Since as long as i can remember, Microsoft and Turn 10 have trumpeted the sales figures for Forza. Each iteration of the game.
They go all out and say Forza whatever version it is has reached a million sales, and normally goes on to sell 3-4 million copies.
This time they’ve been very quiet as far as i know and from the only data i could find (NPD sales data) it’s not even managed a million sales, let alone 3-4.
Does anyone know what figures are available and why they’ve been quiet?
I think the whole loot crate and VIP debacle, not to mention ongoing bugs has caught them with their pants down and they’re running in defensive mode.
Anyone have any ideas?
At this current point in Forza Motorsport 7’s lifespan, it has more players than Forza Motorsport 6 over the same post-launch period.
That being said, Forza Motorsport 6 was released 3 weeks earlier in the year by comparison, and Kudosprime’s data hasn’t reach that game’s “Christmas bump” yet.
In any case, Forza Motorsport 7 is doing fine. It’s not selling gang-busters like Forza Horizon 3 was, but it’s holding its own.
Anything else is pure speculation that’s not going to lead anywhere other than this thread getting locked eventually.
Unfortunately these threads are just fuel to people who don’t like the new features of the newest title… So it’s difficult to have a nice debate about it.
From what I know, homologation is making casual players shy away from the game, but I have no idea whether it would have as big an impact as people say. And, in any case, these players can always pick up Horizon either right now or later this year when the new one inevitably comes out. The Motorsport branch should not be just “Forza on race tracks” as opposed to Horizon which is “Forza on the streets”. So the changes they did were for the better and help justify the existence of two different games to the ones calling the shots at Microsoft.
IMO Forza 7’s biggest problem, if it has one, is that, as the car list has grown, the quality control seems to have gone down a bit, as there are many common cars with simple bugs. In the Horizon series this is happening as well. But I would not put the blame on the team itself… They only work with what they’re given, really.
The lootbox bit was no help either. It was quite unfortunate to see prominent media outlets spreading misinformation about prize crates, mod cards, tokens, etc. and not being called out upon for it. This sort of unreliable information I’ve seen in such outlets has made me question their integrity when it comes to reviewing games from the Xbox ecosystem and, like it or not, they remain a powerful influence in the industry, at least to the people who invest more into gaming than just following the latest trends.
The latest thing I can think of is likely that the Xbox One X’s launch a few weeks after the game may have hurt its sales potential, especially given how features were handled, but, as you say, it’s just not worth discussing provided we have only limited information available to us.
I like this game a lot and hope it gets polished more over time as the core of it is excellent.
the only article I have seen was a week after forza 7 launched showing that after 7 days forrza 7 was the worst selling forza on the xbox (360 or one) in its first week @ 176,000 units.
by comparison forza 4 was the best selling at just over 500,000. forza 7 may not have even sold 500,000 units yet, let alone a million
edit: found the article.
VG Chartz only tracks retail sales, digital sales which are usually another 20 to 30% arent included in their numbers.
If there is a downturn it could any number of things, racing and sports games arent selling that well overall and the Xbox itself is loosing ground to the PS4 and Switch.
P.S. Considering how good FH3 is doing, it could be Horizon cannibalizing some of Motorsports sales.
As I understand it you can only get third party sales figures for discs. Unless MS publish digital sales figures there is simply no way of knowing.
I know they sold at least 1 copy. I think NeoDragonaut covers it all from there.
