The Volvo 850 in the BTCC was not a T5, T5-R or an R for that matter, they were all based on the 2 liter ( Swedish and Italy only base models )
Turbos were banned in Super Touring and all cars had to use 2 liter naturally aspirated engines and around 300 hp, so Volvo used the 2 liter n/a base engine with a 20 valve head from the Italian domestic market model.
Italy got a 2 liter 140 hp model instead of the 2.5 liter 144 hp version due to the Italian tax laws that favoured cars with engines smaller than 2 liters.
Also the 850 raced in the BTCC between 1994 ( with the wagon ) and 1995 & 96 with the saloon version.
It was replaced by the smaller S40 in the BTCC in 1997 which raced between 1997 and 1999, but with the same engine as the 850.
