Sorry to ask, but... what's the point of this game?

Hi all.

I am new to modern racing games. In the past month or so I’ve been actively playing Dirt 4 and really enjoyed it until it became boring, so I decided to look for something new.

I looked on youtube and saw gameplay of a car that I like a lot - Civic fn2, which was in this game. After watching a couple of reviews that gave the game high praise, I went and bought it yesterday.

In the first 20-30 minutes, I was very excited. I could drive and tune the cars I always dreamt of, all with multiplayer!

But then, after completing the tutorial races, the confusion in me grew.

When I finally got into the multiplayer, I tried to figure out what am I supposed to do in this game. The races feel very arcade to me with very little realistic car behaviour (extremely high speeds, destroying obstacles). Tuning feels like I’m playing NFS Underground 1 again as all that’s expected from me is to just to spend the most money getting the most expensive (=best) parts.

I haven’t really been able to communicate with anyone as all seem to be doing their own thing (which im not sure what it is). I was sent a couple of racing invites but those felt very very arcade, I honestly feel like I’m playing GTA V of racing games.

I went and bought FN2 and upgraded it with the best parts but it feels very underwhelming and I’m not sure what’s the point of having those cars. The map feels small as I can drive from one edge to another in about 10 minutes maximum. I’m not feeling that there is a lot of skill involved in this game and I don’t see what kind of mission I could pursue in this game outside of collecting £££ to get the most expensive and fastest cars. I’ve also had a CL 65 and GT-R but couldn’t really ‘feel’ a very big difference between them, as in they move differently but overall they do the same job…

I am sorry if it feels like a rant and sorry if I just went to the wrong game and wrong community, maybe this game just isn’t for me?

The multiplayer is kind of 2 different worlds. You are automatically put into what is called a “Horizon life session” when the game loads where there is a number of other drivers in your session. If you want to race with them you can go to any race on the map and create a race. To be honest not many people usually join. The other part of multiplayer can be found in the pause menu. There is team and free for all adventure. You will have to go through the unranked portion in order to unlock ranked. Be prepared to get ran into and corner bombed constantly. It’s pretty awful.

As far as tuning there is more to it than just putting the best parts on each car. There is a whole separate section called tuning where you can adjust tire pressure, gearing and suspension, etc. In order to make some of these adjustments you do have to have certain parts installed. A large portion of the community switches their cars to AWD(located inside the upgrades section) so if you’re wondering why some people shoot off like a rocketship that’s why.

There are multiple reasons to play the game, you find your own reason. I like creating, and selling art, and using the Auction to make money, plus I race the Goliath track to improve my times, and improve my rating. I also enjoy the seasonal events, and I did enjoy finding the bonuses, but I have found them all now… I think.

Fahrvergnügen

Have to agree with this concept! The Forza Horizon series, especially FH2, FH3 & FH4 are definitely Fahrvergnügen or a fun of driving or a driving pleasure or a pleasure in driving in any language.

Wir verstehen gar kein Deutsch, auf Englisch bitte LOL

Thanks to a marketing campaign by Volkswagen in the US (and possibly other English speaking countries), I’m calling it a loanword.

I feel you.

I usually stay away from arcade racing games, but I love the idea of crusing around a vast open world with my favourite car, so I gave it a shot. And it is fun indeed. However, I constantly get reminded that FH is a series made for 12 year olds.

The game could really use some realism. Stop showering me with money and supercars, give me a sense of accomplishment. Force me to start out with some rusty [Mod Edit - Abbreviated profanity, profanity and profanity that is disguised but still alludes to the words are not permitted - D] with no money for upgrades. Force me to win races in order to progress. Punish me for crashing: Include repairs and make them a pain in the ass, giving me an incentive to drive skillfully. Cut out the silly banter where everybody tells me how cool I am.

I guess I’m not the game’s target audience.

If you want realism/simulation. then you need Forza MOTORSPORT. Horizon is absolutely supposed to be a more relaxed, do as you please driving game, with some simulation style support.

But then you can go into MP and the game is the opposite of relaxed. Instead, it’s a hyper-competitive, anything goes, all-out war. This game doesn’t fit into those boxes. It’s not always a casual game and it’s not always a hyper-competitive game … and it doesn’t always make sense.

It doesn’t always seem to have a point, either. Sometimes, it feels like it was intended just to be a driving game, and all the other decisions made (events, rivals, everything) were just intended to annoy and frustrate the customer base … as if somebody in charge hates people.

