I’m interested to learn what better players than I use. I have a wheel, but I really suck with it, so use controller. I play chase view because I have a better sense of how the car is moving.
How about you?

In the Forza Motorsport games i can see the use of a wheel being very good. However in Forza Horizon games i would prefer to use a controller because of the many features other than just driving. When it comes to the camera, I find the far chase camera the best to use because you just feel like you have more control over the car. In past games the cockpit camera has been the best but i feel like for FH3 the far chase camera is best.
With a wheel, I prefer the Hood view because the cockpit view is pulled too far back and my wheel isn’t close enough to the TV to use it very well.
With a controller, I prefer cockpit view because it is more realistic and slightly easier to drive with.
I am faster with a controller, but I generally have more fun with a wheel.
On all Forza games, controller mostly because I really can’t be bothered spending the money on a wheel just for my xbox.
On Horizon games, mostly the furthest 3rd person view.
But on Motorsport games, only bonnet view.
I would use bonnet view in Horizon games but it’s so shaky compared to Motorsport games so it’s really off putting.
Most of the top drivers drive with a pad in chase view.
For most racing games I use my wheel (Thrustmaster TX Leather Edition w/ upgraded pedals) and one of the in-car camera angles, but for the Horizon games I typically play with a controller (elite). Horizon is arcadey and hectic enough that it’s beneficial to be able to see around you. I use the close chase cam. Since it’s not a sim racer, while wheel support is decent, it’s not the reason to play the game. I use an in-car view and the wheel sometimes while playing Horizon, but not super frequently. It’s not as good as something like Dirt Rally / Assetto Corsa anyway.
Controller, chase view for racing/fast freeroam driving, cockpit view for drifting.
I use a wheel and have since Forza 2. I don’t drive a car with a controller in real life. I use Hood View as Cockpit is too limiting in it’s view/ In fact, if I had a car that had that limiting a view I would sell it.
Thats because you are only able to view a small part of what is viewable. If you had a much larger monitor, triple screens or were able to sit much further back you may be able to get a less limited viewing picture but the fact of the matter is most dont understand what they are supposed to be seeing. Not that it really matters as fov is not adjustable in forza anyways but below explains it.
The photo below shows what you are actually seeing with a proper fov on a single screen in cockpit view. A very limited window into the real world. This gives you the most realistic view but many see it as a very limited view. This is why to properly race in cockpit and have a realistic view you need triple monitors or a much much bigger monitor and sitting further way.
Games like Dirt Rally and Project cars allow FOV adjustments and/or seat adjustments and that is really what the entire Forza franchise lacks to be even considered taking serious in cockpit view IMO.
I have a 65" TV and for PCARS and Dirt Rally what you have indicated in your screenshot is almost what I set my FOV at in these games (I see a bit more from the wheel and dash, usually just enough for the speedometers of the dash. That feels realistic for my distance to my TV and size of my TV. The Forza dash cam is waaaay off.
But again, this is just a simcade game (and a great one at it) that is simply best played in chase cam (or sometimes hood cam if you want) with a controller.

I use a controller and chase far because this is not real life.
keyboard and far chase
Elite controller, would use a wheel, but don’t have the room or time to use, and I also feel if I switch to a wheel now I’ll lose the edge I’ve gained throughout the years of playing forza, when I really put it down I can hold my own quite well, and from a standard to an elite controller was a small improvement. As for views, in single player I use primarily hood or cockpit view, mainly hood, cockpit on lower class cars with a good fov, but in multiplayer, games or collisions on racing I use chase far to try to minimize trading paint. If I’m doing collisions off racing online I go back to hood.
I have a wheel and rather expensive rig but the FH series is simply not made to be played in cockpit view with a wheel. So I use chase cam far and a (elite) controller.
If you believe otherwise, please do one of the off-road races in cockpit view, with all that shaking and seeing the sky more than the road through your windscreen it’s just impossible to take this game serious. For asphalt races that’s a different story.
Controller and sofa for FH3, rig and wheel for Assetto, PCARS and Dirt Rally.
If I could plug my controller into my car in real life and it handled as well as the game, I’d seriously consider using it for my daily commuting. I’ve never liked wheels for racing games. They’re overpriced, cumbersome, and inconvenient. Never cared for flight sticks, either.
I use the hood cam these days, for the most part. The cockpit view is often like driving with one eye closed. Saying it’s fine on three screens doesn’t justify or excuse it - on the contrary, it concedes the point that it’s restrictive with a standard setup. PCars had a good default cockpit cam that gave you the entire windshield view, which is about the only good thing I can say about that game.
Controller and far chase. I tried using a wheel and shifter once, but it just slowed me down. I have been using a controller to race in videogames since the original Grand Tourismo 20 some years ago, so It’s muscle memory now.
I use an Xbox Elite controller and the chase far view. I do have a Logitech G920 wheel but i never use it as I prefer the controller.
Controller, mostly cockpit view, sometimes hood or bumper cam.
When i started playing FM1 i used chase cam, then moved to bumper cam and haven’t gone back to it.
I’ve seen a few folks mention the elite controller. Is it worth the $$$? I like the idea of it, but in Canada it’s close to $200. Also, can you use the paddles with the keyboard attachment hooked up?
Wheels for forza are strictly for immersion or for people that cant use a controller. I will say though horizon 3’s wheel settings are much better than past efforts and I’ve found settings that make the game much more enjoyable for me. At this point im not interested in setting record times, i usually enjoy just taking stock cars for a drive or mildly upgraded ones. I usually use cockpit view but hood view is better for competitive play for most cars.
