Advice needed for VW Type 3 tune

I did a quick tune for the new VeeDub this evening and I’ve done something horribly wrong but I can’t figure out what.

It accelerates, brakes and turns fine, but the nose wanders all over the place in a straight line. Or what would be a straight line if it wasn’t moving around like a truffle pig.

Tires are at 27psi, camber’s about -2 front and rear, I’ve got 0.1 toe in front and rear (orignally just rear), springs are up at ~1k, dampers stiffened on to about 10 on rebound, 2.5 soft on bump, and I haven’t touched the sway bars from whatever the homologation setting is.

I’ve tuned plenty of rear engined cars before with satisfying results. I’ve never encountered spooky handling like this before. Suggestions?

Oh man, I just posted a similar thing about the wandering VW, but with other cars as well. What is your ride height set to? I found that the VW is stable enough if you keep them above 7.5. I’m not a tuner so I’d wait for a better opinion though.

This issue has been around for a LONG time…it impacts the VW Beetle, Datsun, and several other cars. One of the primary go-to things folks have done is to keep default or higher (and/or raise to your satisfaction) the ride height.

Check this thread out…back in FM5… HERE

BTW, I ran a quick test on it. Built it with 157 HP, primarily grip and ran out at Maple Valley Short for #27 WW (46.657). So the car can be competitive! I used RH @ 7.9/8.6

Thanks Jedi & PRKid. I had it slammed, and raised the ride height as one of my fixes. I’ll go back to stock heights and work down incrementally.

also you have your toe at .1 put this down to 0 or even a negative number if the front is too responsive.

Sorry, to be clear, the problem was there with an original toe setting of 0, I adjusted it to .1 toe in (-ve toe) and the problem was still there. I’ve yet to try putting the ride height back up, but if it’s a known issue that may solve the problem.

also increasing caster should stop this problem as well.

I believe going in the positive direction for front toe should only compound your problem not make it better. Serious try gonig -.5 front and see what happens.

For non aero build wandering stops for me with ride height 6.0/7.0.

This is with alignment -0.9/-0.7, 0/-0.1, 6 for stock tires.

You will be faster with minimum ride height though.

During my “quick” test of lowering/raising the ride height, I was able to go faster than my ghost for section of the lap, however, due to the veering off and inconsistency, the overall lap was not faster!
