Race Etiquette

In my opinion you didnt do anything wrong. If you’re in the lead car, it’s the passing car’s responsibility to get around you without causing any incidents. If he was really faster than your car, he would be able to get you on that straight.

Part of racing is knowing when to pass, not only so you don’t ruin someone else’s race, but so you don’t ruin your own too. (I’m not speaking about anyone in particular, I speak of the figurative “you.”)

Some folks get road rage. Dont worry about it. In fact, that is a chief reason why I never talk in online lobbies and I won’t even put my headset on my ear. I don’t care what others have to say, I try my best to not cause incidents and that’s that.

I’m not about to sit around and argue with people.

It’s tricky to gauge when to yield and when to stick with it. I was in a lobby yesterday at the start of lap #2 there was not a soul in my mirrors half way round this car caught up with me like I was standstill so I moved aside, eased off the gas and let him by. His lap times were 5 secs quicker than mine. In a four or five lap race and I’ve got somebody in my boot (trunk) early on, ill let them pass just to see if I’ve got what it takes to keep up and partly to see if I can, what they are like under pressure.

But essentially don’t take abuse from keyboard warriors, just block them and move on. I’ve met a helluva lot of nice, friendly drivers out there.

Maybe you actually kicked the rear out into him? Maybe there was lag?

some people just want to watch the world burn!!

You get it sometimes and the people that you hit by mistake(and you can tell its a mistake. i.e in a slower class but still block you and you clip) and then they come back at you and take you out they need something i cant say on here

Hold your line. Its a simple rule that works well.

I’ve learned also to look back frequently when someone is on my butt or closing so as not to swerve to the faster line too soon.

Most people have no clue as to what racing etiquette is. You should pursue one blocking move per advance and it is up to the passing car to make a safe pass. Online is cluttered with people that don’t understand that concept or the one that if you are the pursuing car coming to a turn and you are not half the car length of the lead car then you need to submit the racing line, not “gran turismo” them.

From your discription you sound as though you were in the right, but there is a constant unknown variable of lag, which can look normal but cause issues. However in the other linked video, that was definitely intentional and I block people when they do such childish actions. The bad part is that when it happens constantly, you start to adapt to it and sometimes by doing the same actions. I have to constantly remind myself to not sink to that level.

I’ve had that, and things a whole lot worse than that happen to me. That one would probably make me revenge. I know I shouldn’t, you know I shouldn’t, but… Still.

Regarding the lag comments, I suppose it is possible. I do get the “weak connection” message a lot. Unfortunately, I’m not at a place where getting a lightning fast cable modem is an option.

If that is the case, then, I probably will give multiplayer a miss and stick with rivals. Jerks or not, I don’t want to ruin the experience of others if my flying car is screwing things up.

Thanks for the feedback, all!

Dont give online a miss just because of lag, A friend of mine has lag very frequently and gets the “weak network connection” multiple times in a night of racing, we can be separated by tenths on lap times and its the same in a race, he lags and his car can “move” around a bit, but im yet to have a issue where his lagging has cause me any ill effects

I probably won’t quit it permanently, Daz. Maybe just take a break. Fact is, I only have so much time to play and there are some rival things I want to try. Worm created a tune for the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale that looks to me like an “acceleration monster” that I’m very interested to try.

Regarding lag, I’ve ordered a repeater which I hope will help things. My (cheap, lousy) wireless router is not in the same room as the XB1. So, I’ll often only get two bars or so on XB1. Hoping a repeater will help boost the signal to the XB1 and improve my lag issues.

Never retaliate. I did, once. After a couple hours of dealing with these idiots, race after race, I was on this guy’s bumper for 2 laps of Yas. I finally passed him, clean, on the zigzag. Very next corner, he uses my car as his brakes, retaking the position while I bounce off the wall. Half a lap later, I caught up and put him on the damn moon. Straight up rammed him at 120 mph.

Didn’t get reported or anything, but I felt so bad about “sinking to their level” I had to stop racing for the evening.

I try really hard not to let people get under my skin but i must confess i have done my worst to some people. It feels really good at first but then i feel dirty and have to shower and find a new lobby lol.

Yeah, it can go from “yo, SCREW that guy” to “man, I shouldn’t have done THAT” pretty fast sometimes…

New to the forums, Doesn’t seem like you did anything wrong to me!

I have a video of one of my earlier races, I got spun around at Bathurst by somebody I overtook cleanly on lap #2 I caught up with him and T boned him on the end of the last long straight. I feel badly for this because I’ve had a lot worse happen since but I don’t retaliate nowadays. I can’t bring myself to delete the footage though.

Coming down the mountain on bathurst is probably one of the hardest places I know to attempt to overtake someone, best to wait until conrod straight.
