In real racing do they just randomly place racers? No they qualify first and the fastest and put in front and the slowest in the back. Is real racing just hot lapping no of course not. But if is only sane, safe and sensible to put the fast in the front in the slow in the back, it does help avoid the pile ups so common in Forza online racing.
I think we should qualify first or go by the leader board times.
No, but in real racing people are grouped together by their skill levels much more than in forza. If the racing was all in like skill then sure put the guys who have earned it up front. I could be matched up with you or I could be matched up with ONR Chronic or anyone else for that matter, there is no saying that we are going to be of similar skill set. Also, it makes more sense to have the faster guys start in the rear of the pack. They should in theory understand braking points better and should be more cautious of drivers… This would take a lot of the first corner pileups out. If you put the lesser skilled up front who may brake too late and run through a corner a knowledgeable driver will hang back wait for this and take the corner as if theres noone there (because there would be noone there).
Many times I have seen lesser skilled (beginners) make a newbie mistake and take out 3, 4 and even 5 cars in the first or second corner or sometimes even the 3rd or 4th corner (and I have seen them take out some of the best drivers in Forza) Now I have nothing against beginners (we all were at one time) I just think they should be in the back if they make a mistake there the only take out them self or maybe the one other guy in the back.
Again there is a good reason for qualifying in real races, now that may not be piratical for most online races being they are so short. But using our LB time as someone suggested is piratical and I think it could work out pretty well.
Have the 1st lap “ghost mode” for all which would basically be a qualifying lap. The best racers would cross the second lap in natural order and the Certified race would automatically start at that point (when the leader finishes the 1st lap) . In other words a 5 lap race would actually be 6 laps(1st in ghost mode). The 1st ghost lap would be random grid.
As previously stated this idea would help to solve 2 problems; Grid and first corner wrecks. I’m sure that a race timer could be extended for 30 seconds or so to eliminate DNF. Since this is a video game sometimes reality has to be adjusted to make it work for everyone. Thanks.
Any potential wreckers would remain as “ghosts” until they completed the 1st “ghost mode qualifying lap.” That would eliminate the 1st corner mayhem and Grid complaints, hopefully. It’s worth a try in my opinion.
Online public lobbies is something different than an organized race.
For an organized race I would like the ability to qualify and order the grid based on qualifying results as that seems to be the same standard applied to most forms of racing. I also like the idea of reversing the grid for the second heat on a 2-heat event.
For public lobbies I actually like the structure of the C-B-A-S multi class races and order the grid in reverse PI. I don’t have any problem with racing and overtaking to position as long as its more than a single lap. I think people forget that you don’t have to be first into the first corner to win the race.
I don’t like starting at the back in single player mode. Especially for the more novice racers I think if you finish in 8th place and then restart your next race should at least start you in 8th place. That way the novice racers gets an opportunity to start closer to the front of the pack. It becomes difficult to run down the car in first place on unbeatable. Similar to public lobbies I would prefer single player mode that has the fastest racers at the back of the pack.
5 laps its just a sprint, and there is nothing on the line. qualifying would be 40% the size of a race? Just not worth it to me. I’d rather be racing side by side in though turns at 8th place giving it all I got than running away with it in 1st.
I would like for it to be more like racing, but in order to do that the races would need to be longer, they need to do something about the DNF’s (wreckers and drivers that quit out otherwise it should be running order at the end of the race, not whether or not you finish in in 30 seconds after the leader. I like the choices/ slider method suggest by SatNite.
SP- slider 3 to 10laps (or more laps)
(SP it would be nice to have Drivatars actually drive like the drivers as well, slider for realism- unbeatable well isn’t always unbeatable. Me racing the good racers, that’s unbeatable, IMO. but it gives me something to strive for and it gives them the challenge of real racing. If you are racing at that level that is when qualifying is important. but right now, there is no reason)
MP maybe have an endurance lobby (10 laps +) and do what Smoky Knight says- ghost first lap. That’s a good method, IMO.
But lord would I hate to be in a 10+ lap race with a wrecker… Something has got to be done about that, and I wonder if a licensing system, and thus maybe that good be used for qualifying or matching players, could be implemented.
For online racing the grid should be arranged based on ability. That it isn’t is why hopper racing is abhorrent. This can easily be arranged by setting the grid ordering to lobby points. The good players will work their way to the front and then you’ll have the good players starting next to each other having good races. The poor players will be at the back and if they want to get to the front they’ll have to work to get good at the game. You have a few other benefits of lobby point grid ordering. Firstly not only finishing 1st means something, because you’ll get points for finishing 2nd, 3rd and so on encouraging consistent clean driving. Another benefit is that it will encourage people to stay in the lobby, which has to be a good thing.
