Hi all … all my drifting is done in various flavours of RWD … I have vans … GT cars … JDM …
my favourite is a Merc SL65 FE (as it has drift tap boost that pulls in 9k per tap! Great for skill points.)
I am really comfortable drifting a RWD car around now … some fairly decent scores on the zones
I read that the best score are achievable with AWD cars … I have had a go but it just doesn’t feel natural … I can yank the e-brake on get it sideways and power through but I don’t seem to be able to link nice curved drifts … is it a tuning issue with front rear split ? or is it just a technique that needs to be learned that is different to RWD
any ideas?
dont go to AWD man,
whats yout GT man, i can invite you to the club that has all the #1 RWD drift zone scores, then you know where you are etc
needle climb is 563K RWD
I have seen some of your vids… I don’t think I am anywhere near that league!
Although I did get 61k on the Ambleside drift in a Morris Minor … I have shared a couple unconventional setups for drift cars (Morris / 1970 Camaro) …do enjoy tinkering
I am using a regular controller if that makes any difference
GT is Honor Virtus
I don’t have Fortune island … things like that I normally get once I have done the main game to death … give the whole thing a fresh feel (like when I bought Blizzard Mountain for FH3)
so stick with RWD …don’t get drawn to the dark side eh?

yea man… dont do the AWD thing lol
i can invite you to club RWD and use the friends/club board as the RWD filter ETC if you would like, then you can run agaisnt RWD scores
Yeah … do that … I am in a club but just accepted a random invite
I tried out your VW camper tune - it feels like it doesn’t quite have enough power and is compensating with high rear tyre pressures … (for my taste)
Please don’t take it as a criticism … as it actually makes me even more impressed by what you can do with it in your vids
Do you do all of the other stuff (danger signs /speed zones) or are you just focused on Drifting?
I learned to drift with my friend’s AWD tunes. They have a ton of power so they slide easily. I moved to stock Formula Drift so I could get used to RWD. After that I got some help making my own RWD drift tunes that actually work fine (most have lots of power, but there are some with lower power). Now I use AWD for seasonal stunts or Forzathons, and I use a stock Formula Drift #232 240sx with a custom paint based on my club for most of my normal stuff.
Well to your main question, AWD usually gets better scores because the car can gain speed rather than lose it while cornering because the front wheels are helping the car get pulled through the corner. That being said, for most drifters, they will see about a 1.25x score multiplier between RWD and AWD. So if you are getting 400K on lets say Needle Climb on Fortune Island with a RWD, then you should easily hit 500K in an AWD set up. The thing you have to watch out for are people using different settings while drifting. There are 4 settings, 2 between the controller and 2 between a wheel. This is VERY important when you are watching certain people and how they tune. Each setting is set up between Normal and Simulation steering. Most people will use a controller with normal setting. Very few people use Simulation steering with the controller. For a select few, they will use a racing wheel, and the models vary different from person to person but mainly they function the same. Most will use simulation steering to get the best experience and overall handling of the car, but very few will use Normal steering.
Why does this make a difference? The handling of the car is very, very different between each setting. Most of the time, these higher point runs are using a combination of a wheel and Simulation steering. This allows the user to keep the car “angle” locked while drifting and they need very little input to correct the car, or to keep it sideways. If you are using a controller, the car will be harder to keep in an angle lock because of how we use the joysticks to control the car and the limited move-ability of the sticks inhibits how we can control the car in most cases, although you do get a bit more flexibility if you’re using the Elite Controller with it’s extended thumbsticks it comes with.
The ones who are getting these ultra high scores, are tuned in a way to be angle locked and stick to the outside of a turn as much as possible. This means they drift opposite of the apex of a turn to maximize the points they are gaining. If you watch a video of how they are drifting, it is very easy to notice because the car does not flick from constant changes of the wheel and the car will just glide through everything without any hitch. Even in online play you can tell who uses a controller vs someone using a wheel, just watch the car itself and you will either see a very smooth drift, or some that the person is constantly making adjustments to the steering which makes the back end slip left or right during it’s turn.
Now there are some people who will swear up and down they are using a controller while they are drifting and everything looks absolutely perfect with no twitching. Every single one of those people I have met, who either throws videos up or streams I have asked for them to actually turn a camera on and prove they are using a controller and every single one of them either doesn’t answer back, laughs and calls me a troll, will say I am jealous (which is laughable in every single situation) or just plainly can’t show verification that they are using a controller. I still can’t fathom why it has to be such a big deal to show how they are drifting unless they have something to hide, like having a paperclip in their controller or wheel to stop the rotation so they can get the angle they want every time, which has been used in previous titles by the way.

I have about 377k on the needle climb (only recently bought the fortune island extension) that is withRWD & controller…
Got 300k with my Morris Minor - I do like unusual drift cars as well as the JDM stuff
There is deffo a bit more to come as I haven’t done a run that felt good all the way… Happy with most corners , make a hash out of 1 or 2
The needle is great place to prove new drift cars
Gonna stick to rwd … If I can 3* all zones with rwd I am happy with that
You can drift pretty much everything in a RWD and get 3 stars, but the AWD just make it a bit more easier on the dirt tracks for obvious reasoning. Needle Climb is an excellent way to test cars and that is pretty much where I do all of my tuning at now, and I don’t consider any of the tunes ready unless the hit 300-400K+ depending on their class. For instance I have a D class drifter that can hit 300K on the downhill, but another similar D class will hit 350K in it.
