AI in Oval Racing needs serious work

Wow, do we have a problem here.

I haven’t done any oval racing in FM till now (seriously not a fan of the genre) but with Daytona released I thought I’d check it out.

Jumped in the Whistler Mustang and setup a quick 8 lap race around the oval, on level 8 difficulty.

Straight away the AI do their usual thing where they trip over each other, braking all over the place so they don’t run into each other and driving off track, such that by the first turn, I’m in first place…

By lap 2 I am lapping the last cars (who were taking themselves off track)

By lap 4 I am lapping cars on pace alone

By the end of the race I have lapped down to 6th place

As I catch and lap them, they are driving so slow, timid, and braking on straights or dragging their brakes rather than manoeuvring to actually overtake each other.

I’m no fan of oval racing and I don’t know anything about the style of driving it requires (I’m told there’s more to it than just keeping your foot flat, lifting and turning left) but it very much seems to me that the AI need to be programmed to drive significantly differently to how they do on circuits, acknowledging that needs heaps of work too.

Just did a couple more at Miami and Indy to make sure.

On these occasions 1st and 2nd got away and drive quickly as normal, but everyone else continued tondrive terribly and were easy to pass.

No lapping this time though. Seems my first go at Daytona was symptomatic of the AI “giving up” once you get into 1st place

This has been an issue ever since they brought ovals into the game. I honestly dont get what they do with AI, year after year its the same old rubbish.

I race the ovals as well, turn the number of ai down to about 15 difficulty on 6 and there still just as bad also they are terrible comming out of the pits and darting onto the track abrubtly instead of staying on the shoulder and gently merging in.Also an issue when the ai is driving your vehicle out of the pits.

Yes, there is much more but it is not possible to depict it with FM.

Yes it sure does. It takes much better AI though or a bunch of good racers in a private room.

Hi, welcome to Forza Motorsport. With innovative AI and reworked from the ground up gameplay, we promise a realistic, challenging simulation experience that will leave you wanting more… By more, they mean wanting better, because the AI is garbage.

I wish real tire strategy was possible in this game, with the possibility to just take left or right tires, and be limited to a certain amount of sets per race. Oh well.
