I have never played a game where the AI is so bad. I can barely get round the track without an AI driver trying to drive in me or cause me to spin. In Nascar it is impossible, they all drive at you! Then if you brake at a corner ( not oval ) you might as well forget it as you cannot catch up. Couple this with horrendous understeer ( yes I have used tunes which help ) and you have a disaster of a game that is pretty to look at but that is all.
I am waiting on an adapter that lets me use my PS4 steering wheel, so forced to use the controller right now. As a point of interest I have LOADS of driving games, Assetto Corsa, Project Cars and GT Sport and none of them have such bad AI. The handling of the cars in this game is so unrealistic. I just picked up GT Sport last night and it is a joy to play. The cars feel the right weight, they don’t suffer crazy understeer out of the box and the AI ( it now has a proper single player ) are not too intelligent but they do not run you off the road!
I agree about the AI being bad, but the handling in the Forza games for most cars is usually fairly good. It’s definitely not super realistic, but enjoyable if you can accept it for what it is.
I’m not sure if a wheel will make your experience much better in FM7, controller’s are probably the best way to play it.
I know what he refers to all too well. He has the problem that the game does not let you steer in as much as it would be possible unless you hit a certain speed window that the game sets for every corner basically. The game has a maximum amount of speed where it lets you take the corner, but i found out (switching between wheel and pad) that you can take the corner faster when you use a wheel. The steering sensitivity in relation to speed that is applied to the gamepad is really really bad. Only with a wheel you can feel the understeering, feel that the car pushes over the front tyres. When you use a controller you dont get that, the game prevents you to push over the front tyres. It just won’t let you turn in. Thats annoying as hell because this way you never get to find the limits of the car - unless you use a proper wheel. Having GT Sport here also, its a joy to drive in comparison, i feel that i can push the car more and can also feel when i go into a corner too fast.
i’m 4 competitions in, and the AI is just making me hate the game. I’ve put it on hold until Some improvements are made.
It’s beating a dead horse though, T10 must be well aware, yet they haven’t said anything about changing the AI.
Every race will be the following:
-The player Always starts in the middle of the pack
-The first turn is destruction derby with everyone slamming into each other. This makes driving with Simulation Damage absolutely impossible.
-Drivatars do Not acknowledge your existence. Also, they brake in apexes all the time for absolutely no reason.
-If you get caught up in a turn or rammed of, or even brake to avoid any of the former, the lead guy(s) will drive away with a gap that you can never close-
-Coincidentally, the first cars in the grid will always be the first on the leaderbords, this Never changes, because they have the privilege of taking a turn without the risk of being slammed into to.
-On the last lap(s), the AI will slow. If you pass a car, they give up and you’ll build a gap, even though that car took you 5 laps to catch up with.
-The AI has no performance restrictions. If the rating limit is 900 cars, the AI will drive 870-rated cars with the performance of P999 one. Even identical cars on the grid will perform wildly different, with unreasonable straight speeds, or absurd acceleration.
I bought an Xbox S last year on the hope that the X would bring back the pc level visuals I had lost after a 780 Ti. It seems mostly that’ the case.
But I also bought the Xbox cause Forza. After playing the game for while, I’ve also found it lacking. The AI and multiplayer have been extreme disappointments.
So I’m going to pick up a ps4 Pro to get some actual matchmaking and ranking based racing ala gt sport. I’ll hang onto the Xbox S for a 4K bluray and cause I’ve got a lot of games for it…and the contorkller’s superior IMO.
I used to be a Gran Turismo fan but got fed up waiting for the successor to Gran Turismo 6. Started playing Forza and have enjoyed playing all of the versions.
I’ve now got a PS4 Pro and GT Sport and the AI is refreshingly good. No-one deliberately crashes into you and you don’t stick like glue to other cars.
GT Sport also has a very flashy introduction video and tabbed pages for different tunes on all the cars but for me everything else is inferior to FM7. 170 or so cars only, fragmented career mode, poor on-line facilities and I personally don’t like the controller or car handling. There’s no rewards system and I don’t think I’ll be playing it much in the future.
