last night i did some more testing and this AI is very inconsistent. i finished C and B class, and won all the races, but some I barely won and others i won by 20+ seconds. Its not a big issue but its worth noting that their race laps are 4-6 seconds faster than their practice laps and THAT is annoying.
The complete destruction derby of the first lap has been toned down a decent bit since launch and the AI seems less likely to back off going into a corner than the first few months of the game (was easy enough to abuse tbh).
But it doesn’t feel like it’s changed much otherwise to me and doesn’t feel like an improvement over the AI from previous games.
I suppose they were trying to make the AI more “dynamic” and less predictable (in a good way), but it hasn’t worked out.
From what I’ve read online, it seems that GT7’s AI is better than Forza’s now and that AMS 2’s AI is supposed to be pretty good too. Both are games with a lot of varied content and AMS 2 has a very small budget and dev team.
I’ve got about 220 or so hours each in both FM and GT7. Always racing against AI (aside from just a test multiplayer race or two, literally just one or two races).
My only complaint with GT7 AI is that they will sometimes catch the rear corner of my car and spin me. It’s rare. And sometimes, I suspect it’s my own fault as I change position too close to the trailing car. But it happens.
The most common complaint I see with GT7 AI is that it’s a conga line. Many races start with the cars strung in a line around the track, in a rolling start.
This is true. But I can deal with this for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it fits decently with how many races in GT7 are presented. Many are just 2 or 3 laps, with some being 5 or more. The strung-out rolling start is not far from the situation I find myself in while playing ACC, about mid race. I’m mid-pack, cars are indeed strung out from the previous laps, and I’m pushing for that final lap or three.
Secondly, this presentation fits with how GT7 treats many race events, in terms of difficulty. The player is expected to perform fairly clean, mistake free driving on higher difficulty settings. Traffic challenges from AI factor in to this, as it’s not about hot-lapping. The “3 Pepper” to “5 Pepper” races are more demanding of perfection. Time wasted due to poor passes in traffic, or bad driving, is time the player cannot get back, which puts higher finishing position further out of reach.
Forza on the other hand treats each race a bit more realistically. More in a start-to-finish type race experience (as opposed to GT7 seeming like the player picked up mid-race). But the AI in both games will make allowances for the player to get ahead, and to stay ahead.
My complaint with FM AI is a feeling of sporadic incompetence. Driving off-track, into walls, completely off-line/pace, driving into other cars (both AI and my own). For no obvious reason.
It doesn’t happen all the time. It’s not every AI car. Just some of them, some of the time. But enough that I am often feeling incredibly annoyed. Annoyed to the point of turning off FM and driving another game.
There have been a good few improvements. It was way worse a year ago. Maybe another year they can get it improved to higher standards.
I would have to disagree. Have you raced on bathurst yet, turn 1, disaster. Pretty much any track with a 90 degree turn 1 is exactly the same. Even if theres no contact, or at least none you can see, they are going extremely slow.
They just cant race eachother, i dont know if a processing issue or theyre just dumb, but they are just not capable of doing what theyre supposed to do.
A common thing you hear about the ai, is that theyre better in space, i certainly hope they would be. But even then they can do nonsensical things. I used to set up races with staggered starts and that did make races better, but i dont really care anymore as it doesnt really matter in the long run.
AMS2 has great AI. They’ll hold two or three wide, will undercut, defend, and be aggressive.
I haven’t played the new 1.6 update, but prior, I had rare issues where they’d clip your rear bumper on some of the tighter chicanes which could end up pitting you. That, and it was too easy to overtake under braking zones. Not sure if they’ve fixed these problems.
But most of their AI tweaks are on fine-tuning issues, like rain impact, tire wear, aggression, etc.
It’s probably the king when it comes to satisfying offline play. Just nowhere near as playable as Forza on a gamepad.
I like to spam this clip of mine to show off its AI.
Yeah, AMS2’s AI is such a joy to race against. It’s so nice to have sliders with the ability to adjust opponent speed and aggression in tiny increments. And now with 1.6, there’s also a slider for AI’s likelihood to make mistakes. It’s definitely become my go-to for track racing.
p.s. Nice save at 5:55!
I really want to give 1.6 a go… been experiencing it vicariously through GPLaps on YouTube.
In a weird way, I’m afraid that it’ll turn me off of FM once I get back into it. Every time I do, it highlights things that feel lacking and “off.” I’ve been spending the past few months building up a good rhythm in FM and feel like that gets reset whenever I reacquaint myself with the usual sims. So I’m holding out, since I’m honestly enjoying featured multiplayer as of late.
And thanks man! Thought I was going to bin the whole thing in that corner.
Anyone have issues with the first race (Grand Oak) for this week’s Featured Career series? I had the difficulty set to 3 and for some reason first place kept getting 10-15 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack by the end of the race (I settled for second). Every other race was fine, I even did the last race (Maple Valley) at my usual difficulty setting (4) and it felt like a reasonable normal/competitive difficulty compared to whatever happened in the first one.
since the update the lead car has been insane, the better you race the faster he goes.
i ended up turning it down to 2 and win by 30 seconds plus, much less frustrating than racing against horizon 5 AI that they just implanted in this game.
Haven’t got around to doing races in Bathurst yet, but I’m not too surprised to hear that.
Just some shots of the difference in AI vs the player in terms of steering aggression. They turn a lot more than the player in similar situations. This turn was at Spa and I was alongside of the AI when starting the turn. Aside from how little space I had, and that they AI could have capitalized on the turn switching back towards their direction, instead they over committed to the turn, and didn’t straighten up a little bit to give them a little more momentum coming into the lefthander that followed this turn.
Here are the pictures.
My steering angle…
The A.I’s steering angle…
Difference in tire angles…
The A.I. is turning as if I am not there. Don’t worry they made contact with my car on the following turn and sent me off into the dirt. But I wasn’t surprised. LOL
If I liked how the game felt, I’d play more of it but, AMS2 just feels off to me. I’d rather play R3E or Forza before AMS2.
When’s the last time you played it? They reworked the physics quite a bit for the latest 1.6 release. Might be worth giving it another go to see what you think.
They reduced the amount of front-end grip abuse you could previously do and overdriving of the rear wheels. But I weirdly loved that. Made me ever drive a hero moment lol. But you’re on a wheel right? Thought the FFB matched the best of them, but I get your point
This morning.
Fair enough then. Diff’rent strokes.
Yes, I think this is the main issue with AI. They are too conservative when they drive in group, close to each other. This results in excessive slowing down in corners. Ok, it would be normal to reduce the speed around corners when racing close to other cars. The AI is just too slow than it should be in those situations and seems very unrealistic.
However, AI is fast enough when racing at sufficient distance from other cars.
In Free Play the Ai is hands down the WORST it’s ever been. Set it to 2, they’re horrible at cornering, but rockets in straights. 3 - can corner a bit better but still rockets in straights. It goes on and on like this throughout the difficulty range. Drives me absolutely mad. There’s always about 5 or more that have PI levels well above mine and they behave like they’re programmed to hit me just to show off the fancy new damage nonsense. I cannot get through a race without being hit. Love when I’m pulling away from them and they get a magic burst of speed to pull ahead.
Ai in career, different story. I can set that to 8 and absolutely mop them.
I’m so close to just quitting this nonsense and sticking with GT7 until AC Evo arrives.
Forza just isn’t what it used to be. At all.
i’ve had the exact opposite result in my game, super easy Ai in free play, frustratingly hard in career mode. I can’t stand the unpredictable nature of this AI