Don´t even encourage anyone ever for the mercy of god to play any kind of “competitive” racing in this particular game. There´s no competitive anything in this game just brainless throttle - brake throttle demolition derby promoting rude and toxic behaviour.

Optimal building and tuning is actually really hard and requires a lot of time, skill and experience. I suspect you haven’t yet got into the PI model and tried to build/tune the fastest car for a particular track at a given PI. It’s more work than anyone can manage before the next game comes out, you pretty much have to crowdsource the expertise e.g. via this forum or rivals leaderboards. It’s understandable that you haven’t got into this yet, as the game does a simply terrible job of explaining it all to players, e.g. it doesn’t tell you before you go into ranked adventure “hey, before you go in here, make sure you have a set of cars ready for A class dry road, wet road, snow covered road, dirt, wet dirt, snow covered dirt, cross country etc”. It doesn’t explain the PI system to the player. It doesn’t explain how the ranking system works. The player is expected to just figure all this stuff out by experimentation.

This thread is proving to me that people dont take the time to learn the game, routes, cars, etc. All these things can be figured out playing through the “campaign.” You have to be willing to try new things and find your niche.

I dont mind driving stock cars but i’d prefer not to. I’m used to my cars handling a certain way and that means tuning each car before I take it on the road. Transmission setup is probably the biggest upgrade for me and then suspension. Certain cars I can run on stock tires but gearing is a must.

If you take time to explore the effects of tuning you’ll find that’s not the case at all. The gamepad input algorithms are the bottleneck of diversity of experience. The tuning does lack finer points like diff types, clutch preload, high-speed damper valving, helper springs and so on… it’s the same in FM7… and there are some confusing/conflicting physics “features” such as chassis rigidity… overall FH4 has no competition if you want tuning with real results, on every car.

Suspension is the only must for me. Springs and anti-roll bars. Thanks to memories of FM4 and FH2, I don’t take the chance with anything. Neither will I drive a default race or rally setup. All but 2 or 3 sliders change drastically before I hit the gas.

You need to manage your expectations really. Yes, this game is arcadey, but it is supposed to be. The “reality” racer is Forza Motorsport 7.

If you say that different cars feel the same, man, I don’t know what to say or to help you, but you are very wrong.

About skill involved: Do you race vs unbeatable AI? At least in cross country this should be hard to beat. If you can easily beat AI, try to become No1 on the rivals leaderboard. I’ll check for your name and see how skillful you are. Feel free to message me, then we race together

I think the purpose is to do whatever you want. I like buying all the classics … 1979 & earlier. Then just cruising around. Mostly stock. Puttering around in a FIat 500 or trying to throw a American muscle car around, or driving a nimble British roadster or old Ferrari … just having fun. I don’t care much at all for S class and “playground games” like Virus or King, so I avoid online.

As far as I can tell, FH4 is a car collecting game with a racing minigame and vehicle sandbox on the side. The racing progression from earlier Forza games has largely been eliminated, so the only real overarching goal is to collect all the cars (and all the clothing, emotes and horns if you’re into that sort of thing).

The literal description: Horizon - Forza

More detail: Horizon - Forza

Side-note: The word “race” only appears once across both pages (in reference to Custom Race Routes). I guess racing isn’t the priority

Well, not 12 years old and enjoy the game. The game is an enthusiasts game. Once you dive into it and consider that it isnt about S2 cars on manicured tracks, enjoyment dramatically increases.

Arcadey feel-this can be mitigated.

So by default there is an anti yaw on your steering with keyboard or controller. Difficulty settings for steering helps a lot and some other settings really improve it.

Keep in mind that despite the things like wildly tuned basic vehicles and crashing walls, there is still a serious physics engine running. Unlike NFS, drifting and such really slows you down. Control is important… Outside of the chronic multiplayer issue of wallriding which a fix is in progress. Also some meta issues in the ranked adventure mode.

So when I am racing around, I am grip racing. It doesnt forgive mistakes. Many cars and routes give an exciting road race experience where if you cut corners or hit walls, you come in last. Yeah, car isnt destroyed unless you turn damage simulation on, but you still need to race proper.

This is all why cars are convenience. Perhaps too many, but it lets you use and tune the ones you want. If the civic isnt giving you the experience you want, ask about. Many of us can assist you in a build and tune you are looking for.

In terms of knowledge here, I have found V12 Sprungboss to be an active voice of insight and feedback.
