Horizon Badlands Expansion: Rally Rad or Rally Bad?

So we’re a solid week into the new expansion & I for one, am personally enjoying the new map, races, improved road layouts & the content overall.

By comparison, I think this is significantly better than the HWs expansion & offers a more balanced & realistic experience. With the exception of some GUI housekeeping items I think could improve, such as the auto-pinning of uncompleted challenges, & the absence of lower car classes in Rivals races (D & C), I think the content is pretty solid & has decent replay value.
I will say it’s also a bit disappointing that the progression of completing the challenges isn’t necessarily as initially described, (“Play it your way”) when you have to complete both Rally & Race modes across all three teams.

I know there’s been quite a range of opinions though, so where does it come in for you in terms of:

•Overall rating
•Graphics
•Gameplay
•Content
•Story progression
•Replay value

*For reference: what platform are you playing on & has this contributed to your experience, good or bad, since the updates? I’m playing on XSX w/controller & have one game lock while exiting a race, otherwise, performance has remained consistent so far.

•Overall rating : Let’s get back to that as last

•Graphics : Fine, mostly. Not seen the issues some mentioned and aside from two points no complaints. First point (is it a graphics issue ?) Longer Night. Felt like a lie. Actual night, as always, still isn’t really dark. And the length seems to have all been added in dusk and dawn which might as well be day. And that “extra” length is all of about 10 minutes. Full dark is about the same 10 minutes it was before.

•Gameplay : Fine, again no issues here.

•Content : Fine as well.

•Story progression : Fine, except… forcing us again to “play it THEIR way” and rush through most of it to get to the FOMO chores of the week for completionists, just like with the Hot Wheels expansion. FAIL ! Ruins this part and more, for me.

•Replay value : NONE. Thanks largely to the forced rush of the campaign/story element. I really doubt I’ll revisit it. Might not even bother finishing the remaining chores to just get the annoying pins to stop popping. That as much as the rest keeps me from wanting to visit just to cruise or even work on the chores there. Me : “Let’s do this today.” GAME : NO ! DO THIS PIN NOW ! …idiocy.

On Xbox One. Controller (speaking of which, yeah, fix the wheel issues already). A few crashes to dashboard through the week (not quite daily), a weird graphics glitch one time (semi transparent canyon walls), but none of the complaints about frame bog in the desert or some of the other issues.

So, summary and back to…

•Overall rating : OK. Not great. It could have been except for the garbage rush to release what felt like an untested and unready product (all the complaints of many new bugs, returns of old bugs, and the whole steam roll out which may not be the game’s fault but it fits the theme of rushed and untested) and the stupid decision to force a FOMO rush through, again. Let’s call it a 4 out of 10.

This effects me the same way & I agree that it’s annoying enough to make you not want to return to constantly unpin it from your screen. There are so many other interactive aspects to the game that can be disabled, WHY not this? Forced engagement is the only conclusion I can draw & I even succumbed to it myself at one point to just MAKE IT STOP!! But it’s ridiculous to have to engage in activities you’re not interested in completing just for some relief. I also don’t care for the progression bars for each team locked to the screen.

Some good points; thanks for sharing.

overall rating maybe 7/10
graphics are fine
gameplay is good, I liked the spoken comments
content is good, like the events
story progression is middling
replay value, not bad but hard to tell how it’ll pan out
xbox one x with a controller, not had any (new) problems (just the same old stuff that they can’t/won’t sort out)

•Graphics - Good, looks at least as good as the core
•Gameplay - The actual controls are fine, in line with the core game but the events are to random to be run for more than rally events
•Content - Mix, the new events seem ok but they don’t play well across most of the car tiers
•Story progression - Fine but this is a game for casual racers so do we really want much of this?
•Replay value - Very low. With the events being mostly a guessing game of how the car will handle a bump this time frustration sets in quickly. Also the helicopter too annoying to be of any help in this regards. I really don’t know who thought the helicopter was a good idea and how it made it through anyone actually testing.

•Overall rating - meh

Yup very low replay value once you’ve done everything. Ditto about the helicopter, super annoying. I went into replay mode expecting to be able to select helicopter view but no.

I’m hoping they add some cross country races. There’s some superb terrain off road / off track that would be great for cross country.

They could also do a Drift Club story with multiple challenges. This map is superb for drifting.

Graphics - Mostly positive, but that’s no surprise since no Horizon game has ever really looked ugly overall (Xbox 360 port of Horizon 2 aside). Special positive mentions go to the new particle effects on cars. One negative I have is the Group-B-esque spectators being pretty much limited to the Initial Drive. A lot of hype for what amounted to an iota of screentime.

