Even with all its graphics photorealism, this game doesn't have proper time of day illumination

If you look closely at the shadows casted by the trees for example, you’ll see they just “jump” some spaces away every 5 seconds or so.. and this isn’t a problem of graphics settings, it happens on every setting..

This once you discover it, kinda breaks the immersion a lot.. of course you’ll only notice this when driving slowly or taking pictures, or just plainly not moving the car, but it is noticeable.

And i mean come on, even gta 5 that was released in 2013 had this.. please fix it.

And that is ruining my QoL

Best to try not to think about it. Every game has to make decisions how best to model their time of day and shadow movements, and balance it with how the finished product looks. I once tried tracing the shadows in FM7, and found that there seemed to be 3 or 4 light sources, depending on where you are on the track, which doesn’t work because the last I checked, the Earth only had one sun. It might not be perfectly accurate, but it’s not exactly game breaking.

This is a thing that happens with pretty much ALL games that feature a dynamic time of day. The more steps, the more processing power it uses, so a balance need to be found in development.

Then at least allow it for higher settings don’t you agree?, not like right now that is like this in every setting…

You wouldn’t see this on the Xbox for sure, but the processing needed would require very top end gaming rigs. You notice it when your sitting steal. which I don’t do much in the game.

Gta 5 did it on the same console you are playing right now… this should be possible to do, without any high end rig, it’s just programming, not really that resource intensive.

I’d argue Forza is quite a bit more graphically intensive than GTA5. Every where that is sealed off behind a fence without a road has no floor hitbox either, saves space.

Not really, there are several more physics effects involved in gta, with all the explosions, npcs, police filling the map, etc. PG should have done this right… in 2019 this seems cheap.

Now i’m not saying that this ruins the game or that i won’t play anymore, etc. lets not go to the extreme… but this is something that in any modern game that has realistic graphics should be done properly.

I watched the tree shadows, and it didn’t look like they were jumping to the motion of the car, it looked like they couldn’t produce the animated wind effect. Not such a big deal, at least they move smoothly with the car. The wind effect in the shadows looks like a cheat to save on the graphics engine.

No it’s not the wind effect, it’s the sun moving, the global illumination, you can notice this if you wait at least 30 seconds in the same spot, the movement only goes one way, and doesn’t come back, if it were wind, it would come back to the starting point.

It only goes one way, that’s why I said it was a cheat.

You should be racing around the map at 200MPH, not sitting still watching for things you don’t like.
Forza, you’re not doing it right!

Also it’s very resource intensive, it’s not a matter of just programming in. Or are you cognisant of what exactly needs reprogramming and how to do it?

Also the sun only goes one way? What like in real life?

The racing around thing is stupid… you WILL be quiet sometimes, and if you just “look” the road ahead, you WILL notice this, period.

The resource intensive is wrong, if gta 5, 5 years ago did it, this game can too.

The sun obviously goes 1 way, as it should yes, but the problem here isn’t THAT!, it’s that the shadows JUMP from space to space, instead of moving smoothly like real life (or gta 5).

Suddenly, first world problems are beginning to look rather grim.

My biggest problem with the light effects is, that the sun sometimes shines through thick layers of clouds and even hills.

Thank you for pointing this out. This has ruined the game for me. I can’t play anymore and it’s for the best so that I am not exposed to such a poorly developed game.

That’s a joke right?

Way to be super super nit picky

Just because game A has it doesn’t mean game B will. That argument is wrong at best.
GTA 5 is a step down from GTA 4 in many ways. The animation of characters is one, the way they cheat on light illuminating objects is another, there are many more.
This is to say no game is perfect and comparing different software with a different focus and a different development team is idiotic. Just because YOU think it should be done a certain way does not mean it will or even should be.
