Higher performance tunes = higher gear?

Hi all,

So, I decided to try out a higher performance tune while racing the Mustang Boss around Indy. And, well, it was wheel-spin city.

First thing: I know I’m the problem. There is nothing wrong with the tune. It is a proven tune from a proven tuner.

Second thing: I know I need to do better with things like gradually accelerating from the brake. I do try not to just “punch it” but sometimes I’m probably too much of an eager beaver.

My question is, simply – for the most part, should you be running higher gears with higher performance tunes to eliminate some of the wheel spinning? I generally don’t run TCS (which would probably help, here). I know it is too simplistic to simply say “+1 your normal gear set” but as a general rule, do you increase the gear with power tunes?

Thanks:

There can be many things we need to do to improve our times.

One thing can be to keep momentum going through turns. This obviously assumes the right brake point, turn in point and level of gas etc.

If we keep momentum going then traction loss naturally becomes less of an issue but we may also be in a higher gear anyway.

You could try to find a replay with that tune to see if you can work out what gears the driver is in etc. Go to cockpit view and you may get some additional info to analyse.

I would say the most common issues with traction loss are:

  1. Poor throttle control eg gassing too early or too much. Ease on the gas and yes that is possible with the Xbox One controller in this game.
  2. People slowing down too much for turns.
  3. Wrong gear maybe but I suspect it is more to do with 1 and 2.

Good point on #2, SNE. I’m pretty sure some folks will look at my braking at think “What on earth are you doing, you very strange person?” I think I focus too much on not locking the brakes that I overcompensate by braking too early and slowly.

And I didn’t even think about the cockpit view on the replays. I usually watch them on chase because that’s what I race on. Thanks for that.

It varies.

Sometimes they do well if you just leave it in 3rd gear through the corner and other times you might need to use 2nd and maybe even 1st. Just trial and error really. The car will let you know promptly if you are in too low of a gear. lol.