Gameplay - Mixed. As other have said, the courses are fantastic, and are much more fun than races in the main game. And yes, I said races. I actually didn’t think the normal races were all that bad like others have said, and the rally events were especially fun, if not lacking in detail in some places. However, the pacenotes in rally events are atrocious and completely useless. Probably the worst pacenotes I’ve ever heard this side of Sega Rally. The helicopter didn’t really bug me gameplay wise since I was playing music that drowned out the noise of its blades, but I’ll take everyone’s word that the noise was excessive, and the use of a helicopter over a co-driver in the passenger seat is only logical about 95 percent of the time. I personally probably only drove a single seater in a rally event maybe twice.

Content - Negative. As said before, the courses are a big improvment over the base game. However, it’s a pity there are so few of them since there are a lot of reverse versions of existing routes with maybe a shade of nighttime to change things up slightly. This is also probably the worst DLC car roster since Lego Speed Champions. Only 1 car really fits the theme of the expansion, and, at least in my opinion, only about 5 of the other 9 are even worth the garage space.

Story Progression - Negative. I was pretty sad to see the progression system from Hot Wheels Mexico go. In its place is just a slightly modified version of the progression system from the base game, and it becomes very chaotic and hard to manage very quickly. It’s also pretty short since I finished the campaign in about ten hours of gameplay. Probably would’ve been even quicker if I hadn’t stopped to do the PR stunts and other challenges to break up the pacing a bit, but that was I of my own volition.

Replay Value - Mixed. I will certainly be coming back to this more often than I do now with Hot Wheels due to the quality of the courses and the ability to play each course in two different modes. However, map fatigue is inevitable in any game, especially one with a map this size. Also, with no more expansions and free updates focusing on very niche subjects, I just don’t see myself playing Horizon 5 anymore outside of every Thursday for an hour to keep my car collection updated.

Overall Rating - Mixed. Lots of a good steps forward, but as usual, there were a lot more steps back.

I could not be more underwhelmed. Sure, it’s better than the hot wheels expansion but that’s such a low bar it’s not worth considering.

The FH franchise continues to lose the plot. What’s the point of rally callouts when they are functionally useless? The helicopter is just harmful, and once again without custom championships there is no depth or endgame.

In the short span of time between FH3 and now, this franchise has gone from an open world racing masterpiece to a franchise that cares more about presentation, and it’s willing to harm the racing experience in order to put presentation front and center.

There are good ideas, but they are completely negated by the puddle deep gameplay design. This entire franchise has become more about serving the game tourists from games pass than serving an actual fandom that might stick around, and this rally expansion shows that attitude. There is nothing for dedicated drivers to sink their teeth into. The rally experience is completely disingenuous.

It’s made all the more frustrating by PGGs constant “everything must be positive” approach, both in game and in their interactions via streams and other media. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be positive, but we’ve gone into Stepford Wives horror zone here. There is a difference between having healthy interactions and creating unrealistic expectations in terms of interpersonal relationships. And the streams really need to stop pretending that everything is amazing and always will be. It’s patronizing and insulting at this point.

Waste of a good map and some great roads. Really sad actually.

Graphics
Top-notch stuff. Visually, Sierra Nueva needs a monument or two, but I guess the Mexican government limited those to the main map only. Apart from the mesas, I feel it isn’t that distinct from the rest of Mexico.

Gameplay
The pace notes are an interesting idea that doesn’t quite work because they don’t sync. The helicopter doesn’t overly annoy me, but I’d still prefer to be able to ground it. It would’ve been nice to see some circuits alongside the sprints.

The handling is a bit of a pain as if PGG is catering to the drift-to-race brigade. Also, this is probably easier for the controller jockeys to deal with than those of us using keyboards.

The amount of dust kicked up by the drivatars in dirt races is a pain to deal with when you’re behind them in cockpit view, and glare in night races from the helicopter also loses marks (and is another reason to ground it).

Content
I’ve not been through all the cars, but the No. 4 Focus stands out. Apart from tuning the car, I’ve done nothing else with it, and it’s performed admirably. The rest so far seem to be fairly sound performers. I think the Scumbug is great to drive, although as a racer, it struggles.

The races were fine if you exclude the handling from consideration. I like the rally option because it spared me the bother of dealing with the drivatars in initially unfamiliar races.

The boss races are all locked in (I keep meaning to check this; blueprint option?) and don’t always match the kind of racing that you had to do to get there. The Goliath is a bit the same way in that you’re in some rally monster racing against a bunch of off-roaders, which is made worse when Alex in the Polaris RZR zooms away on tarmac as if he’s in the Brabham.

And as for the Goliath vs. the Titan, I currently have a preference for the latter.

The PR stunts weren’t overly difficult to three star, and at least there are no trailblazers. But that danger sign on the north side of the map and breakable trees that trigger a fail… Seriously?!

