being FM5’s fault that seems very unlikely seeing as this wheel ONLY works with FM5 and designed with FM5 in mind (don’t know if they worked with Turn 10 but they made a nice a pretty image on the box for it.
You bought a wheel with Helica Gears. That’s why you get the grinding noise & jerking. It was covered on InsideSimRacing review on YouTube. Plus Mad Catz wheel has no vibration.
My Thrustmaster TX, is belt driven with brushless motors. I have no grinding noise or jerking. Plus TX does have vibration.
@Rockefelluh Have inside sim racing discussed fixing of the wheel?, I like the wheel a lot and thought of trying some fixes like disabling one of the motors, or reversing one motor, or somehow disable ffb from forza 5 so the wheel is stuck in the smooth self returning mode, or a 3rd party firmware patch.
@gangrel Other faults of the mad catz wheel include the creaking collar that connects the wheel to the main body, and the ridiculously hard brake spring, looks as if the TX is the only decent choice but there are a few complaints about reliability on amazon which were probably the first batches and the fact amazon send out faulty stuff that’s been returned to them.
My launch batch TX works fine. Nov makes it 1 yrs old. Will get an even more serious workout when Project Cars comes out. Right now, about 140 hrs spent racing on it.
1 also have a launch TX and love it!!!. I have over 450 hours on it and no problems. I use the Basher adapter so I can use mt Fanatec Clubsport V2 pedals ( I highly recommend this if you can do it ). I have also been getting some chatter from Fanatec on a new wheel coming out possibly for the Xbox one from their Facebook page. Just small hints yet so no real announcement yet. They are counting down to something though.
The Xbox One console has created a new communication protocol for wheels which delivers unprecedented accuracy. Mad Catz’ new Pro Racing Force Feedback Wheel and Pedals system makes the most of this new protocol, while satisfying hardcore and casual racing fans alike. Mad Catz worked closely with the Forza Motorsport development team to craft a wheel that exactly matches the level of racing simulation taking place in the game. The Xbox One console is taking racing games farther than they have ever traveled before, and the Pro Racing wheel is an ideal ally for victory in Forza Motorsport 5."
Does this wheel work for PC? If so, test it out there and see if there is any difference.
Good to hear the TX is reliable, I’ll be getting that when I send the matcatz back, and later on the GT wheel and those pedals, I watched the sim racing review to wet my appetite, I’m usually more careful when buying stuff but the madcatz propaganda caught me out.
@Turns, there’s no drivers for the pc yet, my dad reckons the gears don’t mesh properly and the bearings are really cheap, he has built a lot of crane gearboxes at work and says the gears should not make any noise at all if done right.
