KING OF STYLE Street Legal Drift Series HQ Thread (Rd. 2, YAMANASHI, 8pm GMT October 1st 2016)

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Myself and the lads at ONI have had this idea for a Street Legal tournament for a while now. Back in Forza 4, we ran a one-off competition called “Project: DRIFT” that ran a similar style and format to D1. It helped us iron out a few kinks in the idea, and since then, we’ve been silently revising it, waiting for the right time to launch it’s return. And so, here we are.

This thread is under construction, so bear with us, but here are some of the rules and regs we have so far:

EVENT FORMAT

TANSO (SINGLES): 3 Single scored runs. 3 Judges score the run and an average is taken of all 3 scores in each run. In the case of 4 judges, lowest of 4 scores is dropped and the remaining 3 are averaged. In the case of 5 judges, lowest AND highest are dropped, remaining 3 are averaged. Highest run score out of all three runs constitutes final score. No practice runs. Points are scored for Tanso, but Tanso also acts as qualification for next stage.

TSUISO (TANDEMS): Top 16 scoring drivers make up a tournament bracket and do battle in traditional knock-out format, with additional 3rd place battle for both semi final eliminations. Points are scored in this stage of the event as well.

SCORING

Three championship tables are monitored: Tanso Standings, Tsuiso Standings & Overall Standings, which combines Tanso & Tsuiso.

CAR REGULATIONS

Cars must be built in such a way that they are deemed street legal in accordance to Japanese Road Safety Laws. Additionally, some added restrictions will be enforced to ensure a closely competitive and highly-skilled field of drivers. The restrictions are as follows:

Front engined RWD platforms only (conversions permitted)
Car power <450hp (must be under, cannot be 450hp)
Race Transmission is NOT permitted
Race Rollcages are NOT permitted (in accordance with Japanese law)
Race/Drag tyres are NOT permitted. Furthermore, maximum allowable tyre width on both front and rear is 245mm.
Production models ONLY (no one-off or race models)
No Tune-adjustable Aero (non-adjustables are allowed)

JUDGING

Judging will take into account Line, Style, Angle & Speed, with the concept of working from a perfect score (100) downward for every deductable nuance. Deductions are not rigid; a single tyre drop that is just over the line will not be deducted as much as a single tyre drop that is very comfortably over the line.

There are no zeros in Tanso, but in the event of straightens, massive deductions will be made but run scoring will not end, so we encourage drivers to finish the run in these situations. In the event of a spin or a complete off-course, massive deductions will be made and runs will cease. If, for example, a driver completes 60% of the course and then spins out, a deduction similar to a straighten will be made, and the final score will be further diminished to only 60% of it’s worth. So, if the driver gets a 55 after a massive deduction, 60% of 55 = 33.

As we discovered with this new scoring system in Project: DRIFT, we found that complete runs would almost always score above 85, similar to D1’s DOSS scoring system. We believe this is more fairly representative of the abilities of everyone involved, as opposed to the “ambiguous at best, completely inaccurate at worst” Formula D style of judging which is commonly used on Forza, where a perfectly good run will only score a driver a 60 (Hello Andy Gray).

In Tsuiso runs, we will be implementing 50 and 60 rolls, but we will also be taking a revised approach to judging proximity. Nobody wants to see a four car length gap before either driver initiates, so judging of proximity will always revolve around “starting gap”. If, for example, the lead car initiates with a two car length lead, then throughout the run the chase car only gets the gap down to 1.5 car lengths, proximity advantage will still go to the chase car, for reeling in the lead car effectively. Proximity gains from the lead car earned through missed clips, unsportsmanlike driving, corrections or incorrect lines through corners will not be counted as a proximity advantage.

Furthermore, we will be implementing a redo clause for “Launch violations”. If the judges feel that a gap going into initiation is too large, and that it is caused by the LEAD driver not being considerate to the chase in allowing them to stick with them, they will call for a “Blast-off offence”. The lead driver will receive a warning, and should it happen again, they will have their run heavily penalised. If the judges feel that a gap going into initiation is too large, and it is caused by the CHASE driver choosing not to run close enough to the lead car to try and earn a bigger proximity advantage by utilising the resultant clean track to pull in the lead driver, the judges will call for a “Sandbagging offence”. The chase driver will receive a warning, and similarly will be heavy penalised on their run should a second violation during a battle occur. While warnings will reset after each battle, continued patterns of behaviour such as this from any driver in a round, or across the season, may result in a penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Lag issues will be taken into consideration, but we can only judge what we see. It is up to the drivers to ensure they have stable connections.

On a lighter note, as judges we know that sometimes drivers don’t agree with our calls. Rather than say to drivers “if you don’t like it, leave”, we encourage driver to voice their concerns to us so we can work with them in coming up with a solution. We want this to be a fun event for all the drivers competing. Having said that, we do ask that you are not abusive to coordinating staff. We give up time in our sometimes very busy schedule to ensure that the drift community has the ability to compete in fair, unbiased, equal opportunity tournaments. So you can imagine how much it would irritate us if a driver who was angry at a loss blows up at us because we may have made a bad call. We understand that bad calls suck, and if we do make them (which we probably will at some point, no competition ever passes without at least one), please be thoughtful about how you approach it. If you calmly come to us privately and show us your case, we can discuss it with you at the appropriate time and work out a solution. The last thing we want to do is affect a highly-competitive tournament because we put the wrong driver through, so we would appreciate the feedback.

As we said, this is under construction, we encourage your feedback and thoughts on this tournament, as we want to make comp drifting fun for everyone again!

Finally! A Forza drift event with scoring I like!!! Sign me up ASAP! Love the track selection, this will be a great tournament

Thank you! I know the entire team is hoping this will bring a fun new experience to the community! Personally I feel we’ve been long overdue a change up in scoring style in community comps for a few years now. Drifters just aren’t rewarded as much as they should be for putting down killer runs anymore. Hopefully, with the experienced and non-biased panel of judges we have, we can achieve that. Would love to have you on board!

Hey man I’d love too sign up GT:scrape nati0n

Couldn’t agree more on the scoring system comment, I’ll definitely get the rest of the team and whatever friends I can to sign up as well. If you need any help or whatever just shoot me a message on Xbox, Good luck on getting things worked out and set up. Can’t wait to get this started

Me neither haha, but yeah by all means bring as many as you can. We’ll be reaching out to drivers through this HQ thread anyway in between rounds for feedback notes. Can’t guarantee the first one won’t have at least one issues, but we’ll work closely with you guys to make sure it works for everyone involved.

We will try and get the first event scheduled for September, and we’ll try and keep it a one-day thing. Sorry for the delay but I’ve got lots of new job interviews I have to attend in the next couple of weeks then I’m off DJing for a festival in Hertfordshire. But we’ll hopefully have something up before then anyway.

Sign me up. Also message me on Xbox jj
