The cars need more grip

I play a lot of racing games on both consoles. The handling in Forza 6 is just off. Way to much sliding around. It’s unrealistic. Project Cars, F1 2015 , Drive Club , Even Forza Horizon 2 all have a much better handling model. At times in Forza 6 I feel like I’m driving on ice. Really needs to be fixed.

I would say that in terms of tyre physics, the way road tyres are represented in FM6 is probably the most realistic representation of road tyres in any game to date, they are very very good.

Slicks though?, yeah, they are bad.

Project cars does a much better job of simulating slicks, and Driveclub?, Driveclub maybe be many things, but realistic it’s not, it’s far, far from it.

Tires do not seem to be done all that well in Forza actually, For one thing tire pressure and temperature have very little to do with the handling in FM6. I have ran several tests using different PSI settings and the effect is very minimal. In Project cars the PSI has a much greater and much more realistic effect. Tire temps also have greater impact in PCars and you can get the temps to change by simply changing the PSI of the tire, also that temp will vary based on time of day and air temp and track temp in PCars. In FM6 I have saw very little if any temp change under different conditions. Daytona Day and Night both run the tire temps the same. The temps stay the same there ont he Indy car if the PSI is 30, 40 or even 55 I saw no difference at all in FM6. In PCars the difference would be very noticeable as it would in real life.

As for grip levels I don;t think the grip levels in general are off that much but it does seem that most cars in the game have more front grip than rear and oversteer is an issue with almost every car, it does at times make it feel as though the rear tires are on ice or that you have sticky tires on the front and hard ones on the rear. The grip levels also change very little with PSI changes in the tires where this should have more of an effect than it does for sure.

You are joking right? You know Project Cars is just Shift 2 reskinned with the fan patches installed and some tweaks made. Its incredibly buggy and will never be fixed. Tis whole topic is nonsense.

I didnt know that…
Explain a lot actually…

just don;t listen to this guy. He is totally misinformed…yes, PCars has bugs but it has nothing to do with Shift2…the physics, not only tires, are way better than Forza…but what does better mean? in this case, it is more fun and rewarding to drive in Pcars than Forza. It is just like the tires in Forza are always cold and will never heat up.

No I am not joking. I played Shift 2 or at least tried to. It was not good at all. The FFB was horrible, the worst of any game I have ever played. Project cars on the other hand is more like GTR2 which was very good and Project cars has the best FFB of any game I have played to date as well as more realistic tuning and driving the closest game to it that I have played would be GTR2 and possible GT Ledgends which were also done by the same guys but without the EA influence on them. EA has not made a decent racing game since Porsche Unleashed at that was 15 years ago.

Yes I know PCars is buggy on the XBox but I did nto buy it for the XBox. I knew the PC version would be the best and that is the version I bought. It is great and I have experienced no major issues with it at all and as an added bonus I get to use my Forza CSR Elite wheel to drive PCars where as I can’t use it to play Forza 5 or 6.

To say that any version of Forza to date has better physics than PCars just shows that the person making the statement does not know anything about how real cars and real tuning behave.

Don’t want to derail but there isn’t a single piece of physics code carried over from Shift 2. Straight from SMS. Don’t go spouting things that aren’t true.

I was talking about how the tyres feel driving, rather than how they react to temperature and pressure, I don’t think there is a game out there that does temp or pressure well, even PCars temp is off, their cold tyres are way less grippy than you’d get IRL.

Personally, I don’t think there is much use in changing the pressures in FM6 from the default, the differences are so minimal.

Agreed, when you update a car to racing tires, they simply are not true racing tires. But its a game and I think overall the tires are ok. What bugs me is the fact that game pad users seem to have less issues with car sliding than wheel users"

Im a wheel user, and I have 0 issues with cars sliding around.

I am a wheel user too (TX)!

I agree with Ialyrn, and really RMKiop, and Donowat too… Mostly!

