Honestly, it’s kind of just a hate train video based on my watching of it.
He does get some points right, but I feel like that was more out of luck than ability to break down and critique. I mean, a broken clock is right twice a day.
Quackula’s contribution to the video, talking about the competitive scene and the issues it faces (especially the convoy system) is a really good section and worth a watch. The rest is less a critique and more an emotional tantrum. A lot of it may be justified, but it’s not really breaking anything down or getting to the root very well, and some of the conclusions are, in my opinion, plain wrong, and would lead the franchise even deeper into the pit of loosing the plot that they’ve been falling down for two iterations now.
I don’t know about the creator of the video and the controversy surrounding him but I also don’t really care. People can change their minds. What he and Quack said in the video nails it in my opinion. The creator was only wrong when he said that you can’t drive/fall off the HW tracks which is actually possible in some areas but maybe he ment in comparison to the old HW from FH3 I think it was. I also don’t agree with what he said about HW being the better expension than RA but that boils down to personal preference(s). There were some things in the user feedback that I don’t agree with but in general this video gets an A+ from me.
What was said about the Eliminator and that the map design is presumably suffering from it because it was built to incooperate that steaming pile of manure into the game is spot on. This trash is only in the game because PGG wanted to take a bite of the Fortnite cake and hype surrounding this mode.
The majority of the players here are playing car games since ages. Tell me did you ever came up with the idea that you’re missing something like that in such a game before or even craved for something like this before “Battle Royal” was even a thing? I’d guess not.
When it comes to the mode itself. It’s boring and simply dumb. You only have about a dozen untuned cars of which half of them aren’t even suited for it. It also hasn’t much to do with driving skills but boils down to map knowledge, where and when what spawns and a good portion of luck.
How anybody that also does actual competitive racing like Gilles for example can defend this mode is beyond my understanding. I already find some PR Stunts like Danger Signs or Trailblazer or the Minigames cringe worthy. Things like this have nothing to do in a game that’s based on realistic scenarios and around really existing cars. That’s why I also have major problems with things like HW as some of the cars may actually exist and are maybe even drivable but they presumably won’t last a single lap on a track. Except for the new Trans Am that only is a HW because it gets sponsored by it. It was even worse with the Lego tie-in in FH4. I have the DLC but never set foot on the map and could have vomitted bricks when ever one of the cars showed up in a “normal” race.
When it comes to an Eliminator mode. Look what Stevio does with his elimination tournaments where the last car of a race gets kicked out until there is only one left. That’s how an eliminator mode should be/work.
…not everyone is Gilles, not everyone is Me or you, and between the 3 of us we all have varying degrees of experience, skills and abilities. We all also seek different things from our play time. I can’t fault people for doing things that they find fun. Because Gilles enjoys “real racing” doesn’t mean he can’t also enjoy the chaos of eliminator, the skill of hiding, driving to play keep away, and exercising knowledge of all facets of the map.
At any rate, they give us so many points these days, I can basically skip it and Playground which are my least favorite modes to play. That is just personal to me, I don’t really find anything wrong with the modes, they just aren’t for me. If others enjoy it, then cool!
IMO blame “decision maker”, not the mode. Eliminator itself is ok. You don’t like it? that is ok too.
If “decision maker” decision was to make map so flat for Elimiator, than that was bad decision and they are responsible for that. Not the mode.
Here is my hot take: Map (or maybe I should say road layout?) is made in that way, so people in S2/X class cars have somehwere to drive. Maybe we should blame them for that kind of map?
It’s of course personal opinion as I thought I’ve made clear. It also wasn’t ment to single out or accuse Gilles for anything.
@ziperrPL I do blame the decision makers (see the piece of the cake and hype comment) but I also blame the mode or better how it was implemented. It’s just dumb IMO.
I can race S2 and X class cars on basically all asphalt tracks and I bet you also can. If it’s just about going as fast as possible in a straight line there’s the highway.
Didn’t mean it that way … sorry if it came off like that. Mostly saying that I get why people enjoy it even though I don’t - and I don’t fault the game mode itself or the Dev’s as to why I don’t like it, and or as to why it does not appeal to me. Others do, we share the same game… this is a win/win for all of us in one way or another.
Also: Is there no skill in knowing your way around the non-roaded parts of this map?
For example, do you know the optimal places to drive up or down the volcano without getting stuck on the rocks? Do you know all the nooks and crannies along the ways where you can hide from opponents in eliminator? … I don’t even play this game mode except for a few times ever, and what I don’t get is how anyone competitive about what they do even on a personal level can’t find some sort of challenge at which to get better in that mode or at least, …try to apply strategic thinking to it.
I’m the same way. I love racing, but I also really enjoy Eliminator. I tried it in FH4 in 2021 and instantly fell in love with the mode, and I still play it to this day. There’s no reason why somebody can’t enjoy both. Not sure what @PlageBLN is on about here.
I’m presumably too much of a car enthusiast and “realism” fan. This mode like some other stuff in the game simply doesn’t computes with me as I’ve pointed out above already.
