FAQ: How are cars added and why are some left out of the game?

This situation is just getting worse and worse for JDM fans.

Just to say it: This is not a post to critizise the workers working on the Games. We as a community know they are doing the best to make us gamers happy, but against some car companies and their beliefs.

With the recent announcement of most of the cars in Forza Horizon 4 came a shocking message: There will be no Mitsubishi in this game. It appears to be the same issue, that Turn10 has with Toyota. But I want to ask you: Why does this happen?

I belief it’s the reorganization of the companies. Toyota and Mitsubishi are both japanies companies, who are both putting all of their effort into green cars (except the new supra). With this shift from what they once were, they appear to lose their mind! It wasn’t the Eco-Cars that made these great names famous, it was their great JDMs, their Racing- and Rally Pedigry and the Tuning capabilities of these cars. This is appearently not how these “new” companies want to be seen. But it leaves us petrolheads hanging. And we’ve seen the reactions to the bulls**t that Toyota was doing, especially with their explanation of “people not buying the real cars because you can drive them in Racing Games”, which is simply not the case. It’s more the other way: Many people buy these cars, BECAUSE they could drive them in the games before. Maybe Toyota and now Mitsubishi want some of their new models in the games to gain customers but what do I know.

My 2 questions are:

  1. Why does this happen and out of what motives?
  2. How can we as car guys prevent this from happening?

(Sorry in case I misspelled something)

Toyota and now Mitsubishi? Ok, I hate to be cynical and to be “that guy” but I have a feeling Sony is doing something behind the scenes because GT can’t touch Forza now.

Toyota turned right around and you saw their non-race division vehicles to be in GT and GT only. Polyphony Digital/Sony should just come clean and say they inked an exclusivity deal with Toyota/Mitsubishi for GT.

You can be absolutely sure this has been the case and this is absolutely terrible coming from a company whose fans have always cried about not having Porsches in their game.

This is a bigger blow to me than Toyota’s absence, really, as I enjoy driving the Evos much more than anything Toyota offers, especially in a rally-based setting. And I was hoping for the inclusion of an L200 variant in the game. :frowning:

When looking at the big picture, this is unsurprising, as these two companies are probably the least interested in promoting their sportscars. Mitsubishi doesn’t even offer any currently, and Toyota’s GT86, besides being a very poor seller, is more Subaru than Toyota, considering the engine is Subaru and the car is assembled at the Subaru plant. The new Supra also doesn’t have “it”, it’s more marketing than quality. They really went for the easy bucks here.

Yet another reason why I’ll never support Sony nor any of its products (besides the batteries, but those are made by Fujitsu), and why I never drive any of the few Toyotas in FM7. Avoiding the Mitsus will be more difficult, though I do prefer Subaru’s offerings.

Gran Turismo Sport supposedly has 5 million players, but the last sales report was 3 million. It does not bode well for a game like GTS to have nearly double the players relative to copies sold. The amount of sales is unsurprising, as it’s a big household franchise without a new game for several years, but the quality just isn’t there. That they have to compensate their huge deficit in car count with exclusivity deals is just pathetic, much like how Activision capped Destiny 2 on the Xbox One X on Sony’s demand.

If it’s true, I don’t see why a racing game only on one platform needs exclusive deals with car manufacturers and tracks.

3 million sales isn’t actually that great, considering how well known the series is and the amount of PS4s sold. There’s not many PS4 exclusive racing games to compete with it either.

It’s just the way Sony does things. They are notorious, when it comes to PS exclusives and even avoiding any kind of cross platform in multiplayer games (Fortnite, Rocket League etc). The main selling point for PlayStation are PS exclusive games (also the reason, why I bought it) and they are doing everything to maintain that. Not ideal situation for us, the customers.

In those instances it would help console sales (even if we don’t like it), but supposedly locking a car manufacturer to themselves is just rubbish behaviour. I think they have exclusivity with Pike Peaks and haven’t done anything with it yet either.