The piñata trucks were easy to collect. The alien artefacts… I mean, crates weren’t quite the nuisance I feared they’d be.

Don’t care about the new music, but do care that my usual station kept being changed to Radio Epitaph.

Pinned tasks were a bother because much of the time I wanted to do something else instead of being herded into the next event; and you had to do something or you couldn’t exit from the map screen.

Story progression
Relatively fast if you’re just doing the main story, but grindy if you’re also trying to clear out the accolades to get rid of pinned tasks.

Replay value
None. I’ve been thinking about this and can’t really think of some compelling feature that would have me going back to Sierra Nueva.

In Lego Valley, it was (and sometimes is) the Falcon Speedway. On Fortune Island, the drifty boys had the Needle. For me, Hot Wheels has the Goliath (although I admit that I’ve stopped bothering with it).

But Rally Adventure doesn’t really have anything. I suppose the drifty boys might like it because the whole thing is (in my view) one big drift zone.

Like the HW expansion, I’ll be back once a week to do the playlist events, but probably not more frequently than that.

Overall rating
Applying best-fit marking, 6/10, which I think is about right.

Graphics: Good, on a par with the main map and consistent with the usual high quality in FH games. I haven’t experienced any glitches/slow down on the expansion. Solid 8/10.

•Gameplay: excellent tracks and the rally feature was nicely implemented. Still fairly easy even on unbeatable mode but kept me engaged throughout working through the expansion. The helicopter didn’t bother me at all. “Boss” races were a bit disappointing but otherwise fun to work through. 7/10

•Content: It took me around 10 hours to fully complete the expansion, so maybe a bit short. As above, tracks are excellent but there should be more of them (plus points for creating reverse tracks, minus points for the fact it means that there are less unique courses than usual for an expansion). The lack of a proper Goliath or Gauntlet is also disappointing, as is the fact D and C class rivals have been omitted. Cars are also generally not of a type that particularly interests me, although the McRae focus is great. 6/10

•Story progression: very weak. Is it really that difficult to create a basic plot that makes some sense? I’ve genuinely got no idea what the three teams were doing, who they were meant to be competing against, why the final race for each was against the person who ran the team etc. I wasn’t engaged with it at all. 2/10

•Replay value: fairly high. The lack of a ranked mode of course hurts the repeatability of any open events but there is a lot of good rivals content. 8/10

•Overall: a decent expansion. I like the format and it feels like it’s been well put together. Some negatives as above but overall I enjoyed it. 7/10

I got more enjoyment out of the HW expansion. Not that the rally expansion is bad, but it wasn’t different enough from the main content to be really interesting to me and I did everything I wanted to do in it in less than 8 hours. Overall I’d give it a 6/10 - it’d be a 5 but I’m giving it a bonus point for adding anti-lag turbos and (not enough) higher profile tires to the game in general… even if it’s so late that I won’t get much more use out of them unless they make it into a sequel.

Some good feedback & like like the (1-10) rankings :+1:t2:

I think it’s been pretty unanimous that the #4 Ford Focus has been a very popular car as part of the expansion & I definitely agree, but I have to admit that bc I drive exclusively in cockpit mode, the visibility restriction caused by the windshield visor decal has pushed me away from the car, particularly with so many elevation changes on these routes.
I’m wondering if this is possibly a bug bc on every other car with a similar decal, it is opaque when viewing from cockpit mode. I’ve searched the known issues but didn’t find anything on it.

@T10ManteoMax : (or anyone) are you aware of any information on this? Thanks

My opinion of the Rally Expansion (even though I only played the start) is just okay.

Presentation: Wasn’t bad, but also very much disappointing. The Lightning is cool and all but the steep requirements to get it will make it a tough call. The map is beautiful, but shallow in terms of road count. The Eurocopter-based helicopter is just really uncool because no rally event in real life should ever use any form of civilian helicopter. The lack of custom championships further dooms it closer to mediocrity.

Cars: Except for the Colin McRae Focus (which is pretty much popular) and the F-150 Lightning, most of the vehicles are just forgettable and would rather be playlist rewards rather than being locked to an expansion. Even HW expansion had some awesome cars like the Venom F5. This is arguably the blandest expansion vehicle list since the Lego expansion in FH4. No Lancias and no additional rally cars really hurt this expansion’s value.

Progression: I’d have given HW some credit to offering a sensible progression system (since FH5 standalone has none at all). Progression is a mixed bag as well with this expansion.

Dialogue: Really bad in my opinion. Except for Alex (who is the only redeeming quality in the actor dept.), and probably to a lesser extent, Ramiro, the dialogue for pacenotes are trash. Alejandra is once again showing her bad habits once more with her overly excited behavior and it’s just jarring. Sometimes I wish Keira was the pacenotes driver instead of this infantile-sounding… you get the idea.

