24HR FORZATHON SHOP - Dec 30th & Jan 1-6th

I’m sorry they didn’t plan out their shop drops to suit your schedule. I’m sure they’ll reach out and consult you on any future shop content.

Don’t pretend it’s good game design or make excuses for it, or try and turn it on me as some failing as a consumer.

Unless you’re playing the game every day without fail: you wouldn’t know the store changed for a day.
Unless a customer visited the forum: they wouldn’t know in advance about the ‘drops’.
Unless a customer visited the forum and read the right thread: they wouldn’t know in advance about the drops.
Unless a customer visited the forum on the right day and read the right thread: they wouldn’t know in advance about the drops.

It’s poorly thought out and doesn’t encourage participation in the game, it just puts people off-side who miss them.
There’s no “good” spin to this.

Do you say the same if you happen to miss out on doing one week of the seasonals and don’t get cars on offer?

As i said in another post, all these cars in the 24 hour Forzashop are available in the Autoshow and Auction House, go buy them if you want one so bad.

No I haven’t said the same about the seasonal weeks. And I’ve missed a few of those from being busy and/or forgetful over the years.
A week is a relatively long time to ensure most dedicated players get a crack at it. If I don’t log in/complete things in a week I’m totally happy to accept that’s on me.
Hence my casually overlooked constructive criticism that perhaps these ‘specials’ could be run through the full week rather than just a 24 hour period.

A flash 24 hour window during some of the most dense social days of the year notified to players only through a forum post though?
Sorry, that’s not on consumers, it’s hilarious that anyone would suggest it is.

And sure, you’re right that the cars are available for purchase (though that’s hardly the point). Point to me where I can purchase the exclusive clothing items?

If the question is “why is the 24 hour sale a good thing” the answers so far have been “sorry it’s not tailored to your schedule”, “they’ve been doing this for years”, “stop playing the game”, “go buy the cars”. Note none of those answers explain why this 24 hour sale idea of exclusives (be it a FE car or a clothing item) is a good thing, just turns it around and makes it an issue with the player. Which is not cool.

I agree with you, I also am not fond of the 600 point car going down to 300 the next day.

Ok then, how about PG don’t do the Forzashop surprises on holiday periods. Would that suit some of you?

When would you like them to do these events? When it suits your calendar maybe? I mean seriously…

Some of us prefer games that don’t need to resort to cheap FOMO tactics and other crappy tropes to keep their servers populated. I remember back in the days when I would play a game almost daily… because it was a solid product and… heaven forbid… fun.

Time gating content into a tiny window of opportunity with no guarantee of reoccurrence is a sign of desperation.

"no guarantee of reoccurrence is a sign of desperation. " They have been doing this for years now, if you and the other people who complain about it don’t know this by now, then thats on you and no one else.

Some of us prefer games that don’t need to resort to cheap FOMO tactics” If you and others hate the game so much why do you insist on playing it then?

All those cars are available in the Autoshow and Auction House so it’s not like you don’t have other opportunities to get those cars.

and… heaven forbid… fun.” Once again, why do you insist on playing it if it isn’t “fun”.

And the fact there are gamers that justify these psychological manipulations developers are intentionally building into their game as a crutch to boost engagement is exactly why the trope has jumped the gap from clear manipulation mobile gaming into the AAA console space that never needed this tactic in the past.

I never stated my position on whether FH5 is fun or not… that’s your projection and ultimately irrelevant to the discussion. It is possible that FH5 has some fun elements, yet the developers insist on including FOMO manipulation tactics. These are not mutually exclusive. Both facts can be true at the same time.

However, everyone out there can make their own mind up on what the developers actually feel about the “fun” factor of their product… when much of their game relies upon FOMO to drive engagement.

Considering we NOW just learned the original “time-limited” nature of the shop items in the OP of this very thread suggested weren’t time-locked to that 24 hour period at all. This could have been HONESTLY disclosed on day 1… so gamers who wanted the content, but lacked the FP to purchase them right then didn’t feel the pressure to play exclusively on Thursday when they in reality still had 7 days they can plan their life around.

These developers know the research behind this and yet they choose to manipulate it as a key part of their business model. There’s nothing wrong with calling it out.

It’s sad… to see games that could stand alone on the strengths of their gameplay insist so intently to adopt the worst trends in gaming.

Who said anything about cars. Again you are reverting to straw-man logic fallacies here. Two of the items in the warning in the OP are time-gated cosmetics that are not obtainable by any other method. Those with experience with FH4 know there is no guarantee time-gated seasonal content will be offered in the e-shop or challenges the same season the following calendar year. There are multiple examples of content in FH4 that were one-and-done releases. It is perfectly ok for gamers to be concerned that content that states it “may” be offered as a seasonal reward in the future… will never actually come up in the rotation. Or content supposedly in wheelspins not actually be in the loot drop tables.

Not really the point… Or any of your business.

The developer CHOOSE this business model. The players choose whether to support it. I choose to point out the manipulation tactics these games adopt to inform consumers and spend my leisure time accordingly. you do you.

However, I hold developers especially in low regard when they expect their customers to jump through hoops to accomplish rote tasks in the middle of holiday periods or time-gated windows of their CHOOSING… Yet when such content turns out to be unobtainable due to clear MANUFACTURING DEFECTS in their game not hold themselves to the same standard they place on their customers. developers want a well-earned holiday break… don’t release buggy time-limited content over that same holiday.

How about respecting your customer base’s diversity and varying levels of personal and professional obligations which is 99% driven by one’s economic circumstance? In a time where game companies go all out to preach why they are such industry leaders in their diversity and inclusion efforts yet fall flat on their faces with these tactics. It’s a self-inflicted wound… only to fit in and to make sure they mark the same feature check boxes Fortnight did.

To me Forza Horizon today feels like playing a Pokémon game in which every new car was a Mew. You know, that elusive 151st Pokémon which you could only get by going to shopping malls when Nintendo held events. Except back in the day at least there was the community aspect of meeting like minded people and possibly having a good time.

Mew was significant because it was a really good Pokémon which could learn all the best moves. On the other hand, the vast majority of exclusive cars in Forza Horizon are worthless. The Peels being the worst, as Forza’s Metapods.

So the only real draw is to complete your ForzaDex by not missing out on cars which you could easily acquire in past games, like the 575M.

I agree with the above sentiments about this driving further FOMO. I also question if the people defending such practices have financial stake in the company or something.

Anyways, wouldn’t the easiest middle ground be an in game notification? Even if they just send a message to the in-game message center saying “Get these cars in the Forzathon shop for 24 hours only!” That would at least let most players know that it’s happening and I can’t imagine it would take that long to do.
