I know. Most of you are probably thinking, huh? Isn’t it obvious?
Well, for me, no. I’m a little bit long in the tooth and when I was a kid, “Convoy” meant one thing. Go to YouTube and look up CW McCall - Convoy. So I’ve got about 45 years of de-programming to get through in order to understand what the word means as far as this game goes. (I’ve only been playing Horizon since Horizon 4 and I already know it’s not about just forming a string of cars driving around in free roam).
So basic questions:
What’s the purpose of a convoy?
Do I need to communicate with others in the convoy at any time? (I don’t have a mic)
How do I get into one of these things and is there anything important for me to know if get in one? Feel free to explain it like I’m a 3 year old. I can be a little thick headed.
Other than playing with specific people, is there anything to be gained from these convoys?(achievments/etc)
Do the people in the convoys have to be ‘friends’?
A convoy is a group of max 12 players. It can be used to just drive around in freeroam without the other players disappearing like random players normally do. The leader of the convoy can also start races/events that all the other convoy members get invitations to. It’s basically ment to stay and play together with specific people.
IIRC there is an option to join a random convoy somewhere in the menu and there are also prompts that ask you if you want to stay with some people for example after an Arcade or a Tour. Normally you either start a convoy yourself which you invite others players to or you join one. You don’t have to be friends with other players to invite others or get into one but being befriended makes it easier to invite others and they can also join you if you’ve started a convoy if the feature isn’t blocked.
There is no specific chat or voice-chat option for convoys. You have to start an Xbox party via the app or have to use Discord or the like to talk with each other. So, a mic isn’t required.

I’m not aware of any specific convoy achievements but I don’t really care about them. There maybe are some that I simply haven’t noticed.
In general they’re usefull so I’d say I like them. The problem is that they can be bugged and sometimes players in the convoy don’t get an invitiation to join an event, get kicked out for no reason and things like this.
I guess but holy moly, watching Stevio flip though menus at warp speed is a little overwhelming on the brain. I’m more or less thinking about getting involved in one but just don’t want to look stupid. Haha.
Just wish they called it something other than ‘convoy’ but it guess it sort of fits since the ‘leader’ is leading the way to do whatever they want.
Is this cross platform too? Or am I limited to only other PC players?

Yeah, the term convoy isn’t that fitting and I also have the same “Rubber Duck” association as you. In German it’s called a “column” by the way which isn’t much better.
It’s cross platform. Stevio is on Xbox and I’m on PC for example and we’re also devided by at least an ocean. Therefore it actually works quite well I’d say.
The one and only time I ever accepted an invitation to a convoy, I was just driving along minding my own business and on a whim accepted the invitation, just to see what convoying was all about (this was FH4). Within about 30 seconds the driver rammed me off the road into the weeds, followed me, and kept ramming me until I completely shut down the game to get out of it.
