“Having actually heard the 488 at the Fiorano track and on the streets of Maranello I can tell you it does not IMHO sound “better” than the 458 or Speciale, both of which I have or do own. It does not sound bad and in fact is the best sounding turbo I have heard but it does not reach an enthusiast level of aural appreciation. It is a lower and “meatier” sound that cuts out quickly with up shifts and has a nice rev down shift sound. The turbo whistle is readily apparent. The volume is much lower than the 458. Even my wife who has little interest in such things made a simple statement “Huh, it really doesn’t sound as good as yours, I always know when you are leaving and returning home. I am not too sure you would like that one…” As I have said it does not sound bad and is, like it or not, the future and feel Ferrari has done the best it could at the moment. I am a growing fan of the 488 Spider and hope to order soon but won’t be buying it for how it sounds.
By the way I should have said second best turbo I have heard the AMG GTs F1 Safety Car has a MONSTER note but I assume it is modified.”
So the 488 has a quieter sound IRL which Forza seems to replicate. However, it sounds a little weak on the downshifts and the turbo sound is not that audible. Can you guys possibly update the sound and make it closer to the real-life 488 with a content update?
Edit: this came off as rude I think. Didn’t intend that.
The cost and man hours that would go into essentially a minor tweak I don’t think is worth the time. It’s really only something that the vast vast minority would pick up on.
Just like the Laf and P1 which sounded fine in F5 but are off now.
Many sounds have been done very well, but it does not translate across the board well. That irks me. And many of the V8s V10s and V12s can sound generic. There are even different manufacturer cars in the game that sound eerily similar to each other. Each and every car should boast its own unique audio character, both stock and upgraded.
I have stopped doing engine swaps altogether because they sound about the same in every car. The tradition of unique sounds was carried forward well between F2 and 4. Minus 3, because that had weak car sounds and no change after upgrades. I’d say F4 is the pinnacle to this day.
They ought to take sound more seriously and build on the strengths of the “good old days”.
I understand. I noticed an error on the Bentley gt3. Forza car has vents in center of dash when the real race car didn’t. https://goo.gl/photos/yLzZeYTkdYvEKqMp6
Is it worth the fix? No.
Is it going to bother me? Yes.
I think it’s these ‘everyday bugs’ that the developers seem to not want to give any attention to.
I.e. the Esprit V8’s headlights still point funny on the road, you can only see 5-10 feet in front of the car. The Evo X’s turbo glitch hasn’t been fixed. On almost every car with only tints or “liveried tints”, you will see a bug where the windows are completely transparent when viewed from the inside - not the cockpit but all external views.
I’ve been after them for dear life to fix the LaFerrari’s sound from the first-person views and introduce that ferocious snarl that’s in the real car and quite nicely done in F5. Same goes for the P1’s engine and exhaust sound - it’s a visceral, beastly sound IRL, though nowhere as shrill or snarly as the LaF, but they ditched the F5 sound, which was perfect IMO, it only lacked a proper turbo sound, which still hasn’t been recreated properly I might add.
I am willing to accept even 50 cars on launch, provided they put in the manpower, sweat and passion into replicating each car sound like they beautifully did in F4 and 5.
Turbo engines will always sound quieter, all things being equal. You’re taking a lot of energy out of the flow of exhausts gasses sticking a great big turbine in the way of them. Basic physics.
I’m not sure what people thought the 488 would sound like in real life, but it’s quite good in the game. It’s still a road car as well, so it has catalytic converters. As soon as you rip them off any car it will sound a lot louder. That same thing about removing energy, or restricting the flow, which they do very well. Exhaust upgrades in the game don’t really specify removing them, but they do usually change the volume a bit from what I can tell on most road legal cat equipped cars in the game.
That’s good to know - I am already familiar with all this, though I appreciate you taking the trouble.
I do not have reservations about the 488’s sound IRL - it is a sound you grow to like as long as you convince yourself there is no 458! What I do have reservations with is the game’s replication of the 488 among many other cars. They need to sound real as opposed to “pseudo engine sounds” or digitally reproduced engine sounds which ‘attempt’ to mimic the actual car. Furthermore, applying full upgrades to cars, not just the 488, hardly has any change on the engine audio character. This was a glaring issue in FM3 as well.
I will again go on record to mention F4 and 5 as a benchmark, and continue to build on audio from there. Competition is about to get fierce and one can only sit on their laurels for so long. I say don’t have such a huge car roster if their true car sounds cannot be replicated 100% with and without upgrades. And you can’t blame me either, along with many other fans - we have been spoiled rotten by the likes of F4 and 5 sound, and 6 falls short.
However, I will give them props for improving the sound balance and individually improving certain car sounds, though there are many more cars that are in dire need of sound improvements. F40, Laf, P1, F-type, SLS etc.
