I too was having CTD while in menu screen or loading. Very irritating to crash while loading. I found that using RamMap for crashing while loading a track did the trick.
So I thought about it a little further and found out, at least since Falls Creator Update for Win10, that when using a SSD for Win10 the pagefile was set aggressively low.
Something like 2MB. When usually it’s much higher.
After increasing the pagefile and placing it on a standard Hard Drive I’ve been playing CTD free even before this recent update. Here is a video that will show you how to increase the pagefile.
You have to see what amount is currently used. You will see that at 3:25 om video at bottom called “Total Paging File Size for All Drives”. If it’s less then 3MB you want to raise it.
With 16GB of ram I only increased it to around 5120.
There is a formula for this. You can using 1024 (x) “How many MB you want”
IE: 1024 (x) 5 = 5120
Here is something interest. After I re-enable pagefile for C: Drive (just using “system manage size”) and update graphics drivers to the graphics for Forza 7 get reset.
Not a big deal. Has this happened to others?
I have also found running without a page file at all fixed crash to desktop problems that started after the last update a few days ago. Also my screen transitions in menus etc are all snappier and smoother. It just seems more stable with it off.
Agreed. But I doubt they will respond.
Either 1 of 2 things are happening with their PC.
They “streamlined” the install process leaving out key aspects of the OS by calling it “bloat”. You see, when you think something is “bloat” it doesn’t matter if it’s a necessary aspect of the OS. It can get thrown out from the install process. Which has and will bork PC since it’s inception.
They have defective hard drives.
MS will mandate some sort of pagefile even if it’s 200K or something like that. And yes, even if it’s a SSD. But in either case using a pagefile does not cause crashes. Even if you have 32 to 64 GBs of ram having a pagefile doesn’t negatively impact an app like that.
Also, it’s common knownledge, well should be, that games and apps are created to use a pagefile. Even if you aren’t told that it does use a pagefile. One should assume that a pagefile is recommended for optimal operation of the game/app.
Side note:
I will say that after a combination of:
OS Updates
Game Updates
Hardware Updates (video card driver updates)
It is advantageous to delete the pagefile, reboot and recreate it using the same specs for the pagefile you had before.
Hmm my pagefile by default is near 8GB, almost exact same size as my memory itself. Still crashes, i think 8GB is just not enough for this game or something.
@The Sniper 8U have you you crashed this week or is it completely fixed for you?
It’s fixed as far as I know. I’m playing at 1440p. As you can see I’m near 7GB. So you might be right. You might need to upgrade your ram.
But before you do that. Increase your pagefile. You said it’s near 8gb right? Well, I noticed that for me I needed more then 8GB. As it was using near 8GB pagefile in game!! So I up’d it.
What you see on screen is not my max pagefile.
Win10
Hold Down the window key and Pause Key at the same time
Select Advance System Settings
Select the 1st Settings… button
Select the Advance Tab
Select the Change Button
Select Custom Size for the selected HD’s:
Here is what I suggest you try. If you are on C:\drive do something like this:
Initial Size: 3072
Max Size: 16384
(Click on Set Button)
If you have multiple drives, all the same make/model, you can divy it out. (3 or more drives)
Initial Size: 3072
Max Size: 5102
(Each Drive)
(Click on Set Button)
For Just 2 Drives
Initial Size 3072
Max Size: 7168
(Each Drive)
(Click on Set Button)
I use 3072 as this is close to what windows defaults to. The max size will allow for some breathing room in game without the need to increasing the initial size while in window 10.
You maybe prompted to reboot your PC once you click on OK for the Virtual Memory Popup Screen and OK for the Performance Option Screen.
Think i might have misread the first time, it said currently allocated was near 8000, however it was not custom but managed by windows itself. Have set it to 3072/16384 now, will report back later when i got the chance to play around long enough.
Reverted Windows 10 back from Creators Edition (framerate drops and massive stuttering after update).
Disabled Xbox Game Bar from Control Panel (everything related to it, DVR, everything).
Increased W10 pagefile to Min 7500 and Max 15000.
Updated Nvidia Drivers to 388.XX (last one, can’t remember the exact last 2 digits).
Updated Game via Windows Store “Updates” to last version (which, in itself seemed more stable).
In-game Resolution setting to “Window size”, full screen mode (watch out for this, because when FM7 advises resolutions it could be the case that it’s the wrong one. I noticed that I had been playing @ 1440p res just because of not checking this and FM just automactilly setting this).
Also, When I play FM7, I close antivirus apps, profilers (such as logitech for wheel) and every so often I use Wise Memory Optimizer to clean DDR.
Mind you that all of this is in a fresh Windows 10 installation.
Played a couple hours since, have not had a single crash since changing it. Looks promising so far.
Tried scrolling long time through the car selection screen and it did not crash my game like it did before, i am not afraid to change cars anymore during online lobbies.
Overall menu usage also is a lot smoother now, going through different set of wheels is almost instantaneously.
Good to read. You are mirroring my experience. Specially when trying to select a car to buy. It’s real smooth once you increase the pagefile.
Glad it’s working out for you. Enjoy your racing!
You might want to race 3 or so laps with Video > Advance Tab > Performance Target: Unlocked vs 60 FPS cap (no vsync). I found, with higher pagefile, that 60 FPS is a bit more responsive and smoother if you are getting more then 60 fps in races.
I can’t put my finger on it yet. But something about 60 FPS, now, makes the game a tad bit better. Specially when you are in the pack of other cars.
I tried 16 Gb pagefile size and sometime games crash in menu (when u choose a car in multiplayer)
Don’t think it s related to pagefile size.
hope a patch soon cos we have this problem since the begining
