SARD MC8
This topic is for the one-off road car. For the Race Car, please click here.
Also called the SARD MC8 and MC8-R (for the Race Car).
An incredibly modified 1995 Toyota MR2 SW20 built to replace the Group C Efforts of Toyota alongside the JZA80 Supra at Le Mans.
Only one Road Car was built to Homologate the Race Version for use and so it’s an incredibly rare and valuable collectors item at this point in time.
The Rear of the Car was lengthened 400mm and had a tube frame added for Support in order to increase stability at high speeds.
The Size increase of the Chassis also allowed designers to take the 4.0L 1UZ-FE V8 Engine from the Toyota Aristo and Lexus LS 400 allowing for a much needed boost to power output.
The MC8-R Versions that raced at Le Mans were also fitted with Twin-Turbo’s in an attempt to make them more competitive with their contemporaries but the Road-Spec MC8 was left Naturally Aspirated.
The Original MC8-R from 1995 weighed only 1273kg (2806 lbs) and produced around 570-580hp. Further versions got the weight down even lower to 1061kg (2339lbs) in 1996 and then in 1997 they got it down even more to 1000kg (2204lbs) and increased power output to around 655hp.
Unfortunately despite their performance increased the car wasn’t successful in Racing. In 1995 the Car had to retire from LeMans due to Clutch Failure in their 6-Speed Hewland Transmission. In 1996 they returned with a more improved 5-Speed March Engineering Transmission Unit but failed to improve on pace and only managed to finish 2nd to last overall.
In 1997 they returned to LeMans with even more Performance Improvements but failed to Qualify and considering they were still not nowhere near catching up to Competition such as the McLaren F1 and Porsche 911 GT1 the SARD Team decided end the program.
The Current MC8 Road Car is in possession of a Collector in Japan who still drives it following some updates to the Safety to bring it up to modern standards.
