Curves and other difficulties

Hi painters!

I’m (absolutely) new to designing car liveries in Forza (and pretty much any kind of art).

Lots of designs in game and posted here are just jaw dropping but I seem to struggle even with basic things when creating my own decals.

In particular curves of any kind present a huge challenge when trying to match them with built-in shapes.

How do you guys do this? Is there any Youtube tutorial or something? How does one create, for example, Red Bull logo in Forza?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you’ve got a Windows PC, check out the guide for creating accurate logos. This should help when creating more complex logos like Red Bull which you mentioned. Hope this helps, and any more questions feel free to ask!

Yep, I’ve been using that guide and it was of great help (otherwise I’d probably never got anywhere at all)!

But being completely new to the thing I wonder that may be I’m using the tools in non-efficient way.

Like for example, in this Punisher logo:

I spent more time getting those P and R letters right than everything else combined, just because round parts of them don’t match existing decals’ radius.

Another example is when I tried to do GT-R logo:

I thought it to be a quickie, ended up spending almost an hour (if not more) just on that R.

So I’m basically wondering if there’s a trick to it. Would be really cool to see how experienced painter creates a decal with rather complex curved lines.

I think not logos but design on cars.

No mate, I do mean logos specifically, see the post above.

PS: It looks like I’m on a watchlist or something for some reasons. My posts are getting into pre-moderation before getting posted, so that one above only appeared like 6 hours after I wrote it  Guess it’s because I’m new here.

With logos with more complex lines, such as Red Bull for example, I find the best shape to use is the crescent shaped piece which I have (badly) circled below haha. I then will normally use the circle to fill in the outline of the shape. The time aspect of painting is something that improves with time, once you get used to knowing what shapes work where you’ll get quicker!

With regards to the logos themselves, this is an example of the outer shape of the Red Bull logo I created. I changed the colours so that the outline is in white and the filler is in black so it’s easier to distinguish between the two. I am by no means an experienced painter but I hope you find this useful!

Thanks Eddie, this is great!

Definitely useful, gives me an understanding how to approach some stuff! Thanks a mil!

Hi,

On FM6 I made a tutorial using one of the ( from the fonts tab as an alternative to that crescent shape.

That may give you an option for drawing curves.

Although in all honesty for the Punisher one a half circle probably would’ve done the job. You may have been able to use it for the GTR as well but that might have been trickier if it’s metallic around it.

Brilliant, exactly the kind of tutorial I was looking for!

Thanks man!

PS: Will this pre-moderation thing end one day? Quite annoying to be honest…

No worries, the moderation thing will likely change for you - not sure if it’s a set number of posts or combination of post count & forum behaviour. Keep contributing in a positive fashion & you’ll be o.k

Good luck with the painting. I’ve been painting a bit this morning & had forgotten just how time consuming it is lol.

Mind you it’s a tad more complicated than Casper was currently on 1500+ layers most of which are brackets!

Thanks again to all for your tips.

I gave it a go this morning and indeed getting curves right became much easier.

Looking great mate keep it up!

Thanks mate, means a lot to me!

Trees gave me a bit of a headache but I got them to look kinda alright. Probably overdid it - hit the layers limit when copying them on the car, had to chop pieces out in the end

Thanks Dave!

Each tip helps!

Just wanted to say thanks again for all the tips and show a bit of result.

Had a run at Ferrari horse and even though it took quite a bit of time, I think it worked out pretty well.

Here’s a quick car I put together after finishing the logo:

And while doing that, I needed a break at some point and do something easy, so created a Peppa Mini for my kids:

Nice work Quadro - the Horse looks good to me & Peppa’s really popping - great colours and spot on image. Works well on the mini.

Glad you made peace with the curves - the livery editor can let you do pretty amazing things. If you end up with more questions - post away and someone will be happy to help I’m sure.

Another go at curves:

As usual it didn’t quite go as expected. I thought the symbols - crown and whatever those creatures are - would be a challenge but letters should be easy. Turned out to be completely other way around - letters gave me quite a bit of headache.

But I really wanted to do this design - I own Q50 and Corona is my favorite light beer