The AI in this and every game isn’t perfect but we all play the same game here and not everyone has such a problem with them.
If you’re finding the AI to be too difficult it’s probably for a couple of reasons.
Don’t expect the AI in this game to give you an easy race. They won’t just jump out of the way for you, they’ll try to take their line and they’re designed to make you work a little to take a win. Yes, they can also be a little unpredictable so you have to stay sharp. In short, they’ll try to give you a race.
Try thinking of them as slightly erratic bad loosers and drive accordingly. It is possible to have some fantastic racing with them.
If this doesn’t help then you need to reduce the difficulty.
The handling in the game is fine. The hard truth is that some people aren’t quite as good as they think they are. Just stick with it, the more you play the better it gets.
You’re right in saying that no AI is perfect, but FM7’s is the worst I’ve seen, it definitely seemed better in the 360 FM titles. A lot of people on the forums don’t seem to like the Drivatars or when they start to cheat on higher difficulties. Maybe they’re not too bad if you only play Forza or don’t expect improvements in a core part of the game.
The AI and technical issues on PC were the main reasons I didn’t buy the game and if the AI got a big improvement I would seriously consider getting it. The Forza games have some of the biggest budgets for racing games and there are some very talented people in Turn 10, so I’m sure if they put their minds to it the AI could be much better.
The older GT games had some extremely boring AI, but GT Sport’s are a massive improvement. When I played the demo the AI were fairly aware of their surroundings, raced each other and lapped cars would make way for the player and other AI. It actually felt like a proper race was going on.
In FM4 we’d set the AI to max difficult and in a car class higher and they still didn’t provide a challenge. I’m not as quick as I used to be and don’t play as much but the AI on the current gen is far more competitive and, it has to be said, realistic.
You don’t own the game and yet you’re able to say that the FM7 is the worst you’ve seen. Honestly, you need to spend time driving against them to be able to judge. They aren’t perfect but if we could filter out every complaint made by people that were trying compete against too high a difficulty setting for their own ability, every complaint made by players that simply want to crash their way to the front without using any race craft or tactic, every complaint made by people already struggling with car setup and assists and every complaint made by people that just like to complain you’d see a different picture.
Perfect, no. Better or worse than 360 gen, far better.
I have to say I strongly agree with this. I used to dislike the AI very much because I treated them like AI. If you are going for ridiculous dives, driving aggressively etc. they will not give up their position, as no racing driver would. Sure there are some issues still such as first corner pile ups and braking on apexes but I have had many great side by side multiple lap battles with the AI once I started respecting them and it has been great fun.
In fact, it was even more harshly criticized for it because it was sold as the sim to end all sims and was available on PC, where the community seems even more demanding.
Turns out most people who were criticizing the AI were very aggressive drivers themselves.
After spending some amount of time with GT Sport I have to agree the AI in FM7 is pretty bad.
As you get up into the faster cars the first corner is always a destruction derby, they don’t seem to be aware of their surroundings and will force their way onto their line.
In GT Sport the AI appears to attempt to obey right of way rules and will actively avoid collisions even if it means ruining their line.
And this is why in some respects the Forza AI is far better. Too many people think that AI is there just to make up the numbers and they should jump out of the way to let you through. This is how it works in many games. In FM they have some attitude and won’t just let you elbow you’re way through.
As far as I can tell the cleaner you drive the better behaved the AI is.
Highlighted text. I agree with this statement 1000 %. I could not begin to stress this point enough if I wanted to. It seems to get lost on everyone. The way in which you drive in single player is exactly what you are going to receive back from the DRIVATARS. The drivatars are not mimicking their said gamertag names. They are in fact mimicking your own driving habits. Drive overly aggressive with lots of contact and that is what you are going to get back from them. Drive with good racecraft and etiquette and the drivatars will do the same.
