Windows not releasing 90GB disk space after Forza 7 uninstall from C: drive

Officially tearing my hair out now.

I bought Forza 7 last week, and have still not even seen it running once.

Today, with the latest patch release, the download kept crashing, and telling me I needed to free up space on my hard drive…I had plenty.

I decided to uninstall Forza 7 and do a clean download (4th time in as many days), however now when I look at my C: drive, the free space is exactly the same as when Forza was installed (58 GB)…it should be around 150 GB by my reckoning.

It appears, even though I have uninstalled it, the hard drive space has not been released.

Any idea? - I’ve tried running the Microsoft Apps Diagnostic Tool and running WSReset.exe

Thanks for any help,

Andy

I noticed something not right about my hard drive space as well. I run 500GB solid state so not a ton of room to add games. I was sure I had plenty to install Forza 7 though. After most the day downloading it, i paused it and noticed i was out of space. Something weird happened though because I had Forza 7 icons and was able to start it up but the install was not finished. I ended up deleting some other games and finishing the install but something did not feel right. I started right mouse clicking on all my root folders and checking properties for folder size to narrow down which folder was taking up so much space I was unaware of. After 20min of doing that I realised I had to many folders so I found a free microsoft store app called “TreeSize Free” and downloaded it.

I quickly found that it looks like Forza 7 installed twice under the "c:\program files\windowsapps" hidden folder. Both folders are using 95.6GB of space but if you look at the Last Modified date of the folder, only one of them has been used today and the other was used 3 days ago. I played Forza 7 yesterday and I opened it up for a bit today so my guess is the other one can be deleted? I checked my “add or remove programs” list and Forza 7 is only listed once. It appears I would have to delete this folder manually if I want to free the space up. However, im worried if I do that I will lose the game and have to re-download. I am already over my monthly GB bandwidth limit too this month :frowning:

Screenshot of both 95.6GB folders

I opened Forza 7 right after I posted and noticed the entro/splash press enter to start screen shows “Ver. 1.111.7523.2” at the bottom left. Being that is the same # of the first folder that has been last modified as of today, I assume the game downloaded two different versions of itself when I first purchased and installed this past Friday 11/25. j

I got bold (and impatient) and I went ahead and tried to right click delete the other folder with 1.110.6886.2 in the folder name but it states “You require permission from SYSTEM to make changes to this folder.” I am an administrator on my gaming PC. I am sure I could override the folders author from “SYSTEM” to my username and then delete, and I will if others suggest thats what I need to do. I would first like to hear if anyone else has two instances of the game and how they resolved it though?

I had this problem before when i reinstalled my PC and downloaded both FH3 and FM7. I could not find a solution, however when i removed FH3 to free up space for the FM7 reinstall, both games got deleted somehow and freed up my ssd space. It was pretty weird, it doesn’t help that everything is locked or encrypted, so its hard or near impossible to delete the folder.

Here and there i read that if you download FM7 again it should remove the older files, but i guess in your case it did not. Hope you can find a solution, SSD space aint cheap!

had the same issue, it flabbergasted me. How could a PC game be this hard to remove??? The folder is located in:"c:\program files\windowsapps" hidden folder. i had to download Treesize (free version) so that I could empy the folder. its a real hassle:(

Can anyone tell me how to delete the files, I’ve uninstalled the game but it won’t release the SSD space? I’ve downloaded Treesize but even do I can see the folders I can’t delete them because according to Windows I don’t have permission.

Thanks for all the helpful replies - I have no idea what changed, but I fired my PC up yesterday, HD size was still the same, however Windows Store told me Forza 7 was now installed! - it was’nt the night before, and my PC had been switched off, so no way it could have downloaded overnight??

Any way…its working for me now, I’m really enjoying it, and this from a Project CARS 2 Assetto Corsa sim racer

Lets hope Turn 10/Microsoft get these issues sorted out, and keep patching/supporting the game.

Cheers

Andy

Glad to hear your issue is resolved studsr.

Unfortunately, I still show two versions of Forza 7 installed on my PC and I can not manually delete the older v1.110.6886.2.

I have a monthly 250GB internet bandwidth limit imposed by Suddenlink and Forza 7 is 95GB. This game may have just caused me some internet overage fees. Uninstalling and downloading 95GB again after I have already downloaded the game twice (nearly 200GB) is not really that good of an answer for me. Does anyone know a proper way to uninstall the old version?

Bump. Anyone else have this issue?

Today I log in and now I have 1 copy of Forza 7 on my drive thats version 1.113. It seems the update removed the bad copy as well. Forza must have known about this issue and fixed it.
