Hoping some of you experienced tuners can offer some advice here.
I’ve been using a Legacy RS in the Class C Ghost league, and whilst my initial set-up has been “entertaining” and sideways in the true Colin McRae style, it has made me slow in competition. Biggest issue has been lift-off oversteer. I’ve been gradually tweaking the set-up and am beginning to cure it, but it’s still there. I’d originally gone for what I thought was needed on a 4WD car to cure the inherent understeer, so softer front ARB, more camber on the front than the rear, and a rearward bias on the diffs. I’m now running a more even front-rear set-up, which seems to help.
I don’t want to resort to just downloading someone else’s tune, as I want to try and achieve it myself, plus using a tune means I can’t then tweak it myself to suit different tracks etc.
decel on the rear diff you mean? I think mine is set pretty low, so would tie in with your suggestion. the front diff is set to very low single figures iirc, and the centre is just a touch rearward biased.
So I’ve not done much AWD since F2-F3 days, but as has been said, rear decel being too low does sound pretty likely as it is almost always too low on here by default.
I generally try and stick to within 5-15% of the rear accel setting as I find if they are too far apart it can cause the car to get out of shape easily as well (although there are always exceptions).
If it is more of a grip setup you can generally run it quite high eg. 70% rear accel and 60% rear decel, or even higher than that as it is AWD. I’ve been going with around 20% front accel and 0% decel, but not really messed around with AWD much so others might have different to say on the matter.
Tyre pressures might be worth thinking about as well as if they are too high it can be harder to get them to maintain enough traction or get traction back after they started to slip.
great, thanks for that Hot Wheels, I’ll give that a go. Tyre pressures i generally don’t stray too far from the default 30/30, just +/- 2 points on front or rear
Just had a quick tweak and test session, and around Brands GP circuit, I’ve knocked about 3 seconds off my laptimes thanks to this advice. It feels a lot more benign now, although it’s probably not what Colin would have wanted from his company car back in the day! lol
I’ve shared my tune, so I’d welcome any criticism, either positive or negative, on what you guys reckon to it.
Granted I’m new to tuning for racing (former drifter) but I’ve found lower deceleration generally helps. At least for AWD and RWD. I usually run a 25/35 ratio give or take some for RWD. AWD is 20 /20 and 35/20. Usually centered a little farther back. It’s helped me, but again I’m new to race tuning as well.
I wouldn’t know what’s high or low. I am just coming from drifting, and tunes for that is 100% different. FM5 and fm6 has ruined drifting though so why not learn to race. I just said what I’ve found to work for me. I’m always open to suggestions for tunes so I can improve racing. I also run TCS, manual with clutch and abs off. So I know that affects the overall aspect of part of the car.
well, it may be me just driving better, but raising the accel and decel settings on the rear diff does seem to have helped me somewhat. I’ve only done test driving, and class C time attack events since though, I have yet to test it in the white heat of actual competition. And to be honest, there I’m probably being limited by my lack of skills behind the controller rather than any poor setup choices! lol
I don’t think controllers are as limited as some think. Being a C class I Def see how raising it all has helped. I mainly race S and R class, which lowered helped me. We all also have different styles too, which will have an effect on the car. I may have my C class career tune uploaded, I can’t promise how competitive it may be.
I’ll put my B class somewhat power biased legacy RS setup here. For going in to C class I would probably just reduce tire size, (Widest stock compound tires) and use 1st stage rollcage instead of 2nd stage, and reduce power from it.

It has tiny bit of understeer in entry (as most AWD cars have) but soon as you get to throttle, the rear end steps out a bit.
Therefore if you brake in a relatively straight line, initiate the turn, and go flat out trough the turn it should be rather well balanced car.
on consecutive sweepers (like majority COTA full 1st section) you might notice that the rear end wants to become loose, but I see it quite manageable.
cool, thanks for posting that set-up Juggernaut, I’ll give those settings a go too. decent of you to post them up
I’ve always tended to wind the castor up to around 5.5-5.8 ish, never reduced it from stock, so will have a play with that too.
I think I fall in to the trap of automatically using the same sort of set-up tweaks I always do - more camber, more castor, softer front ARB’s and lower diff settings, without realising that sometimes, they may be counterproductive
I’ll be filing that away for further use. Literally, I made a folder on my laptop and when a tuner that I trust gives advice i copy and paste it to a blank Word sheet. Thank you sir. Good to see you on the forums again. Havent seen you much lately.
To be honest I haven’t been around too much since I bought FM5. But I have been looking trough every now and then. Most of the time I would like to comment someone has already said what I was about to say, I just don’t bother saying the same thing.
Also that I have had some struggles with the handling model and my preference to bit “unusual” cars, to be honest it’s making me bit slower than I like to admit.
I’m well in to LB top 500, but I still struggling every now and then as I can’t quite find equally skilled people, and that makes me feel much slower than I am.
I have a soft spot for the “unpopular” myself but this edition of the game has better suited my tuning style than FM5 I just couldn’t get it right on that one. Not that I’m going out and setting the tracks on fire in this one either but I did manage a few into the Top 500. But as the game is building steam I seem to be losing a little and if I get started again on the conditions currently being seen in the multiplayer lobbies I’m afraid I wont be able to stop typing obscenities. I mostly do the rivals and the ghost lobby in league play. Gone are the days of racing like you had some sense. It’s mostly the NFS/Horizon racing mentality now and I’d rather go outside and watch my grass grow than to take part in it.
