Now before anyone says yes I know FH4 is not optimised for Wheels like (project Cars 2 etc) but no matter what I try anything not on tarmac I just can’t get anywhere near the time I post on a pad when I use the wheel! When I lose it on a pad I can seem to fix Mx 9/10 times and keep going however with a wheel it’s more like 1/10 times I can save the situation!! Any thoughts?? Is it just the way the game is that a pad will always be a little bit easier to control? TBH I use the wheel in FH4 mostly for immersion so it’s not a serious issue I was just interested in people’s thoughts.
Agreed, the wheel support is nice for cruising, but its terrible for me if I want to win a race that I don’t want to have to repeat a half dozen times. The faster the cars and the harder the AI setting, the more twitch-responsiveness with your thumbs is not just expected but seemingly required. Love the wheel support, but I don’t use it for achieving things in the game and I’d never use it as my only control option.
You can cheat a bit and set the wheel to 270 degree rotation but in the end then you’re trying to turn the game into an Outrun cabinet, just feels off to me, so I stick with the controller when I’m not just cruising around passing time.
Setting it to 270 degrees wouldn’t work, you simply get different physics with a wheel. See my thread on wheel vs keyboard where I tried a dirt speed zone using the keyboard and immediately went much faster than I can with the wheel. It’s not about how fast you can turn the wheel, the car is simply much more stable, settled and predictable when using the keyboard, and I’d guess with the controller as well, based on the dirt times I have recorded in my spreadsheet from when I used a controller. You don’t need to correct with the other input methods, the car just doesn’t get unsettled by the terrain like it does when you’re using a wheel.
I really love using a wheel with FH4. I realize it puts me at a bit of a disadvantage but it is still a great deal of fun!
Ah, I haven’t messed with it much… i have set the wheel to 270 just to see if it was more like the old MS 360 wheel, and it was, sorta, but I didn’t leave it set that way, it was more of an experiment. I stand corrected.
On the official wheel support page where they talk about what all the settings do they do say in the fine print that all assists are disabled when using a wheel. I think the only setting that remains “on” is the Simulation vs. Normal steering setting which I’ve learned not to mess with, even with a wheel and even on older Forza titles.
So yeah, using a wheel is harder than just 'getting more degrees of control" out of a more analog controller, there are clearly more fundamental things happening in the game engine when you plug in the wheels. If you can do competitive racing with a wheel on Simulation steering, you’re a Jedi.
What you’re experiencing is because of this: Forza games are built around a pad. It’s an Xbox seller and will likely always be optimized for pad first.
A game like AC, however, works just as well on the pad as it does on a wheel, interestingly. You have to experiment generously though to find your own groove (pad).
Agree, currently play all three including WRC8 with the Xpad. WRC8 and PC2 are the hardest at the moment in terms of controller setup, where else AC its quite good. JSR Devon just released a video on playing with a Xpad for ACC. It has a slightly complicated setup.
Pad? rofl. Dude, better than any gamepad, just use keyboard… gamepads are horrible for real gaming.
That would be a HUGE no. I’ve been on a gamepad since “The Need for Speed” popped up on the PS1 and have been using it since then. I’m on X-One-X and play all my racing games on a pad: PCARS2, AC, Forza, WRC, DR, etc.
No complaints at all. If you learn to use the pad with finesse and train your thumb with a ‘mind to muscle’ connection, you can use it like a wheel and make corrections rather than flicking it or twiddling your thumb which is what I imagine majority of people do on a pad.
I don’t have that problem, and the pad gives me all the feedback I need to pilot my car. Heck, I’ll show you a few replays of mine - and you cannot tell if I’m using a pad or wheel!
