Free Play - Always a Dirty Lap

Can anyone help? Every time I start a race in Free Play the lap time starts dirty and remains dirty lap after lap. I’ve tried different tracks, different modes, different cars, rented cars… and I don’t have any mods on. It worked once, but now never.

Turn off Friction assist?

Friction assist automatically dirties laps (seriously, turn it off. You don’t need it.)

Dirtying a lap in the final sector will also dirty the next lap. Going off track, drafting, and touching walls can all dirty a lap. Drafting applies to cars behind you as well.

I have never had friction assist on but in free play, it can throw a dirty lap when it feels like it even if you know you have not left the track. If I do 20 laps of Watkins Glen for some reason most of the first 10 laps can easily trigger dirty and without changing the driving habit or line the last half is clean. I also get the Perfect Turn or Good Turn then it pops up dirty so it does not always make sense since technically it should not be both. The AI cars are more likely to cause the issue though and had enough of those on a killer lap and going for glory.

why does drafting dirty a lap? That makes no sense. In Indycar racing drafting is an integral part of racing and passing…

Dirty laps are caused By
1 Friction Assist being on
2 Drafting
3 Being Drafted
4 Passing close to a car
5 Once over 180mph may be lower Any car you can see in front of you will dirty your lap any car you can see behind you may dirty the lap.
6 having a car pass you
7 I have done 50 laps on ovals track with traffic all but the first 3 laps will be dirty due to traffic spreading out.
8 Any Drivertar on the track any wher near you may trigger a dirty lap.
9 Leaving the track cutting ect ect
10 Contact with any other car.

How to Fix in your Free Play setting turn contact to Off this will give you full field of drivtars but kiss all drafting effects so way less dirty laqps.

Indeed it’s a part of racing but people in earlier games used to push lower class cars around tracks in much higher class car making times cheated but still clean.

Drafting results in higher speeds on straights which can result in faster lap times. For the sake of fair leaderboards you can’t use drafting as an advantage.

Because pure lap-times are meant to be compared outside of external factors on leaderboards. If drafting didn’t dirty a lap then any lap done in solo time-trial mode would automatically be at a disadvantage because they could never get a draft boost.

Saying drafting is an integral part of racing and passing is irrevelant because lap times don’t determine who wins a race, whomever is in the lead when they cross the finish line (as long as they got there legally) wins regardless of how “dirty” the laps were. It’d be the same as trying to argue as to why rubbing the wall or another car dirties a lap when that is part-and-parcel of touring-car races.

Thanks guys!

Yes, it was Friction Assist. I don’t even remember turning that thing on. I wouldn’t want it anyway…

ok that makes sense then in game…not that drafting really works well in FM7 like a lot of other features…thanks for the input…
