Thank you all for the informative and insightful comments and recommendations.
The most telling was that finger/thumb reflexes are indeed faster than feet/wheel reflexes and is likely the primary cause of reduced lap times. I will probably continue to use the wheel for realism and overall game enjoyment, and the controller for competitive game play.
Kudo’s to this forum and the participants, it’s an amazing resource!
Hopefully the comments here satisfy your curiosity with the wheel and save you some time and growing pains. I went through the same questions with FM4 and figured out this for me: wheel < wireless controller < wired 360 controller. Now I’m back with FM6 and I skipped trying a wheel.
The xbox1 wireless controller, I found out the long way, is still not as good as wired. There was no good wired xbox1 controller available so I started using the wireless. With news of the new Fusion One controller, which is wired, I looked into it more and found out from an article in 2013 that the xbox1 wireless controller lag is improved by 20%. The article also said if you plugged the controller in to USB then the lag is 100% gone. The lag in xbox 360 wireless controller was undriveable. Now with the xbox1 controller in wireless mode I had to use “normal” steering as I think this helps control the lag effect. But the lag is still there and with faster rear wheel drive cars it felt like controls were too mushy and normal mode was necessary as it helped with the situations such as where the car would swing left and right out of control and you’re trying to correct it with a laggy controller, which is impossible. Plugging the controller in (I also removed the battery) helped this situation tremendously as now I drive under simulated mode and all inputs are more direct, crisp and precise including correcting mistakes, braking into turns and acceleration out. Try it and you’ll never go back.
Now I’m curious about the standard controller (plugged in) vs. Elite controller (plugged in) vs. the Fusion One controller… so more growing pains to come.