I don’t quite have my “Sliding around” issues quite down to Zero… But the few issues I still have are all mine… LOL… Not FM6’s

I do agree that the tire Physics are fantastic in FM6, but can’t debate the Race tire question… I often use street tires in order to reserve PI for acceleration upgrades… That requires really careful braking and acceleration inputs though…

I was also asking that same question regarding “game pads having less issues” for a long time too! Frustrated me a lot. Not as much anymore though!

I just did a huge post about Wheel vs. Gamepad (Controller) — #416 Posted : about 2 hours ago — Steering Wheel and You…

Take a look! Ialyrn, and some others have some great stuff in that thread too!

Don’t forget the mod cards. I have some for +12% grip. The game might not be perfect, but the physics and car handling with a controller are fantastic.

It’s like Alan from Team VVV said, in Forza 6, it feels like you are constantly driving on ice cold tires that just won’t heat up, no matter what the telemetry says. When you have 295 sections slicks at the back, after a couple of laps those things should stick to the tarmac like you don’t have enough power.

I’ve always wondered about this.

I’m not going to pretend that I know anything about it from experience (I’m 26 and drive a 2004 Civic with 115,000 miles - safe to say I’ve never been to a track a day in my life), but I always wondered if the physics in the FM series favored less grip when compared to how the cars would behave IRL. I grew up playing Gran Turismo and when I switched to Forza I noticed that the cars seemed gripper on GT by a longshot with all assists off on both titles.

Having no real life experience, I can’t comment as to which is more accurate but I will say I enjoy the challenge that Forza brings. You have to be much more precise in order to get the best lap times.

RoadHog & Dano, you guys bring up some good points.

I’ve also done some test trials using IndyCars in FM5 to see the effect of different tire pressures on temperature and laptimes and got same laptimes & temperatures (15psi > 50 psi). That clearly cannot be right.

Dan Greenawalt has mentioned that FM6 now takes tire deformation into account which surprised me because FM5 graphically shows the tire deformation but apparently the physics did not include it. So I’m assuming FM6 include tire deformation = the effect of ride quality should be noticeable.

Not sure if it is my anticipation of the tire pressure difference or not but I do feel the tire stiffness. At 25 psi set pressure the ride feels supple but at 28 psi the car feels much more tighter. The pressure still seem to have no effect on hot tire pressure (disappointing).

The tire grip, I’m guessing, is based on tire temperature (which seem to plateau at some point). The tire temperature almost always tops out after couple of laps EXCEPT in one car, '67 Lotus Type 49 with stock tires. This car’s tires always drop in temperature and stabilize at about 170 deg F no matter how I drive it. Suffice to say, it is a difficult car to push.

I can’t say for other games but as far as this game is concerned and me having real life track experience I feel it does a great job modeling grip through corners. I only have a 350hp car and if I go into a turn hot on cold tires with my sway bar settings I will quickly lose the back end and have it come around on me. Once they warm up its a little bit better but I can still cause the rear end to swing out on some decent performance tires with a 275 width. It’s all about tuning the car and understanding the limits. My car is a g37 and stock that thing understeer like crazy and inspires no real confidence in turns at all. I feel most cars a class and down do a good job of modeling grip characteristics in turns.

The thing with forza is that speed all looks the same so going 120mph looks the same as 70. Look at your speedo when going through turns and see how fast your going when u lose grip and u will realize that the grip characteristics are not far off

this, i find, is the biggest culprit. the sense of speed is bad in this game.
whats happening is people are going too fast into the corners. this causes the oversteer issue.
the physics are rather good. try putting on the braking only line in the assists tab. you will see you are braking too late and going too fast into the corners. couple this with the sensitivity of the controllers and its rather hard to drive.
just slow down more, everything will be much better. and be smother on you controller inputs.

I think I remember Dan saying something about it around FM3, that they didnt want to imput some kind of “effect”, to improve the sense of speed. Maybe they should.

The sense of speed might be improved if we could adjust the field of view, like in most sims.

For most street cars IRL braking late will cause under steer not over steer, as most street cars by design tend towards under steer. The grip does seem to be a little bit down from real life but the main thing is the physics in Forza they generally seem to be more touchy and sensitive than IRL and most sims. Thus you really have to be smoother than you would IRL or when driving the other sims.
