I usualy got no problem tuning a car race how I need it, but I got a lot of problem fine tuning the gear and so far I did not find any decent tutorial. I post a pic for example: the gear of the Saleen I tuned for the Velocity lobby. If any expert tuning can give me some advice I’ll appreciate it; tnx in advance.
Start by tuning you launch gear:
-
find a track with a level surface (being on an incline or decline will alter weight and grip levels over the driven wheels)
-
do a full throttle clutch dump (or just hold gas and brake from standstill for same results) and see how it hooks up
3a) if it bogs down, shorten 1st gear (shift to the right)
3b) if it lights the wheels up and you’re pinging off the limiter, well before reaching the stated speed for 1st gear, lengthen the gear (shift to the left)
An optimized launch gear would cause slip to the upper end of the usable tach, prior to redline. To paint an example, say your Saleen is still spinning its wheels all the way up to its current 81kph rating, you’d want to lengthen 1st gear (shift to left) until it basically hooked up with a small amount of room before redline left
Next, tune final gear:
-
find longest straight on given track
-
approach it as best you can, carry as much speed as you can
-
verify top speed prior to braking zone
-
verify peak power using telemetry
-
if peak power is at redline—for a generic example—and top speed is roughly 280kph, shorten you last gear from 301 to 280kph
Then adjust all gears to be evenly spaced, much like how they look in the given example
Nuances and side notes:
If making track specific gearing, you can run your generically-optimized gear ratios using the above steps, do some hot laps, and make some observations
-
are you forced to shift at an inconvenient time on a certain corner? Try lengthening or shortening the gear you’re using to mitigate unwanted shifting, which can help with corner exit. Say there’s a chicane or complex that forces you in an awkward spacing between two gears—one gear sticks you too high, and hampers your speed and/or takes you out of ideal power delivery—or the other has you too low, “bogged down” and just shy of the usable power range. Consider lengthening the lower gear, or shortening the higher gear
-
be aware of power delivery. Some cars make plenty of usable power past redline, some fall off a cliff well before. When tuning your final gear, it’s not always about matching top speed to redline
Or apparently just watch that video because that’s basically verbatim what I wrote but way easier to digest
Wasn’t trying to steal your thunder. I think we replied almost at the exact same moment.
It’s also commonly said that having the Final Drive at max acceleration (6.10) in this game results in a less jarring effect when bouncing off the rev-limit, so that’s what I usually do.
Oh no, wasn’t implying that at all. Just laughed at how similar it was
And yes, OP, having a 6.10 final drive minimizes some inherent quirks with the way this game handle’s bogging at redline. It’s always worth setting FD to 6.10 first, then adjusting per gear speeds using the mph/kph readouts
Hmm interesting, so far people said 6.10 did is meta, but no one cares to explain why… Good to know
Tnx. I did not know 6.10 is meta for gear tuning. After watching the video I’ll try to fine tune starting from 6.10 and check if performance on the track improve.
1st gear seems way to short for RWD car. But I don’t think there area any AWD cars with that much grip
McLaren P1 for the Velocity tour lobby. Car handle very well both with the 40-40 meta or the FH5 meta but if I put a longer 1st gear I end up with 7th out the the graph
Try:
1st 90km/h
2nd 125km/h
3rd 160km/h
4th 195km/h
5th 230km/h
6th 265km/h
7th 300km/h
Tho this might not work with tc
Personally I’m not fan of meta 6.10 FD
I usualy use TC only for P car and some R car: my Moza CRP2 pedal and FM are not very good friend so far.
My velocity gear tuning. Adjust final drive for the tracks, so on telemetry max hp before the braking point. I like my gears to be up in the powerband so high rpms. Give it a try?
No assist
Wheel g923
Manual clutch
Most RWD cars with a priority over handling and acceleration (a focus on weight reduction and grip) tend to have ideal 1st gear speeds in the following ranges
B-Class: 35-45mph (56-72kph)
A-Class: 45-60mph (72-97kph)
S-Class: 55-75mph (86-121kph)
That’s an extremely vague range but if I was going into the start of a tuning session I tend to be in those areas before tweaking.
Did you follow the video’s instructions?
Tweak the individual gear speeds, don’t worry about the FD.
Without even knowing your specs I’m guessing 1st gear is too short.
Is 6th gear optimized for whatever longest straight you take the car on?
Your gear spread is fine.
I like setting up 1st gear on kyalami (usually it chokes on start the most)
Set custom race as:
Test
Kyalami
Noon
50% rubber
Clear weather
And set to any car class so that u can change to anything
Then set to soft compound, fuel level to more or less how much u will need for short race (If u tune for open) or more if needed
Start race
Full throttle on lunch, and analyze
If car chokes, shorten 1st gear
If car hits redline while wheels are spinning, make 1st gear longer
Rewind to start
And resume with full throttle
Repeat untill u find perfect 1st gear length
With TC it might be bit different but overall just repeat untill u are satisfied with how fast car lunches
Was working quite fine on the McLaren P1 and GT50. I can’t try manual clutch since I did not yet buy the optional shift gear for my Moza R9 (wife was already quite pis*ed when I got the new setup)
I just like the control over manual clutch been driving a clutch since I got my license many ages ago. It’ll work fine w manual or auto.
Need help w anything else don’t be afraid to reach out.
In motorsport if u install race transmission game will auto clutch for u even if u set it to manual + clutch (that’s a meta btw) and shift times will be faster than with normal manual
U only need clutch to change to reverse gear
I did not know that xD. Using the sequential shift I was sure that for manual clutch I was in need of the optional shift gear for my setup.
