Comparing GT2 to Motorsport to laugh at 'how far we've come in 24 years'

Gran Turismo 2 features nearly 650 automobiles and 27 racing tracks, including rally tracks.

Motorsport features 499 cars at launch and 20 different locations.

(All data from ign; motorsport’s numbers seem rather illogical )

Gran turismo 2 has split screen multiplayer. Motorsport has online multiplayer that works ‘most’ of the time

Motorsport finally has brought in tire strategy with different compounds in one race available but in gran turismo 2 you could run different compounds front and rear

In gran turismo 2 most vehicles have custom race modifications that add downforce tuning. These are available after level 3 (if i remember correctly) weight reduction. (Almost) every vehicle has its own custom race modifications

In motorsport most vehicles have the same forza aero kit to provide downforce tuning. Making every car look similar and usually look… not great (to keep the moderators happy)

Gran turismo 2 you only may choose manufacturer colours and cannot be repainted once you acquire it (except for apply race modifications which alter paint)

Motorsport has the same archaic paint system theyve been using for 15 years; and yet somehow this is the worst version of it yet where somehow black wasnt black, and now that black is in fact black now white isnt white… Like its the same as the last 10 games… How is it worse somehow?

Gran turismo 2 had 181 rims; easily visible as your car slowly rotates so you may see how your car looks with them and in decent lighting.

Forza motorsport has 308 rims; barely visible, seen from a horrible angle and unable to move the camera. The lighting is atrocious and you can barely make out the details of most wheels. Also many wheels have the brake calipers glitched through them on multiple vehicles

Gran turismo 2 has a used car dealership

Motorsport has a ‘balanced economy’ in which the pricing of cars seem totally nonsensical but im not really complaining because i can buy 5 of the worlds rarest cars for only 2 million.

Gran turismo 2 left you put parts on your cars without having to drive them for 2 hours first

Forza motorsport is the world’s first (and after its reception; almost certainly last) CarPG

Gran turismo 2 had license test (i hated these)

Motorsport (thankfully) does not

Yeah, home video game consoles & racing video games have been common for more than 40 years, and Xbox Live’s first online multiplayer games came out 20+ years ago…

…but it seems like so many “new” releases across the industry over the last decade went back to banging rocks together in the stone age, as if nothing has been learned this whole time.

It often feels like 1 baby step forward with many giant steps back.

You can compare GT7 to GT2 and you will still be disappointed… Sadly a lot of racing franchises are only regressing…

Comparing GT2 to FM23 is one thing, but 2005 and 2007 Forza also have their 2 cents to throw down…

Forza Motorsport usually had three different options for Forza aero, if the car had Forza aero available (Not every car had the option).

Diffuser upgrades (race rear bumpers) were also available… Albeit with some funny looking exhaust tips

A bit of a rarer upgrade was changeable taillight lenses!

(Though all of the ones I’ve found are very… Early 2000s, let’s say. Nothing like some shiny chrome taillights on your PT Cruiser track day special!)

Some of the body kit upgrades that you can find in FM2023 also debuted in FM2005… You would be amazed at how prevalent this is

(Also featuring customized taillights, and a wing that’s disappeared since then)

As a bit of a departure from customization related things, here is a screen of a pit stop screen that allowed you to change how much time you wanted to spend in the pits, depending on what things will be fixed or not

Forza Motorsport 2 was the first Forza to feature paintable brake calipers

And technically the first to have different compounds for a given tier of tire. 9 different compounds each for street, sport, and race. Imagine that…

Also note FM2 era wing and diffuser. Only one Forza option for wings unfortunately… But hey, I prefer this wing to the Xbox One generation wing

I would post more but I think that’s enough images to upload at once
