Team/coop endurance races

I thought about a new mode for endurance racing. An idea similar to those in the links below.

This idea could be linked also to the creation of clubs/teams as mentioned in the thread below.

As you know, there are 3 drivers in each team participating in real endurance races. That’s why I thought of introducing a multiplayer mode, where one car will be driven by several drivers.

In real races there are limits to the minimum and maximum time spent behind the wheel. Here, too, such limits would be needed. For example, for a race lasting 1h each player would have to drive a minimum of 15 minutes, but no more than 30. For longer races the limits would be scaled to the length of the race. Driver change would take place at the entry to the pit, after selecting the option and choosing a new driver. If any player failed to drive the minimum or exceeded the maximum, there would be a time penalty added to the final time.

I also thought about how the selection of drivers would take place. There would be a list of teams in the lobby. When creating a team, the founder would choose the car, team livery and also determine whether the team is private or open. Private teams would be joined only by the friends of the person who founded the team, after the founder sent them an invitation. Open teams would be open to all players, as long as the founder accepted such a player. Player ratings would be visible, so that the founder could have an overview of the player’s skills.

During the event (qualifying + race), the team would have a voice and text chat, so they could set tactics for the race and communicate about what is happening on the track.

All players from the team would take part in the qualification. The best time of each of them would count, from which the average time would be calculated to decide the starting position.

Such races could not be organized every day due to the small base of active players. That’s why a good solution would be to organize them on weekends.

I found two main problems with this idea:

  1. small base of active players
  2. the situation when a player is disconnected/leaves the game.

The first one can be solved with the development and repair of the game by T10 . The second would be more tricky. We would have to think about the best solution. A ghost/AI solution came to my mind.

  • If the player drove more than 2 laps, after disconnection, the AI would take control of the car and drive at the average speed of all completed laps. After completing the required minimum laps, the AI would go to the pit lane and control of the car would be taken over by the next player (selected randomly or by request).
  • if the disconnection/exit happened before the completion of the first lap, the AI would reach the pit lane with the speed from qualifying. At the end of the race, a time penalty would be added for not reaching the minimum.
  • If the disconnection/exit happened before the start of the race, only the remaining players would take part in the race. At the end of the race, a time penalty would be added for not reaching the minimum.
  • If during the race two players would leave/disconnect, such a team would be disqualified.

I think this idea would be an interesting development of the game and a good opportunity to get players more involved. If this mode took off, then you could think about developing it and creating an interesting alternative to the manufacturers’ championship from GT.

What do you think about it? Do you think such a thing would work?
