I played Forza games for years and finally got a wheel. I have many thoughts

I’ve played every Forza game going back to 4 and got a wheel last week. And honestly the experience has been anything but smooth. For context, I have a MOZA R3 wheel and play on PC.

For starters, menus. You cannot navigate menus with buttons on wheels? The buttons aren’t even bindable. I have no idea why it’s like this but I actually had to plug back in my Xbox controller just for menu navigation (even though my wheel has Xbox buttons on it)

Wheel calibration really is a mess. It probably took about 4 days before I found settings that worked for me. Here’s what I use. Even then there’s still problems. I have to adjust the force feedback PER CAR in the tuning menu myself when I think the game should be able to do this automatically for me. It doesn’t make sense that some cars are set up with little to no feedback and you need to crank it up yourself and open up telemetry menus just to figure it out.

And finally, the gameplay itself. This part really isn’t a critique, but an observation. Wheel is way harder than I was expecting. This game did a really great job letting you drive fast with a controller because with simulation steering you really get a feel for all the physics effects going
On. I went from 4800 skill rating to 4400 and I’m still falling and have yet to get a podium finish

You should be able to navigate the menu using you’re wheel, unless it’s a Moza-specific issue

If your overall FFB settings on wheelbase and in game are defaulted to 100, you should rarely have to increase per-car (in many cases, I have to decrease)

What you’ll likely find is that a ton of cars need steering lock range to be reduced to as low as ~70% on some cars in order to make them intuitive and responsive enough

Here’s my heretical, unpopular piece of advice: keep steering on ‘normal’ using the wheel. You still have full use of steering range (whereas controller users get the ends of their steering ranges filtered based on speed), you still have the same levels of response when turning the wheel, you just don’t deal with the game’s AWFUL sim twitch trying to sneak its way into your wheelbase.

It creates a very unintuitive experience. Trust me, normal steering is just as fast, doesn’t affect FFB information, still requires the exact same basic inputs (eg counter steering when necessary), it just doesn’t act all stupid when the front needs to change directions in relation to the rear

There’s some Reddit threads and forum posts about it. Basically from what I understand if the wheel buttons work for menu navigation out the box you are good but if they don’t there’s nothing you can do. You can only bind the wheel buttons to driving tasks, not menu tasks

That’s rough. :frowning:

True story. I was so mad at how crappy my brand new wheel was, that I didn’t use it for months. Still barely use it. My 150 dollar wheel was better than my 650 dollar wheel. What really sucks is how little support there is from the manufacturer. Kind of ridiculous that nobodies on the internet have to show you what settings to use.

My Fanatec CSL with the Xbox rally wheel combo worked great on Xbox.

On my PC the buttons barely work; I can confirm with A and use the integrated D-pad toggle stick. But to cancel I have to use my controller or keyboard.

Not that this helps, but I do not think it is entirely who made your wheel and is moreso MS just not doing a proper job of wheel integration on the PC version of the game.

Which given all the other discussions of where they have not done nearly enough with the game fits the pattern of them not having the staff/budget/direction/passion to make a truly good game.

Are you using your own setup or one of the pre-existing Fanatec pre-sets? I started with using one of the User Defined Re-nameable setups. The reason I used it on PC is because; I am running a Thrustmaster shifter, and I couldn’t get it to work with the Fanatec pre-sets. I got to double check my settings, but I’ll correct the name and look at some of my button bindings.

Edit:

On the “Input” tab in the Settings menu. The option I am using is called a Copyable Blank Layout. I renamed my setup as “Wilko CSL-DD & TH8A”
With it I am able to assign just about any on track function to my WRC wheel. I was also able to set my look buttons as ‘LSB’ for look left, and ‘B’ for look right. ‘LT’ is my rear view button.

As for A,B,X and, Y in the menus, they work like an Xbox controller for some reason. Even the shifter paddles act like the bumpers in the menu.

I am using my CSL-DD in Native PC mode (Red light). I did try it in Compatibility mode (Yellow) and got a lot of weirdness out of the Pedals. They kept changing to CSP V3s. I have the CSL-Elite LC V1 pedals, and its loadcell needs way more force than the 90KG that the CSP v3 is looking for.

Just realized you’re on the old belt driven base… I am unsure why the WRC wheel isn’t being recognized. I take it the firmware is up to date on your gear? Other than possible firmware being outdated, Its definitely an issue that Turn 10 should rectify. The game is still in active support and they should always update the steering wheel compatibility. While the game is actively supported they should also make improvements to the default FFB so, new users will have an enjoyable experience before needing to make adjustments.

No I have the CSL DD 8Nm. It is most assuredly not belt driven.

And if I feel like fighting with this insipid game at some point later, I will look into your settings advice.

For now though, this game is dead to me until they eliminate FoMo entirely and put every limited availability car for sale in the dealerships.

I am tired of rewarding player-hostile game design and being told it’s actually a good thing because “reasons”.

the FOMO is most certainly not a good thing, no matter what the reason is. I may be one of the FM23 defenders… At least I believe I have that sort of a reputation on this site but, the way they are using FOMO in this game is one of its biggest failings. If there are plans to change it, I hope they implement it ASAP. It’s become more than tiring.

I hope the upcoming May update is all that and a bag of Doritos, cause if it’s just more of business as usual, I think that’s going to push a lot more players off the game.