Just out of curiosity, the random year Mazda RX7 FD…97? What makes that version so special? It looks like a base model with no front or rear spoiler (from 93 r1 models or 99+ RZ or Spirit R models), it doesn’t have the iconic 3 spoke steering wheel (from 99+ models), it doesn’t have the iconic 6 o’clock tach (like 99+ models), and unless my RX7 fandom (and 15+ years ownership of the model) knowledge fails me…I honestly don’t see the significance of that model year besides the updated taillights. Was this the only year you could get a hold of to scan? Is the Spirit R RX7 specially licensed or restricted from being put in certain games? Why aren’t there aero options to at least simulate the more iconic years (93-95 R1 front lip and rear spoiler, 99+ front bumper and rear spoiler)? I’m really curious about this and it’s been bugging me since it was omitted and has been missing since FM4.

Please lets not moan about Mitsubishi for the next 2 years. It is what it is and there is nothing anyone can do.

They’re practically history in the real world, so it’s fitting for the game.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t even notice Mistubishi was missing when I was reading the list. They have such a pathetic lineup in North America I forget they exist sometimes.

Just to point this out, it says “At this time”. We could technically get them at a later time. Toyota was different, because they did not agree with having their cars tuned, something that you can’t really do in GT sport. Toyota chose not to be in the game, Mitsubishi and Turn 10 couldn’t reach a deal, there is a difference in why they both aren’t here.

I don’t remember the last time I drove a Mitsubishi in a Forza Motorsport game and I’ve done like every division in the leagues. Just checked they are all AWD so good for Horizon, I have used them there at times. Only 6 anyway, I dislike AWD in Motorsport so that explains it.

If some manufacturer wants to step away, that’s fine, their loss as I see games as great marketing for them, but Turn 10 should then bring in others to fill in those gaps.

How about Skoda? Rimac? Duesenberg? Imperial? Who else is missing or has never been in Forza games?

Just look at the defunct US companies alone: List of defunct automobile manufacturers of the United States - Wikipedia

Any of those would be most welcome.

I have to say that I’m very disappointed with the final car list, and I’m beginning to strongly regret picking up an XB1X for this game. I do think I will check the receipt and write a letter to corporate at this point.

The loss of Mitsubishi is obviously huge, but then I see a lot of talk in the beginning of the thread about cultural significance. Looking at the car list, I see hardly any attempt at representing the car scene in the UK and a lot could have been fixed with cars that were omitted. There’s only one Peugeot, the Clio V6 has gone missing, no Citroen, Skoda, or SEAT, a general lack of the cars that were really significant in the Max Power/Bansai era, lots of missing Alfa Romeo that are coveted by petrolheads in the UK… The developers have talked a lot about trying to create “Britain”, but the effort that has went into the car list makes it feel like a British inspired burger from McDonalds. Yes, it has English cheese on it. Yes, it has fried potatoes. Yes, it comes in a wrapper with a Union Jack… But it’s still obviously American, just with some British flair.

Agreed, it was bad enough in FH3 with hardly having any RHD cars, but at least all the American cars made sense since they are quite popular over there. For a game set in the UK, it doesn’t make sense to have a huge swath of American cars while many great Euro sports cars and brands are MIA. If there was one Forza game that Rolls Royce should have been in, it should have been this one. Being able to own Edinburgh castle but not park a Rolls out front is a crime against humanity.

Losing both Toyota and Mitsubishi is also really disappointing, they have some awesome cars. Hopefully they’ll return in a future update (along with the other missing Euro cars).

I assume JDM fanatics begin to see why FH4 wasn’t set in Japan.

1 yr later and still no Toyota despite the god only knows how many threads. I’m sure Turn 10 wants to have them but maybe you can write or tweet Mitsubishi. That might be more productive.

So after playing 10 Forza titles still no:

Mustang 1965- 1966 Fastback
Mustang 1967- 1968 fastback like the Bullit 390
Mustang 1967-1968 HT

A game set in Britain and Rolls-Royce isn’t in there? Pretty disappointing. On top of that my favourite British sports car is now also missing: McLaren MP4-12C. Not really impressed with the list, although the Eagle Speedster and Cerbera Speed 12 are cool returns.
