On a surface, this compact car may look extremely boring and soulless, but it was significant model for Volvo as it started FWD era if this safety-focused brand.
Believe it or not, but 400 Series was Volvo’s only car with pop-up headlamps.
Over the years, it was available with 3 different engines. 1.7 NA I4, 1.7 Turbo I4, and 2.0 NA I4.
As you would expect, Turbo was the most powerful model as it was making a healthy 120 hp.
Fun fact: 1.7 without catalytic convertor had just 1 less hp than later 2 litre engine (109 vs. 110 hp).
All engines, except early 1.7 NA, had catalytic convertor.
All 3 engines could be paired either to Renault-supplied 5 speed manual or ZF-made 4 speed automatic gearbox. It was only available with FWD drivetrain.
As you can imagine, version I’m requesting is 1.7 Turbo with 5 speed manual transmission.