I get it and I understand peoples frustration, but over time if you practice good racecraft your drivatars/AI behavior will improve over time. I do this by only counting a race if I have made zero contact with the AI. I don’t use rewind and I don’t abuse track limits. I don’t care if I am 25 laps into a race, if I make contact with the AI, I will restart the race. This takes a lot of patience, but it pays off over time giving me consistently well behaved AI that also put up a good fight for positons. I race on unbeatable difficulty. But this strategy will work on any level difficulty for the most part. It may sound silly to some restarting a race after being 10-15 or even 20 laps in just for one contact with the AI. But if you know that is the consequence you have laid before yourself, you will think twice about making a risky pass or race maneuver.
You really must take into account when the right time to pass is and when the percentage will be the highest for success. Sometimes I will trail last 3-4-5 drivatars for quite awhile before making my move. I have recently upped the ante by restarting even if an AI hits me from behind after making a pass. If you a pass a car on the track, you should only do it when you have the superior upper hand and can get to the next corner brake and exit cleanly.
Contact is everything with your DRIVATARS. Pay close attention to the amount of collisions you have in your DRIVATAR STATS. You should have 0 major collisions and at least a 5 to 1 ratio for the base collisions before you will see an improvement. The higher the ratio of races to collisions , the more improvement you will notice. I currently have roughly 250 races with only 4 collisions.
The other stats in there seem meaningless on the surface. Like the average tire temp. etc. , but I believe they take into account just how aggressively you drive. IE how late you brake into corners, how quick you get back onto the throttle and so on. Also these play a role in what DRIVATAR behavior you are experiencing.
Basically to sum it up, how you drive is what you can expect from the AI. It takes time to get good results , but the pay off is huge in single player.
This has been a big Forza problem for a while. All you have to do is park diagonally on a narrow turn and watch AI pile up behind you and they’ll never go around if your are basically blocking the line.
The funniest I’ve seen in in this version was at the final left turn at Spa on a 15 lap wet race - 2 AI were trying to find a way through the tire barriers, that stop you from cutting the corner, for about 3 laps before they worked out they had to let the other one move.
If you have Limit Agression set to On try turning it to OFF. Serious. They seem to behave better.
Turn the difficulty down a notch and run longer races. This gives you more time to catch the lead guys so you dont have to smash and crash your way through the pack.
Relax*. Usually the harder you try the worse it gets. Overbraking, divebombing, all that stuff usually slows you down even more - which winds up making you do even more of it since you are now even further behind.
*Remember that you dont HAVE to win any particular race or series to advance, so dont worry if you come in second or 8th. You can even re-run a race if you dont like where you places and make more credits while you’re at it.
They are marginally better with aggression turned off. Unfortunately they still have zero spatial awareness and they still try to pit you when you pass them even if you overtake on the straights. I Agree with others the demo derby at the first corner is very annoying and is especially bad a Miami. It’s sad that it’s just as bad as when they launched the Miami track back in FM6. I think it would have been much better if T10 focused on this rather than giving us pointless driver suits (my opinion).
With my collisions with the AI I think that almost half of them are my fault! I imagine they aren’t overly impressed with mine or any human players driving either! I’ve had some great racing with them, door to door through multiple left and rights. In forza6 they just used to dive off the track if they were outside of you in a corner. Give them a bit of space.
The first corner isn’t really destruction derby either, mostly is light taps, certainly not impossible with sim damage. If it goes tits up in the first corner I just restart and don’t let it bother me. The AI are intelligent but not mind readers!
If you’ve just picked up GT Sport last night, you should be appreciating Forza 7 even more! The cars in the GT series have become way to easy to drive over the years…does look pretty though.
Totally fed up with Rubbish AI and Handling? Disaster of a game? Thoroughly disappointed? … Hmmm yet you still continue to play the game… 4 acheivements gained after posting this rant …okay
We all have loads of racing games, as we are all racing fans…i for one cannot drive any car on Assetto Corsa with a gamepad and am not much better with a wheel. It’s not the terrible handling that’s at fault, it’s because i suck. GT Sport is the only racing game this generation that i can throw a car around a track with relative ease. This may be due to having to drive on the same dozen tracks over and over…you soon learn them.
