Losing saves - What can I do to prevent it?

So, I keep hearing these horror stories about how people are losing their saves, and by extension, all of the work that they’ve done up to that point… is there anything that can be done to prevent that from happening? Something one should do, or something one shouldn’t do to make it so their saves aren’t randomly wiped off the face of the servers?

Horror stories they certainly are and I really hope to see some comments in your thread. BUT I’m not sure if there’s anything we can do to prevent it besides not messing around with local saves on different hard drives etc. Hopefully SW guru’s like Snowowl and others will comment here. Only thing I always make sure of is to enforce a synchronize before shutting down which sometimes takes a few minutes. AND Snowowl suggests not to interrupt synchronizing, even if it takes several hours and not to run/use other apps while synchronizing is taking place.

I lost my profile to a corruption a few weeks ago. It happened when the game crashed as I was leaving a race and I spotted it immediately - as soon as I relaunched.

There may have been specific steps I could have taken in a specific order to recover my progress, but without knowing what had happened all I could do was follow the “recommended” steps, and those didn’t work. Maybe if I’d never tried to load my cloud save and had instead immediately deleted it and loaded from my local one, that might have worked, but without psychic powers I had no way of knowing that my cloud save was corrupt until I did try to load it.

I don’t think there’s anything I could have done differently to prevent the issue in the first place though. There’s not much you can do when a title crashes as it’s saving data.

Maybe we can recover from a crash, power interruption, etc., and maybe be lucky and only need to “repair” what remains. However, I must preface this by saying I’ve never had a crash or nor have I been tempted not to follow what I’m going to post below to properly close out a game session. So I’ve never, aside from “sync” that just doesn’t seem to want to function and each time that has happened I’ve got to Xbox Support and found it is Xbox Live, not “my” issue so have not attempted to “fix” anything.

Proper game shutdown when you’re done playing -
(1) Go back to the main screen in the game (usually with the triple-level horizontal bars, formerly the Start button, next to the Blue X.
(2) Use the Big X (glowing white on the controller) to send that screen in #1 to the main display in the Dashboard.
(3) Use the triple-level button again, and select Quit from the pop-up menu.

This securely closes out the game so it does not remain active locally or in the Cloud if you wish to play a different game or shut down the console.

IF you “lose” the game or have an interruption while saving data (Hard Restart):
1 – from the Dashboard, out of all games, hold the X button on the front of the console down until it shuts the system down.
2 – Disconnect the external power from the wall plug (or at least disconnect the wall-side connector on the power pack itself).
3 – WAIT until all power drains from the external power pack (no light, either white or dull orange showing on the pack).
4 – Reconnect the power supply to the electrical outlet.
5 – Restart the console in the usual manner, i.e., either with the controller or a short push on the X button on the front of the X1.
6 – WAIT until the console self-checks and fully boots to the Dashboard before attempting anything.

If you don’t disconnect the external power pack and let the power completely drain out, the system is still retaining “old” stuff and not resetting.

IF you do the above, and when you launch the game you get into the “sync” process, DO NOTHING ELSE on the console. Just let it run, and go help a neighbor or grab a book so you also stay off your Local Area Network (LAN) go give the Xbox One the undivided access instead of competing with streaming music or videos. Let the sync go until it reaches 100%, even if it hesitates several times, continue to Retry. This process can take hours - literally two to maybe six or eight hours.

Now, if you’ve not offered a sync, and you try to launch the game and it just won’t -
Put Forza Motorsport 6 in the main Dashboard screen, then use the three horizontal dash button (formerly Start on Xbox 360, just left of the Blue X button) to bring up a new menu for the game. Select Manage game, the in the Iinstalled area selected on the left panel, you may have up to 21 items show in the larger panel. Go right with the selector, and hover to highlight Forza Motorsport 6 (49.7 GB). Then use the three horizontal line button (formerly Start on Xbox 360, just left of the Blue X button) for Uninstall. ONLY the LOCAL game installation if given the choice.

When that completes, restart the Xbox One, then attempt to launch FM6 again and follow the instructions to reinstall. This, again, may take time and sync along the way, but have patience. Hopefully this has resurrected your information and put you back on the . . . ahem . . . right track.

Thank’s Snow, it’s that last part I needed and printed for emergencies.

