So I am unable to utilize manual shift with or without clutch due to nerve damage and as such I run automatic shift. I’m doing alright and starting to get a decent amount of top 500 times, but i am having trouble finding tunes that work well with Automatic shifting. I am slowly trying to learn how to tune for myself but I enjoy actually working on my driving skills more. I am mainly running rivals right now so I am looking more for leader board type tunes vs lobby.
So I have a few things I’d like input on, any input is appreciated greatly.
-
Suggestions on what cars and in what class work best with automatic shifting. (example '65 Mini in D and C class can be competitive)
-
Any tunes set up specifically for automatic shifting. (please give car, class and creator so I can find them)
-
I just bought the Car Pass, so any cars in the DLC packs that work well with automatic shifting and in what class. (This will really save me time chasing my tail on cars that just aren’t very good in auto.)
-
Any input on how and what to setup differently for a car with auto vs manual.
Thank you for taking the time to share your advice.

I think that it is more important to know what engines are being used for the build than the tune of the car. With auto you will not benefit from the Rally motor, or any motor that peaks early in the torque curve and drops off early as well, since these would require earlier shift points and you cannot change the shift point in auto, so you would be driving the car out of its power band the entire time.
You should look for builds that use flatter torque curves… other than that, I wouldnt say that there is much more that would differentiate an auto to manual tune… its all about the power curves and shift points.
In general it would be better to learn the basics of tuning yourself… so that you can better analyze which tunes you buy for the cars are better for you. Reading the power curves would probably benefit you the most. So if you want to get a tune for a car, look at the available motor swap options… often the ones that peak early will have more torque/power than the ones that peak late or run flat, but you almost always get better performance from the early peaking engines, but you have to shift them early to stay in their power bands… An auto user may get worse results with this than a setup with an engine with less power that peaks later in the power band where they will typically be.
In general, auto users should avoid the Rally motor! They will almost always be out of the power band.
Thank you for that input.
I was thinking all along that being able to adjust the shift points would make it easier to stay in the power band of a given engine so at least I am on the right path. Is there a way that I can see a tunes power curves when the tune is locked? Many tunes I find handle amazing, way better than I can get the car to handle, but the power band is not good for automatic, If I could just adjust the transmission shift points and leave the rest of those tunes locked that would be incredibly helpful, but alas that will likely never happen. I’ll keep looking for open tunes I can mess with and try to learn to tune better.

Hey, I’m just like you and drive auto. I have a couple B class tunes that I’ve uploaded for you so maybe you can give them a try.
I’ve added a bit of power to them because it’s a struggle trying to keep up to cars that run manual with clutch. I definitely feel your pain. You have to be a lot more precise in the corners.
- 1997 RX-7 that currently is at #267 at Prague Short Reverse (One point it was at #150 but I don’t race B class anymore)
- 2005 NSX that currently is at #304 and #351 for Road America and Road America Alternate respectively. (Also good for Spa)
- 1999 Elise for the shorter/tighter tracks. (I don’t have any times with it however)
- Mercedes 190E (because everyone has to have one for the Alps) that’s currently at #250, #389, #415 and #430 on various Alps tracks.
These are the cars I’ve felt I could keep up with best in the lobbies so give them a try if you’d like. Just search my gamertag “dc2steve”
Just want to help out a fellow automatic racer!
Rock it! Thanks a lot dc2steve. I will give them a try over the weekend and report back.
Every now and then I will try manual on shorter tracks and the big thing I notice is the ability to carry more speed thru the turns because you are using the engine to slow the car more than the breaks. This also allows the car to stay closer to the power band and thus accelerate out of the turn quicker. Once I start getting a good number of tunes that work competitively with auto I think I will make a post to help others and thank the people who’s tunes they are.