Overall: It’s rad in some areas like the racing itself, but bad in some other areas (Questionable AI, Awful, cringey dialogue barring Alex, and feeling like the name is the overdone “In-Name Only” trope).

6.5/10 for me.

Graphics: Nah, I wasn’t blown away. They added cool mud and water splash effects. Otherwise it’s Forza. They’d have to deliberately make the graphics worse to fail here.

8/10 because it’s polish and already looked one of the best on console. These effects are possibly being tested for future games and still need work. Sometimes the mud still looks like a shiny film to me when it’s just a light coating of dust.

Gameplay/Progression: They lost sight of their own vision in my opinion. They made routes they themselves said suited lower class vehicles. I think some of the roads are really nice, but not many of them made me go wow or felt worth the wait. I wouldn’t have preordered VIP Premium for this, certainly.

We wanted reverse routes but not at the extent of circuits which is where a lot of retired legendary rally cars ended up. They try to dictate to us how we play and the helicopter also cannot be turned off. 6/10 - replayability is hugely hurt by lack of lower class racing and rivals.

(The dialogue in the boss races was the nicest surprise for me.)

Cars: I am also not impressed they waited till we lost a bunch of desirable rally cars like the 037, Stratos and Sunbeam to do a rally expansion. (I don’t care what happened behind the scenes.)

The Focus is scant consolation to me for this and if that’s what we have to hang on to then for me it’s hard to give a rally DLC but no Lancia or Talbot high marks for its vehicles when we had these cars in FH4. 5/10 - some nice trucks and things but this DLC as a whole feels a bit underprepared and half-cooked in that respect.

I would have loved this in FH4 with lower class vehicles also catered for with the cars available and actual seasons.

It’s a 6 maybe 6.5 for me. Not worth it if you didn’t already pay. Liked it, but could have loved it. Good but not great.

I was finally able to determine how to stop the annoying auto-pinning of the Badlands challenges…
yep, I succumbed to the “engagement for the sake of relief” scenario, but I had planned to complete everything at some point anyway.

If anyone needs recommendations for cars or strategies for completing some of the challenges, let me know; happy to help where I can.

Mostly rad but with some bad elements.

Graphics - 10/10, not worth taking much from that from me, AAA titles haven’t had a problem here in my opinion for 10+ years now.

Gameplay - 8/10, same solid FH physics as always that translate well to the roads in this DLC, little bit of randomness in jumps/slides is why I haven’t give this another 10, it can be pixels difference between a perfect jump or having a rubbish landing, or the car sliding perfectly through a checkpoint/nothing and you just turning like normal, this week’s Rivals event on Orogrande has demonstrated that to me perfectly.

Never bothered with the pace notes as I knew they’d be half baked + I can’t hack any character in these games anymore, speech volume is a wonderful option.

Content - 7/10, superb roads, great routes but soured by passing off reverses as unique courses that make up nearly half the roster, team champion races are out of place with the CC elements only being utilised in those, I like each team having their own unique collectable though.

The Focus is the only car added that fits the theme but that’s worth a point on it’s own, I suppose seeing as it was added in the series leading up to the DLC + you winning one within it the Quattro could be classed as sort of part of the expansion and that’s another great car that fits the theme.

Story Progression - 2/10, it’s basically just tiered accolades with a unique race at the end x3 + the Goliath to finish, poor but for me that applies to the past 5 years of FH.

Replay value - 7/10 personally, 3/10 objectively, not much reason to go back for most players but the routes themselves for me will provide a lot of reason to go back and I can see myself happily doing the DLC’s seasonal championships for the foreseeable whereas I quickly tired of HW’s equivalent, no D + C class rivals loses it 1-2pts here, Classic Rally cars in particular would have been great to use to put some times in but they lose most of their character when you bump them up to the minimum B class that’s allowed, bizarre that D + C have no leaderboards when you can use them, at least HW had a valid excuse in that department.

Overall a good effort though so 7/10 for me, I wouldn’t want the whole map to be like Sierra Nueva but in the future it would be great to see more roads like it in a base game map.

Graphics, and music good, only when fast trough certain trees and hills in new xbox just feel a lag.
gameplay nice. some things may be improved.
Now sadly this is not Rally. is more like a Dakkar, that is a kind of rally.

Tough crowd… But excellent points on the whole.

As for me, I enjoyed myself so much with this expansion that I just raced until it was all done (stock cars mostly). And I mean all of it. I did it on a “Pro” setting so, now I intend to do it all again against Horizon’s best AI, the “Unbeatables”. And after that… mucho rivals!

I’m on an XBox series X & the series 2 controller. I haven’t had any problems at all and am still impressed on how much bang for the buck I get out of this hardware.

Kudos to the Horizon team on a job well done!