Maybe. LOL! It is very difficult to diagnose from what someone posts in a message. We’re not there, seeing the same things the person is seeing. Never is the shutdown procedure discussed, only “I lost . . .” without a lot of critical details. Sometimes, especially when people have lost progress several times it becomes “something’s wrong with this game” which is not necessarily the truth, otherwise everyone would have the same problem.

I noticed F6 is one of those games that continue to run in the backround. A proper exit of the game when you are finished playing is needed. Always “quit game” when finished.

Excellent advice, Snowowl! I appreciate it. Something like that ought to be stickied somewhere, IMO.

A few hours ago F6 crashed and went to “load error, reconnect storage” and so on, pretty difficult to do when the game is installed purely on internal drive. I did all the Snowowl and other suggestions to no avail. I still get the load error message even after doing a complete reinstall of all the game, it will not run. However if i log into the xbox with a different profile the game runs perfectly. I AM SICK of this game, for three months i couldnt get to use multiplayer, Turn 10 were not interested in fixing the issues, I was far and away not the only player having these issues, all other online aspects of the game worked, just not the multiplayer, i recently by some “miracle” have been able to play onlinebut now the game has completely crapped out on me if i want to play as my chosen profile, the only other alternative is to restart the entire game from scratch again and hope the same thing doesnt happen again. I dont know if i want to do that. One thing i do know is that under UK trading regs any product sold MUST BE FIT FOR PURPOSE, this game is not fit for purpose, you only have to go thru this forum to see that. Turn 10 needs to sort out these programming errors or start thinking about making some serious gestures toward compensating for what is a defective product.

Answered in the other thread you started:

http://forums.forza.net/turn10_postst66675_LOAD-ERROR--Are-you-ever-going-to-sort-this-game-out.aspx

Please don’t make multiple posts about the same situation, it just confuses the issue.

Done all of this… didn’t work. what do I do?

Help please!!! can’t play forza 6 on my own profile, looks like I will lose everything, thanks forza, paid all this money, dlc, vip what happens to that?surely not right I have to buy again for new profile?any help massively appreciated thanks

Other than “cant play forza 6 on my own profile” what error message(s) have you seen? Have you tried any of these solutions (especially the full hard restart specifically as outlined) here: http://forums.forza.net/turn10_postsm528894_Losing-saves---What-can-I-do-to-prevent-it.aspx#post_528894

Sorry, unknown loading error has occurred please try again later, have tried all suggested fixes but none work, have made new profile and works fine but no VIP,driver level, gutted🚾

Ugh! Have you tried to delete your profile (gamertag) on the console, restart the Xbox One, and then download it again? Everything appears to be good on the Xbox servers currently: Xbox Support Sometimes the “profile” becomes corrupted, so: Xbox Support

NOTE: If you are uncomfortable doing removing/retrieving your profile yourself, call Xbox Support (linked from the pages above) and have a tech guide you through it in person. It is fairly easy, but may seem daunting. If that doesn’t work, I would send all the details of what you’ve done in an email to Turn 10 at forzafb@microsoft.com and ask them to check whatever they can on the servers to discover any corruption.

I think the biggest thing that’s causing these crashes is people not fully quitting the game or leaving it local for too long while they do other things. While you are playing a game, your xbox is consistently saving data to the cloud and keeping it in sync, so if you shut off your xbox without quitting the game first there’s a possibility of the cloud becoming confused and thinking that the game has been corrupted. This is rare but you should always fully quit your game from the dashboard before turning off your xbox.

Also, here’s a note take from the xbox cloud storage FAQ: “NOTE: A regular connection to Xbox Live is required to keep your data in sync. Playing offline may cause your cloud data to become out of date. Your data refreshes each time you connect to Xbox Live.”

This means that if you decide to play offline, or suddenly lose xbox live connection for whatever reason, your game sync will not be updated and can lead to further problems, so always make sure that you’re connected to xbox live with a secure internet connection before loading the game.

OK will try that, appreciate your time and assistance, thankyou, happy gaming

Did and always have shut down game,no internet issues, not played offline, game just broken, happened to a lot of people

Turn 10 please help I have tried Microsoft support, nothing, emailled turn10,nothing,did everything Snowowl suggested, nothing, this appears to be happening a lot, lost everything including paid for VIP,please please help, feeling completely dissatisfied at moment, show the community you care turn 10

so does turn 10 actually do anything about these lost saves…or is making an attempt on here to get help from them essentially futile?

just wondering if anyone has actually had any luck or if i should just delete what tiny bit of random cars and money thats left and restart all together
