Experienced Tuner's Opinion Needed

Hey guys,

I’ve recently been trying to learn how to tune and came across a set of videos on YouTube teaching people how to tune, in the alignment video he states that when you tune camber you should switch on telemetry and everytime your camber degrees shows up positive while going around a corner you should go into tune setup and take it down a notch. Now I don’t know whether you guys agree with this statement and that’s partly why I have come on here, all I want you guys to do is look at my tune that I have done so far and tell me whether it sounds like im on the right track. As always I’m greatful to everyone that gives their opinion.

Ok the car I chose to tune was the Ford Fiesta ST 2014

The changes I have made are as follows:

Tyre Compound: Race

Tyre Width: Front - 235 Rear - 235

Springs and Dampers: Race

Tyre Pressures: Front - 28.0 PSI Rear - 28.5 PSI

Camber: Front - Negative 3.8 degrees Rear Negative 3.8 degrees

Toe: Front - Positive 0.2 degrees Rear - Negative 0.2 degrees

Caster: 5.9 degrees

I’m mostly concerned about the camber as I have a feeling that you guys are going to say they shouldn’t be the same but it seems to handle a lot better than it did, I know I should really have bought all the parts first but was trying to see if the instructions in the video helped me. As I said above, all opinions welcome and thank you

Here are a couple of threads that will help you out…

You also might want to search for a thread stared by GRD 4 3L for using the Test Track…he has some great info posted, along with many other posts on many of the adjustments.

BTW, which track would you like to run the car, and, I am assuming you want to leave it in same class?

I’ll check it out later today.

I was using it on Bernese Alps - Festival Circuit. But to be honest I wasnt tuning it for leaderboards or MP, I just wanted to try and make a half decent tune and then gradually push myself to make better tunes fit for Leaderboards and MP. I love the tuning side of it now, being able to see your car improve bit by bit. I’m trying to learn one part at a time, I’ve got the tyre side of things down but I’d say the tyres are the easiest part, Its not difficult to get them 32-35 PSI and correct temperature

Just to make sure…with the only parts upgrades (tires and springs) you made, the car is sitting at a C432…correct! You probably know this, as you add the rest of parts you will have to revisit these settings again.

To your current build, I am assuming you made NO changes to the default Forza 5 values for springs, ride height, and, damping (rebound, bump). I took this configuration to the Test Track and 3 of 4 tires temps are over 50 deg apart, so, camber is too high and not at equilibrium thus should not be the same, and, the warm tire pressure are off by 1.5 psi (front-2-back) and can be bumped up in pressure.

Just a thought…come up with a build for a class of your taste and I will provide you with feedback along with an alternate build that I would have pulled together for that class/track. Then we can follow the same process for the tune. Thoughts? Thanks!

Thanks for the awesome feedback and yeah yeah thats a cool idea will get on with it today, By the way do you have any idea how I can get my account on here fully activated? everytime I make a post it tells me my account is under moderation and my post will have to be passed through a moderator before it will go up, which in some cases takes several hours. thanks

As far as the account activation, there is a minimum number of posts/threads…so, no worries…just keep posting.

On the build and tune, I can help you through the steps once you are ready.

That sounds great, Well I’ve been doing ok so far but have reached damping and could do with some tips, if you need my car and setup so far I can give it. I’m guessing once damping is done I will have to revisit all the other tweaks that I have made to see if they need re-adjusting.

Not sure how much you’ll learn by tuning a slow car (top end wise) with already good handling with added handling upgrades on a track that won’t really test your tune. Odds are you can do a few random tweaks to get it to turn in better on a few sections and use car control to make up for the rest. Its an easy track with not much to it; especially when you’re running this sort of car.

Take that car to a technical track and the flaws will really come out and you’ll be forced to try different things. A track like catalunya GP or national or even Laguna Seca will challenge you. That would make a little more sense to me because generally speaking a fiesta is used as a grip car because that is where it is pretty good. I’m not sure how much you learn on the Alps will help when it comes time to tuning for all the other tracks. The Alps is kind of its own animal.

Are you running the widest width tires? If so, don’t do that on the fronts. Its overkill. Same goes for race tires. Drop the front tire pressure to 26 when you do this. Helps with the understeer and getting better turn in for FWDs. I did that with this car at launch and it was night and day.

As for telemetry, its not the end all be all for tuning. Don’t be scared to get a little crazy with the settings. There is nothing wrong with having identical front and rear camber. I’ve got a bunch of cars like this. However, I wouldn’t worry about the toe unless its what you really need to get the thing to work right.

Thanks for the advice Swerve, I tend to go for smaller front tires than the rear. I chose Alps kinda for that reason because its quite easy and could ease my way into tuning, once I have finished working on my current tune it will be my first fully completed tune and then I should have a better idea of tuning and I will then begin to challenge myself with faster cars, more difficult tracks and then I will also apply what I’m learning for FM5 to FH2

No problem. I get where you are coming from and is why I was suggesting other tracks for this particular car. I’m not sure if adjustments that would normally mess you up on other tracks will not be noticed on this track and may give you a false sense of understanding. Like if you were in a muscle car and trying to get it to work around the alps, then yea you could probably learn a few things because you’ll have both understeer and oversteer issues depending on the corner. You do seem aware that you have a ways to go, which is good, so my concern can be ignored. lol.

Nice choice with the smaller front to rear tire ratio.

Thanks Swerve,

But it’s because of this fantastic Forza community why I’m starting to get the idea’s behind tunes, if it wasn’t for guys like yourself, PRKid, BIG WORM 80, Johnson and YouTube guys like Moneyman300, Stella Stig and ROT KING III I wouldn’t have a clue lol. Just wish I had started tuning sooner.
