I can’t help but notice that the fastest times are simulator set ups (visible by telemetry on replays)
Am I wrong or is there that much room for improvement with a standard x box controller?
How many guys here can justify the difference between simulator set ups and controllers - time wise?
When you say “simulator set-up”, I assume you’re referring to a wheel & pedal rig? If so, I would say a controller is faster. Of course there are some quick guys using wheels but I’m pretty sure the fastest times have been put down using controllers.
I have a fanatec set up which I use for other games… I’m considerably faster using a controller vs wheel in Forza whereas any other game… I’m quicker with a wheel.
I don’t know what the OP is looking at, but you can often see it from the steering wheel angle, you can turn it much more with a wheel than a controller. I’ve seen replays where a wheel user had it turned to 90 degrees when the most you could get with a controller was more like 30 degrees.
Actually the wheel input telemetry has been updated for wheels, the little white indicate now rotates at 720 degrees (2 full turns lock to lock) rather than the 180 that it used to do.
Not sure if it shows this in replay telemetry though, will have to test it out
In this game the elite controller is hands down faster than the wheel for me. And by a considerable amount of time. That’s only true for Forza in my experience. PC2, AC and GTS do not play nearly as well on a controller and again for me I’m definitely faster with the wheel in those games. AC is almost unplayable with a controller, but it’s quite awesome with the wheel. PC2 after the latest update using and the TX has the best FFB and overall wheel performance I’ve seen so far. But with FM7 I’d bet a huge percentage of the top guys use a controller. One thing I can’t argue is the game is definitely more fun using a wheel. Once you get your setup dialed in to your liking there’s nothing quite like tearing up a track in a fast car while using a wheel.
I own an elite controller and a G920, I really don’t know if I am faster with a controller and to be honest I don’t really care to be faster since I am having fun playing with my wheel…
I’d say it comes down to experience with each, I was never fast when I used a controller (FM2, mostly just drifted), I learned to get fast after using a wheel and wanting to learn more than just driving sideways. So for me I am much faster on a wheel because it is what I’m used to, I never practiced at all on a controller so it’s very foreign to me.
I will say though that forza definatley has the steepest learning curve on a wheel
True. I doff my cap to all forza wheel users. I’d like to use mine but I find coming from PC titles to the One X, it feels like some feedback info is missing… although the FFB is improving all the time it still feels almost like trying to understand a paragraph with some sentences missing.
Take it from somebody who knows most of the top guys in forza.
They use controller simple answer because it faster with the way the games been designed unlike gran turismo or project cars were the game has been designed more for wheels.
First of all l am no top 100 driver but rankings up to 400 depending on the car/track combo are possible.
I’ve played for more than 30 years with all kind of controllers. On Xbox One l am using the Razer Wildcat and l am used to the standard controller too.
Last year l bought a wheel and was 3 seconds slower than with the controller when I started to race with the wheel. That first made me feel disappointed and I even thought of giving up and selling the wheel.
Nowadays l can honestly say that l am faster with the wheel than with a controller.
I’ve got a friend who has always been ~ 1 sec faster than me since the days of FM3. Now with the wheel l can beat him in rival events.
I’ve never ever thought that l would be able to be faster with my wheel than with the controller that l am used to since the good old ATARI 2600 times.
So I think it is hard to say who and how many people are using a wheel, especially from watching telemetry data.
I use an Elite controller but I can’t say it’s a massive difference over the standard one. Is there a guide to the best setup for it? I’ve tweaked the setup a bit and it’s definitely made a difference but not as much as I’d hope for.
The elite controller is no magic wand. Sure the trigger stops can help with locking up the brakes but if you’re used to running no ABS then there really isn’t a huge advantage. I can run the same times with the standard controller as I can with the elite.
My experience with a wheel is similar to Bluesky’s post above mine. Before I got a wheel, I always thought I was decently quick with a controller. Then when I got the wheel, my times took a nose-dive. But I’ve persisted and got better.
Since Forza 5 I slacked off on playing Forza with a wheel, mostly due to Microsoft’s peripheral policy and my refusal to buy a new wheel, especially; since my wheel still worked fine. So when I finally was able to use my wheel with Forza, I noticed my skills had greatly diminished. Now a days I am struggling to reclaim the speed I believe I had, but now I refuse to use a controller because the option to use a wheel is available to me.
Don’t get me wrong, the elite is a fine controller (great box and little set of swappable bits) but in terms of FM it makes no difference to me at all.
I’ve fiddled a bit with the options but they don’t seem to make much difference.
