From my very basic and rudimentary knowledge of car mechanics, an intercooler is a must for cars with Turbos. I know the front fascia on my Abarth is extended over a regular 500 so they can fit one in, as well as why there are larger vents for increased airflow.
However applying a Turbo and not purchasing an intercooler doesn’t seem to have any negative impacts in Forza. However, I was wondering if adding one anyway still had some sort of benefit. In a D-Class RX-7 I’m building adding the intercooler actually increases 0-60 times by like a 100th of a second and adds like 1 mph to my top speed, neither of which are very significant. I don’t think it even changes the PI. So is there some other reason to have one? Or perhaps the effects become more noticeable at higher PI’s?
Don’t look at the stats. That stuff doesn’t really matter. I’ve got stat queen cars that are absolute turds in every aspect on track.
Try the car with and without it. Odds are you won’t need it unless you really want a tad bit more speed to shave a lap time marginally. I’ve only seen some benefit with using it on Alps tunes for cars with limited build options.
And do have a look at the tuning experience thread from JimB, there’s a good example for using an intercooler for Indy Oval!
And BTW stats do help, have a look on the computed acceleration and top speed values, there are a good indication of the potential of the car provided good enough handling and proper tuning.
Personally I don’t look at stats or benchmark. I normally don’t use intercooler unless in a power build or on alps where the extra power is needed on certain cars. I will however try it occasionally and run the 2 cars on the half mile drag and 1 mile drag to see if there is a difference. If it’s very minimal I will choose the one without the intercooler 99% of the time because it weighs less.
Thanks guys, thats helpful. I don’t really look at the “general” stats. I was examining the simulated 0-60 times and what not.
Intercooler is not a “must have” part in real life, it is very beneficial, and MIGHT be needed in very warm atmosphere,
In Forza, I’d say use it only in when you are desperate for little bit more power on tracks where you need high HP but not huge amounts of acceleration. like Alps, Indy oval, LeMans both long layouts.
I personally use it more often to add weight and reduce 1pi to get the car in to desired class. Pretty often it would just end up being dead weight without any real benefit.
well most of you that answered are way farther up the LB than me so i should probably re think the reason i do use the sport intercooler. my reasoning is it gives a fairly significant boost in HP for very little PI. i suppose it’s because it adds weight and i generally only use them at lemans and the nordschleife to try and get as much top end as i can squeeze out in the long straights in my C and B class cars. i’ve helped it by upgrading the cam always and displacement when i can spare a few PI. i’m sure theres another way of doing it and ill figure it out eventually
Lose the Cam, it’s almost always 3rd most useless part in engine upgrades, after flywheel and intercooler just because it is very PI expensive. Unless you are going for indy Oval, or LeMans, where you need very high top speed and not much acceleration.
Almost always it ruins the original gearing, forcing you to get better transmission than you actually need just because the original gearing is much better suited for lower RPM engines.
The PI is much better spent on exhaust, airfilter, and pistonswhich will not only increase your power, but also reduces weight, and that will give you benfit on handling and braking.
Best part you can get to just about any engine is Centrifugal Supercharger conversion, just because it’s very cheap in PI.
losing the cam seems to be a popular choice. i probably should have mentioned that with the exception of 1 car, all my B class cars are muscle cars and since i wasnt given this nickname that i turned into my GT on accident you can probably guess which muscle cars they are. ill try it. while i never put someone elses tune on my car (other than for a little r&d) i am always open for suggestions. both my '71 cuda and my '69 charger are ok, but they aint great. i dont see myself sitting on top of any tracks LB in either of those cars but i want them to be as competitive as i’m able to drive them. thanks for your help
well, first trip around nurburgring, as in lap 1, knocked 10 seconds off my PB in my 69 charger. i gambled a little and ran with no aero since i was able to run race weight and race tires. it was a clean 8:16.3. unfortunately it was in tune mode so it doesnt count. and yeah i know, 8:16, but hey ill take it. it has more just not sure if the driver does. when i started playing racing games (atari 2600 pole position) and for years after that (Gran Turismo on the PS1) there was nothing but the AI to compare your tuning and driving ability against. it wasnt until FM4 that i actually went online to race even though i played and still have FM2 & 3. i’ll never forget that because thats when i learned that i wasnt near as good as i thought i was. and ive been working at it ever since. i refuse to run someone else’s tune in competition because thats the biggest thing i get from this game. tune it, retune it, change the build…im pretty sure i own every part available for several of my cars. but i’m not afraid to ask for advice especially from someone who is obviously better at it than me. so…thank you juggernaut. ive not shared the new build/tune yet because i think theres more in it but when i do ill post the name of it. feel free to take it for a run. i drive with a controller and run TCS. but would like to eventually tune the need for TCS out of it
C and /or B class, you don’t really need race tires, Rollcage is important, even though it adds weight, These old muscle cars have very soft chassis, which makes their handling rather unresponsive. Stiffening the chassis is very important. Race tires are overkill I would almost like to say that even sports tires are overkill, but you do want very wide tires.
