Rivals - What is the expected behavior of "Set as Rival" and "Set as Training Ghost"?

I have noticed that if I go to the leaderboard and manually “Set as rival” for a player, the rival doesn’t update even after I beat that time. This is behavior that is expected of “Set as Training Ghost” instead.

If I don’t manually choose a rival, and use the one the game chooses, it works as expected. The problem is that the rival that is automatically selected defaults to someone from your friend list. I only have a handful of friends, and they are much faster than me, so racing their ghost is not very meaningful for me.

Is this the expected behavior?

You can set as rival as yourself and yourself gets updated as you beat yourself.

I do this often & I wish it was the default.

This is my favourite way to improve as you see your mistakes on every corner, every lap. Using someone else’s ghost with a different car only sets me up for failure as their car (or tune) behaves differently.

I do this sometimes, but honestly, I’m usually bad at figuring out what needs to improve in my own run. Watching the replay of others doesn’t help as much because it doesn’t show you the time (another thing the game needs to improve - the whole replay system needs to be revamped), so I need their ghost on track.

I do agree that sometimes racing others is unhelpful because of different tune/car.
