Forza Motorsport 7: Livery Editor

With Turn 10 NOTHING is simple.

^^^Would really like to be a fly on the wall in T10’s boardroom when it comes to discussing the livery editor. Actually maybe not; would probably be pretty boring since they wouldn’t be talking about anything.

We are waiting for the day when we can use matte, gloss, chrome freely for vinyl.
The evolution of vinyl graphics in recent years in the real world is remarkable, and designs using complex materials are not uncommon.
However, we still can only choose a single material provided in the body paints.
In FM7, some interviews show that “new material” can be used, but I hope this is a vinyl materials selection.

Nothing is going to change in the editor as it isn’t broken.
There are more critical things that should be addressed imo to support painters like getting the cars glitch free.

I still use an iPhone 4S because it “isn’t broken” and new ones are so expensive it hurts to think about replacing it. But that doesn’t mean I am perfectly happy with the features and hardware on my 4S. Things don’t need to be “broken” to be improved upon. Forza 7 is going to cost $60-120 depending on your DLC choices and so far it’s a lot of cut and paste from past forza games (mostly forza 6). I have not seen enough proof yet that this is truly worthy of $60. It still feels like Forza 6+, not forza 7. Not to mention they ideally want me to buy the Xbox X as well but I won’t get into that now. It’s high time for the super recycled core mechanics of the forza series to receive some much needed attention and refreshment.

DING DING DING We have our winners. If it ain’t broke or game breaking it ain’t getting addressed. That’s T10 101. Because the last several iterations have been essentially copy and past with graphical enhancements. You have the same glitches showing up. That should be the focus. Fix the core problem and the auxiliary issues can be addressed. Cause if you enhance the paint editor but the same glitches happen when painting a specific car, all those new options are kinda moot. Say you paint a window of a popular car but because the model is glitched it cuts whatever logo or vinyl you put on there in half. And then it pops up on more cars. Now T10 has a choice to make, go through all the cars (700 in FM7) and see if and where said glitch is OR put it on the back burner with a couple folks looking into it and continue with the majority of the staff working on current and future projects such as money making DLC. Which is going to be made a priority? From experience I can tell you DLC because a lot of paint glitches in FM5 appear in FM6.

Oh, and the GT editor has some nice options.

Seeing lots of great on-the-money posts 'round here. Keep 'em coming. Time to call T10’s bluff.

Well, I saw something on the last image I’m personally tickled to death about… we got ZOOM!

It’s always been a huge pain during layouts on the car themselves as you can’t fricken see what you’re doing… looks lined up, BUT a quick trip to Forazvista shows you’re perfect (numbers matching and all) alignment a pixel or three off. Looks like they took the navigation between work areas elsewhere (L2 & R2 are now zoom buttons). Sorry if this is old news… i should visit more often.

If anything I hope they add more shapes and vinyls as well as manufacturer logos. One of things that makes painting hard for me at least is that you have to do crazy manipulations and over layering with the limited number of shapes included.

They already have too many shapes in my opinion. I probably don’t use more than 15-20 (usually 5-10) basic shapes for any given design (except when an in-game font is close enough to use, which increases the amount of shapes used quite a bit).

Learning to pick and manipulate the shapes to get the result you want is part of what makes the vinyl editor in Forza so amazing, and a reason for them not to change it (other than some tweaking, like being able to change the background to more options by clicking the right joystick like it was done in FH2 (at least I think it was in FH2 where it was possible to switch between dark and bright backgrounds on top of the grid/no grid options we’ve always had)).

IIRC that functionality was introduced in FH3; hopefully it will make the jump to FM7, because I’ve worn the right joystick from all the clicking (okay, not really, but you get the idea).

I think there’s not much room for improvement with the basic mechanics of the livery editor - unless you count “bumping up the resolution of the livery alpha” and “texture mapping that makes sense on all cars” as livery editor improvements. I agree with PJ and Wildcat, a system that would allow us to organize our own catalog of decals & liveries would be a very neat addition (and wouldn’t probably take a rocket scientist or hundreds of man-hours to implement, either).

As for suit customization: I’ll wait to see what PDI has in store. So far I haven’t heard anything to convince me it won’t just be a color palette switcher.

I agree with Thunder. I have a very short list of shapes that I actually use most of the time as well … and only about two of the font sets that I really even consider using at all. I’ve done hundreds of paints over the years and there are probably about 8 of the font sets that I’ve never used a single time. Wasted space.

Would be cool if we could somehow mark certain vinyl shapes as ‘favorites’ and then group all of our favorite shapes on the first page of the editor.

I agree… the ability to organise the vinyls (manufacturer, shapes & created designs) is something this game seriously needs…

It would be better and more organized if there was one alphabet and numeric set which you could select from and then choose an active font for. No more scrolling through pages of characters.

That would be a cool idea…

It would be nice if you could at least use search on your own designs.

And i bet those decals in the editor are going to be high resolution on GT Sport, not the blurry mess we are stuck with on the FM Series…

Some very nice suggestions for the paint booth. For me as long as the cars come glitch free so the intended areas can be painted and decal resolution allows for decent presentation thereof, I’ll be happy.

The ability to paint on windows/windscreen would be a welcome addition for true replicas though.

I am glad that we can still import back to FM5 though. That’s good news.

I wonder if that compatibility prevents an overhaul of the livery editor?

  • I agree mostly about the comment on the low res graphics. At some point that stuff needs to go away, imo. It’s only going to look worse as the game looks incrementally better.

Right now it looks lI’me we have 480p vinyls on a 1080p car in FM6. It’s even worse in Horizon 3 as it looks like 360 or even 240p decals. One would hope Forza 7 being 4K on the One X that the vinyl would be bumped up to at least 1080p.
