Test Track Air Field - Is Actually Very Good For Quick Tune/Build Testing

After running all of the tracks and testing the cars’ tunes, I have grown to like this track for tune evaluations for the following reasons:

  1. The RAMP at the end of front straight is the easiest feature/tool I have found for (somewhat) objective suspension balance.
  2. The track is FLAT (for camber evaluations)
  3. 2 long sweeping corners (cornering and power on/off car balance + aero balance)
  4. High amplitude bumps x 2 locations (ride height & suspension compliance)
  5. High speed chicane (suspension response)
  6. Hard brake corner (brake balance)
  7. Low speed (60mph) 180° corner (low speed mechanical grip)
  8. Short lap time (D class can be run in less than 1:10) = lap to lap comparison can be done very quickly.

Only 2 things that cannot be evaluated is the top speed & oval tune > which should be done at LeMans & Indy Oval anyways . . .

#1 & #50 LB times are (wanted to get #100 or #500 but too lazy to do it) + (Good target time to shoot for for most)
D - 1:04.313 / 1:06.338 (1:10)
C - 1:00.530 / 1:03.122 (1:07)
B - 0:57.979 / 1:00.382 (1:04)
A - 0:54.366 / 0:56.779 (1:01)
S - 0:52.394 / 0:55.328 (0:58)
R - 0:49.262 / 0:51.306 (0:54)
P - 0:41.677 / 0:44.336 (0:49)
X - 0:38.162 / 0:39.737 (0:44)

Thanks GRD! I have a couple of tunes I just started and will certainly check out THE Test Track Airfield.

Nice work, gets rid of having to hop between tracks to get a good baseline setup.

I used to really like the test track until GRD starting beating my times there. Now I hate it  Trying to squeeze that last tenth or two out of your times can be so frustrating on that track.

Are you running on the outskirts of the back half of the track? The game suggests that you should drive through the hanger, but that’s actually slower. Lol.

Honestly I prefer indy gp more because there are more technical corners that can really show how good the car’s balance is and if your car can stick the corner off without breaking traction or excessively letting off the gas.

I run the outside, not through the hangar. I don’t take the far outside path though as that is slower. I go through the light poles, before the tunnel. I have a 1:06.2 in D class and GRD beat me with a 1:06.05. Trying to push my car to its limits in order to get that .15 of a second has been driving me nuts. I can actually run in the 1:05’s but have not done it clean yet. Its amazing how many things there are on that track that you can slam into. I think I’ve hit them all multiple times. If I drive GRD’s Miata, I hit them all on one lap

Indy GP is a track that I’m just not very good at, but I do see your point in terms of tuning.

You’d gain 2-3 tenths by not letting off the gas in that last quick little left hander and taking a better line through the last corner. There shouldn’t be that much throttle play and definitely you should never be letting off the gas on exit. Use rewind to find the line that allows you to brake and then mash the gas off the corner. It’s a bit tricky to set it up right if that little left hander isn’t taken well.

I will give that a shot the next time I run that track. I think it just comes down to lack of skill on my part though. I’ve gotten a lot better over the past couple months, but getting higher than the top 40’s on the D class leaderboards is proving to be like trying to run through a brick wall for me. IIRC, I’m at #47 on the test track and I can easily live with that for now. I’m taking a break from D class for a while. I’ve got bigger fish to fry… I finally learned how to drive the rally motor properly and my assault on the C and B class leaderboards with it has begun  That motor even makes driving a Kia a lot of fun.

Yea D class can be tough. Just remember if you are hotlapping and you let off gas on the exit you are losing time. Sometimes its an easy fix and othertimes not.

The stock motor is good too for kia. That’s what I use.

Been there, done that! You could probably see my crash/skid marks on the track! I hit all of them so many times the track maintenance started charging me for damaged assets.

Once you are done at the Test Track Air Field, then you have Spa to look forward to . . . (yes, I know that you don’t need to be reminded of that too . . . )
