Is it important to upgrade the tires on offroad vehicles? My real life experience tells me that semi-slick tires are the terrible for handling on wet and/or loose surfaces, but since Horizon 2 has no offroad or rally tires (as its predecessor did) I don’t know what to keep on my cars. Any recommendations?
Depends on what class you want the car to be in? You can leave stock tires and make a good tune for the off road portions and be just fine. I also have cars with race tires and they do fine off road as well. I don’t think the game cares too much between the compounds and road surface as much as Motorsport.

I see. I’m trying to make a bespoke offroad Bowler EXR S tune that allows me to stay just within or at max for S1 while getting the most power i can out of it. In the process I noticed just how much of a cars class rating is dominated by its tire compound even tho i find that the compound never makes any difference offroad. So i figured that leaving upgraded tires off would leave me room for more power. Now that i know for sure i will definitely leave them off and try it in a few cross country events. Thanks for the advice! 
Glad I could help. I’ve only put on tires in two situations:
- I need the tire upgrade to get to the class I want to be in - lower class cars that I want to put into the S classes and either cannot, or do not want to do an engine swap to a different motor.
- The car has so much torque, either stock or with my upgrades, that the tires I have cannot handle it and it makes for a bad build. Then I add tires and accept that I need the car to be in a higher class.
Upgraded tires do make the car grip better both on and off-road, if your tire upgrade increases your lateral G’s by 0.10, you’ll see that improvement both on and off the road.
Now, do you need to upgrade your grip to begin with (on or off-road)? For the most part, no.