That’s fair enough, it’s not for everyone. You don’t have to enjoy it yourself. I just find it very odd that people enjoying both competitive racing and Eliminator is “beyond your understanding”.
I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating: I’m fine with ancillary game modes like Eliminator. What I’m not ok with is when they get added to the game while core racing features like custom championships and adding new races to the map get ignored.
FH5 barely functions as a racing game, and when stuff like the Eliminator gets prioritized, it raises a great deal of ire in me.
Regardless of if the decision was made to service the Eliminator or not, it’s undeniable that the middle of the map is way too much open space while the actual interesting parts of the map are squeezed into the corners. The farmland has some decent roads, but beyond that there is very little positive to take away from the situation.
There also is a worrying change from 4 to 5 in terms of track design. 4 tended to favour grip builds for it’s tracks, with a lot more technicality in the design of the races themselves. 5 tends to favour power builds, with a lot of smooth corners, aggressive cuts, and walls everywhere to act as a safety net for poor driving. The rally adventure track design helped alleviate some worries, but it’s still worth mentioning.
I’m a big advocate for either removing walls or removing every other section of wall. It would still provide a bit of a safety net and would be safe to tap, but corner bombing would be a massive gamble and wall riding would be impossible. It’d be a quick and easy way to encourage better driving without losing much accessibility.
See, I really started playing computer games on an Amiga back in the days and while I tremendously enjoyed a game called Stunt Car Racer I never thought or felt the need that something like this has to be incooperated into Test Drive. It’s two different type of games in the car game genre and that’s how it should be.
Compare this to basketball vs. football (soccer). They’re both ball games but with a totally different backgound and rules. Nobody would come up with the idea to kick a ball into a basket up in the air or allowing to pass the ball with the feet in one or the other.
PGG seems to try exactly that. They seem to want to include every single ball game under the sun in one game. Including marbles.
You’re absolutely right IMO but it’s not only that. These game modes also attract players that no one (except PGG) actually wants in the game. I bet a good part of the “nuisances” in the Trial and so on are players that are in the game because they got attracted by the crappy game modes I’ve mentioned.
PG are on the record about the map being made to accomodate Eliminator and Horizon Arcade. You can find it if you watch through the streams where they prestented the game 2 years ago. Ive repeated that point myself multiple times based on this.
I get it some won’t like it,others will. Me personally ive enjoyed my time in eliminator. I didnt play it in Horizon 4. The learning curve is pretty cool but then after a while it just starts to get boring and samey.
I can’t help but acknowledge they didnt bother to update this gamemode so far and that its mostly just ported from H4 just with a different car roster. Especially since there was a leaked eliminator update back about a year ago. Something must’ve happened and so they decided to put their focus on eventlab instead. Weirdest thing about is that it was actually a really substantial content update.
On top of that many players still refuse to play this gamemode even tho the devs made the map easier to navigate through and generally more “accessible” like just about everything else in Horizon 5. I think these more “casual players” wouldn’t want to play in the first place. Like the moment it becomes slightly frustrating, they’d just give up. I remember there was lots of complaints about the festival playlist challenge requiring to finish 30th or better. So now this is completely gone.
Similar deal with online racing. Like the moment these players encounter a rammer or even if they get just a slight bump from another player they’ll be raising hell and " NEVER PLAYING ONLINE RACING AGAIN". So what do we need to do to fix this issue? Collusions off they say. Like its not even racing anymore its just fighitng ghosts.
Which makes me think these players usually have a lower boiling point. And the game in general has tried so hard to cater towards them. Including with the eliminator. And they STILL refuse to play it. So why is the game being made easier and easier for them? It makes no sense to me. Hopefully the devs realize this someday.
Wallriding is not a thing. Its not a substantial issue in this game at all. Like for example if you attempt this in online racing - you’re toast. You gonna get a slow down, loose positions and it doesn’t benefit you whatsoever.
In single player racing … maybe a little bit. If you have one of these longer walls/barriers and you go at speed with the intend of murdering your AI opponent sure. But 98 % of the time it is slower to wallride than take proper racing lines.
Even in Hotwheels… There are maybe few corners here and there you can wallride through and abuse the AI’s breaking points. But generally if you drive like this it is punishing. And you will be slower. No way you catch up to that 1 AI driver on the front if you keep doing that. Online racing there is punishing too. Just like on the mainlad. If you wallride you just don’t know when the collusions system is gonna activate and slow you down. It is stil faster to take proper racing lines.
I hear the wallriding argument a lot but im yet to see anyone that’s used it effectively to win races. Other than that i agree with everything else you wrote.
Horizon 4 from seeing footage in online racing and even H3 had a wallriding issue but thats because back then the collusion system seemed to not acknowledge bad driving at all. Motorsport 7 is the same story from what i can see.
Theres nothing competitive about the trial in the first place. 12 cars cramped up on one corner, collusions off. Theres just nowhere else you could go. And its not as if it makes you faster so its not viable.
