Solo racing - higher-numbered levels in the grid?

I’m new at the game and I drive only solo races, which means as I understand it I’m driving against a grid of AI drivatars. But I notice that while almost all the other drivers in the grid are at level 1 and obviously AI drivers, some of them have higher levels - 39, 52, 126, etc. So are those real people in those races, or does the game just sprinkle some higher numbers among the drivers in the grid for variety?

The game names drivertars after people in your friends list and will use their plate, avatar and liveries on the cars if they have played the game. As such, you will see that info on their name too. The drivertar icon is to the right edge when displayed.

Do they copy our attributes? Are they as skilled as us?

No. You can change their difficulty in settings.

As above, the difficulty is set by the game settings. However, and this is observational, certain ones of my friends list drivertars do consistently seem to do better. At a difficulty setting, the drivertars have a range of skill. So some will run slow, others will be faster. Certain peeps on my list that play seem to consistently be the better ones of the group.
