Am I doomed to be a poor driver?

I’ve been playing Forza 5 and Horizon 2 exclusively for almost a year now.
I still can’t drive very well.
I have all assists off except I use automatic shifting.
I try driving the same course/track repeatedly, day after day, and I can’t consistently get a line.
I don’t know when I should trail brake, accelerate and modify my throttle with the brake, or coast around a corner.
I’m sure that is track specific, but I can’t figure out when to use each method. Or if I should at all.
I know when I was using manual shifting, I could use the engine shift down to “engine brake.”
Too many variables and I got confused.
I never know what is coming next; Each turn is like a brand new experience.
Am I doomed to always be middle of the pack?
Thanks.

What you could try is find a friend whose faster than you, both use the same car, they run a fast lap at a track you then race them in a rival challenge, that way you will follow their ghost and if they are a good friend they may run in automatic mode so you both same car. same tune, same driving aids and you can see where they pull away from you. Hope that makes sense.

It makes sense. Now to find a friend…

I improved my “skills” through rivals, setting a time and taking the next friend to beat. Beaten him—>next friend…and so on. So you learn to “read” the track and you figure out the shortcuts and a fast line. Step by step you’ll get more confident and faster.
And-i have a friend in my FL,using automatic and driving aids, and he is top ten on any track he tries. (Horizon 2)
Good luck and enjoy racing!

i got better driver by learning the car first, when you learn limits of your car, you can concentrate to the track better. Cut story short of my learning how to compete days. =D

Peace and Happy New year for ye all!

Thanks for the advice, Kaine FIN.

U don’t have to turn off all the assist at once I didn’t switch to manual w/clutch for a year. I mostly played off line in f3 and 4 . I slowly adjusted to not using assist.

Thank you for the reply, A11eyesONME23.
I turned each one of slowly, it took a few months between each until I was comfortable to try the next one.

Feel free to add me and I do not mind running some tracks to provide a ghost and we can take it from there.

Thanks HandheldBee9, I’ll take you up on that offer when the New Years festivities die down

Hey meow!

i will try to give some advices:

  • no one learns to drive in a couple of weeks… it’s necessary to play a lot and take some risks in the races to try to be faster
  • change the simulation driving to normal: each one is different… play and see the differences
  • braking line is a great assist and allows you antecipate where to tap the brakes and hit the apex as fast as possible.
  • a good setup in the car is also important: try to find some good tuners and you wil know that for sure if you find a tune for a car from him/her you will not get any surprise
  • attack mode when racing… don’t be afraid to take some risks and gain some positions when racing… nice guys finish last!
  • when playing rivals, try to get a rival around 1-2 seconds faster than you to check their lines and try to beat them… improving 2 sec on our best times is a huge personal progress.
  • it’s easy to play in horizon because there are no dirt laps, so don’t feel bad for using rewind lots of time… it’s important to lear how to attack a curve, a jump, pass a drivatar and so on
  • slowers cars are easier to drive

I don’t mind to help you on this too, just pick a car, track or something and i don’t have any problem to play with automatic gears to help you to get on the leaderboards!

Same here. Feel free to add me.

Thanks HLR AlphaDog!
Everyone has been so nice. Thanks!

The Smurf is the guy with using automatic and being very fast i mentioned… great driver, hard rival!

this video will show you the fundamentals of conering. Please try and watch all of the driving school tutorials, very useful information. Hope they help.

This is my favorite video on youtube. I get chills watching this. The title speaks for itself; “how ayrton senna was so fast”.

First of all, what are your controller deadzones set at? Controller deadzones can certainly be a hindrance depending on your driving style. If they are still stock, they condense your throttle and brake control to about 80% trigger movement, which makes the throttle and brake even more sensitive then they already are. In the past year or so I’ve been subtly learning and perfecting the art of trail braking. If you’d like to add me go ahead. For the XB1 the only games I own are FM5 and FH2, so chances are if I’m online then I’m on Forza. I’d like to be of any assistance I can. If you think you can utilize the braking line without it becoming a crutch (like it has for me) I’d give that a try. the line tends to fade from red to yellow, letting you know when you should lift or when you can roll back onto the throttle. Just be careful with it, as I said over time it can become a crutch and it’s a hard habit to kick.

I’ve had them set to 0% and 100% for about 6 months now. I have the driving line off completely. Thanks for the reply STANMAN911.

Thanks for the video links xSpeedLess I’ll watch them over and over.

I’ll add you as a friend GhettoSmurf ZA and ghost you for a while. Thanks!

I’ll look for The Smurf. Thanks DAGnoFEAR.