Just to compare, I threw my B class charger which is actually 15 minute build & tune at nordschleife, Standing start, bunch of mistakes, 7.45.7 at test drive.
I’m rocking on 5.7 swap which is notably better than HEMI,

I myself are Mopar guy too and Duster is probably my favorite car, Charger being close 2nd and I absolutely hate how I have to swap that GM engine in to compete.
If you don’t want tunes, but would like to get some advice feel free to add me, and invite me when ever you see me online I usually don’t have anything going on so I can give you some advice how to set your car, There is lot to learn about tuning, and I can’t say that I would be expert on it, even though I have has advice from many who are better than me, and I have been tuning since Forza 2.
If ur a muscle fan like myself I have shared just about every one including dlc. They are crazy fast and if u try them and like them I will open source a couple of them for you
i have a couple of your tunes that i used for R&D. meaning i was trying to figure out how you made the charger and cuda as quick as you did. they are great tunes and i hope to come up with something equally fast or at least competitive. i hope you don’t take offense to that but tweaking this or that and seeing positive results is probably the thing i enjoy most about this game. i’m a horrible painter with no imagination and even less artistic ability but i still do all my own painting too. i’ve literally spent hours on a design just to delete the whole thing and paint the car black. i dont have a problem asking for pointers though. and as soon as i get this whole unable to join races thing straightened out i will definitely add you. i’m the guy who, for the last month, has been on here pitching a fit about not being able to join online races. i use the 5.7 too, mostly just to get that huge chunk of iron out of the front of my car. ive been toying with the cuda trying to keep it in there mostly because it can be built to make a crazy amount of torque in the B class. everything but my 70 challenger is in B class. i needed a C class car to do some career mode stuff and just left the challenger there. its too bad they dont offer the 6.4 hemi swap or the 440 with a 6 pack option which my old man swore to back in the day saying the hemi had too much torque and made the cars too front heavy causing the hemi cars to spin tires instead of hooking up and going.he wasn’t entirely wrong about that
I’ve got a build for a C class challenger that’ll still hit crazy fast times if you want it. The build can be used on the cuda as well but you’ll have to take a few miscellaneous parts off.
The tune is crap and never bothered to fix the front end but it’s literally one of the fastest accelerating muscle cars in C class. Handling can be interesting though.
Mopar I feel ur pain on painting… I do the same thing and when I give up i paint it black and tell the painter ERS PROPHETIK to make me a paint lol. By all means use any of my cars for R&D I was just offering to help u out with a couple open source ones that u can tweak on ur own or help getting your other muscle cars up to speed. Swerve can also build some nice and fast muscle cars so check his out as well.
C class if u want to try my 73 trans am it is an absolute monster… has gotten top page on a couple of tracks just not in my hands since I don’t leaderboard much at all. I will open that one up for u also as well if u want it sometime. Again use it as R&D and go from there.
thanks ers johnson. i may take you up on the open source sometime. just a little peek. ive been messing around with the 69 charger and 71 cuda leaving the hemi in, i actually ran PB’s on the nurburgring and sebring. in case you havent figured it out i test all cars on the nurb. if you can set a car up to run there you should be able to set it up for all tracks. that and i just love the track. to be honest i think both of those cars are better than im capable of driving them.
