Hi, I have this problem for almost half and a quarter of year, I looked up on the internet for fixes, nothing, BUT NOTHING worked
Now I am here whit a group of people that are in the same situation.
I have the activation problem and I got FH4 Ultimate edition. I tried all the things that you guys recommended, but it didn’t fix anything. I hope that all of us will see a shining star and make FH4 work again.
I’ll keep an eye on this forum and keep you updated if I find a fix.

I had this issue (Game would launch and crash on the McLaren Senna window) since earlier this month (September 2020), I believe I have a workaround, it is a pain in the backside.
I can replicate the crash (hangtype:activation). It is something in the car pass, so don’t install any car packs.
I literally had to reinstall Windows. Start fresh, format the drive and re-install it (make sure you create a media creation tool first). Uninstalling the cars individually won’t work, I had to start from scratch.
On my fresh Windows install, I installed the game to my Windows drive, Launched it, Worked. Installed the VIP, Launched it, Worked, Welcome Pack? Worked. Then Installed DLC packs Fortune Island and LEGO, Launched = Worked. Installed the Car Pass, Launched…Hangtype:Activation.
I had to reinstall Windows AGAIN! Then repeated everything up to and excluding the Car Pass and all seems okay so far (knock on wood), it’s been a week.
I am not happy about this, it’s probably the worst experience I’ve had with a PC game, nothing has ever needed such drastic steps to work, it’s actually shameful.
Also, remember this worked for me, it may not for you, so it’s on you to take the risk and deal with installing all your programs again - make sure you backup your stuff before you do anything - making a list of installed programs helped me out.
Edit: Someone earlier in the thread mentioned Dolby Access (DA), I just want to mention that I had DA installed prior to FH4 and there seems to be no conflict between the two (for me).
I cant launch forza horizon 4. I have latest win 10 updates (2004). The window with the game cover appears and after a few seconds it disappears.
I actually let download whole thing FH4 standard and whole ultimate addons (inc cars).
Didn’t start on first try, but did on second and now is ok on first.

But sync didn’t go as planned, as it seems my yesterdays play session on laptop didn’t sync as it should, even though I waited few min before shutting it down.
So first sync goes on, throws error on 98%, retry … profile no longer available.

I have a bit older Sunrise folder backup, so ok, but wait, what’s going on on laptop … says I have newer save on it then in cloud, so use newer and up it.
Wait few min, 7zip the sunrise folder, copy to desktop, delete desktop sunrise folder, unzip the one from laptop, success

Forza Team, Microsoft have allowed this same issue to go on for years without any help at all. People are messing with their system and you should make a big stink about it as all they seem to care about is series X.
Activation Error type “Hang” for at least a year I think. None of the solutions work properly. It takes sometimes up to 90 min to just launch the game and even then online features could become unavailable and you have to re-launch the app again with constant crashes on launch. I have noticed that only thing that helps is to close all background apps like Discord or Steam. You can launch them with no problem just after the game starts and that fact has no effect on how game runs after successful launch
Good news. The new update does indeed fix the “crash hang type: activation” issue. Of course i was still a bit sceptical, after the devs rather cautiously addressed the issue during Monday’s Series 28 live stream, but thankfully the update does help - at least in my case. And yes, the new update is already out - try to manually check for updates if the download doesn’t start automatically.

Well, the wording makes it sound like that the issue isn’t necessarily fully solved. I really hope that i will never ever have to deal with this issue again. The game works for me after this update and i sure hope it stays this way.
Dear Sirs, after two months of not working, today, after the new update, Forza Horizon 4 works. My problem was the “Hang Type : Activation”
Haven’t tried it yet but heard the recent patch would fix this issue, hope it works on my machine. Here is my sincerest belief that popular “protest” of non-working software pushed the teams to actually find a fix. Good for the consumers.

I tried to find solution for launching our game Forza Horizon 4 since July. In June I think I found solution, but as it turned out for only for a moment…. My solution was simple: I closed process: Nvidia Container, I don’t know how it was to helps, but it works, but only for some days, after update Nvidia Graphics soft. and the game of course – is stopped.
Since that time I tried to find proper solution. Some weeks ago I posted also post here where I provided my description of issue with that mentioned game. Since that time, I watched many of videos on YouTube, reads many of forums, I followed everyday this forum. I also contacted with Support Team. Nothing works… I don’t reinstall system, because is only one game, is many of nice games. I have time for Crew2 – time for other activities in home due the COVID situation. I thought that someday someone I will found solution how to launch the game. I hope is that the time… not only for me but also for you Guys.
I reinstalled the game two days ago, to same partition. I have win 10 (2004 ver) – and today I updated win 10 for most recent version. (There was some update: KB4579311) Today also I have Forza update.
I read on some old forum that someone kill the process connected with xbox game bar. To be honest I had no hope, because many of times I installed the game over and over and nothing… till today…
Guys I click on start and open Forza Horizon 4 – On screen appeared Mclaren Senna – Logo and them immediately a opened task manager and killed process: “gaming services” and if was appeared again Ikill them over and over and you don’t guess - game was started in few sec. I have Aorus software and ESET and these app were not closed, they are working in background.
I change for test Aourus graphics settings to OC, and is also working .
It is looks like not very accurate solution but in my case that was worked. Sometimes the simple solutions are the best. If that mentioned solution is not working for you I will be sad, because I don’t want to be a let’s say “ chosen one” because I feel exactly the same what you feel, feel right know. I want to give a you hope, that someday we will find solution for everyone, not only for “chosen one’s peoples” I have hope that will helped you also, if not pls think positive that someday solution for you will be found. So, is Hang type: activation fixed ? Has anyone tried it ?
It is supposed to be officially fixed for “most users” per the developers. The issue is trending on the official Forza Discord channel. Good news.
Be aware not all open than close errors are related to hang type.
Okay, I have reinstalled it on a machine that the game has not run on since early August. It does run now, although it does pause for about 3 minutes on the initial gray screen, and then again for another 3 minutes at a black screen following the Microsoft Studios animation. Not as quick as it should be, but at least it runs now.
Hi, finaly the last update fix the hang type error for me, but same as you the game take a lot of time to launch, a few minutes on the initial gray screen and others few minutes after the MS Studio animation.
The game is on SSD and the only extensions installed are Fortune Island and Lego Speed.
An idea to solve this problem? Connection issues? (I can’t join a multiplayer Matchmaking, Teredo problem too)

Finally! They’ve fixed the “Hang Type” crash and I can get back to the game after a three-month break…
When I start up Horizon 4 on my Xbox the game always crashing out. It shows the turn 10 logo after that the game crashing out and not loading any more. What can I do now? Yesterday I played whit the game and it ran perfectly. Please help whit a solution or update that fix the problem.
Game finally works for me - it takes a little time but it starts up reliably now.
Now I have a new problem: my save profile is apparently ‘unavailable’, even if I copy/paste the backup I made into the directory it refuses to load my save. I think trying to fix hang type: activation problem I reinstalled the game about 3 times and I may have wiped my save on the cloud. I really hope support gets back to me and can fix this because otherwise I’m just done with this game.
