[POLL] The Idea of DLC

Hey guys,

DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind that this is not a wishlist thread. If you’d like to make a recommendation for a track that you think should be included in the game, please make a post here. Likewise, if you’d like a car included in the game, the appropriate place to make a post can be found here.

I wanted to poll the community and gauge the interest and opinions regarding some ideas I had. I’d like to get answers to some questions and have a discussion about it. If you choose to make a post, I would appreciate if you could answer the the questions (the only answers available are YES, NO, and MAYBE) and if you choose to do so, explain why you chose the way you did.

In our discussion, please be polite, courteous, and please refrain from turning this into a wishlist thread.

Here are my thoughts - Forza Motorsport 6 is a fantastic game. The physics engine has made Forza become the best console racing game you can buy. The graphics are beautiful, there isn’t a game on the [racing] game on the Xbox that looks as pretty as Forza. Forza Motorsport 6 is truly fantastic but that comes at a cost - haven’t they said they are using everything the Xbox One has to offer?
Instead of a two-year turnaround and a new Forza Motorsport title releasing in a couple of years I would personally love to see a longer life cycle and support for Forza Motorsport 6.

The way I see it, if plans stay the same and the past is any indication of the way forward, in two years we will see the release of Forza Motorsport 7. Some tracks in this game will be missing and there will be some new ones. it will launch with most of the cars available in Forza Motorsport 6. Will it be any prettier? Will the car handling be more realistic? What more will Turn10 squeeze out of the Xbox One console? I think that there are a few things that need to be patched or altered on FM6 but it’s a very, very good game. I would hate to see it fall to the wayside for what I see as basically being FM6.5 - but, things don’t have to go this way. Sure, Forza Motorsport 7 may come out with all the tracks and cars we have now and then even more content but if that’s the case, would the price of the base game go up? If the price stays the same, would Turn10 put in more content? I would love to see perhaps no new game come out but instead have Turn10 focus on the one out now. Let’s add lots of cars as DLC. Let’s add tracks as DLC.

There are many tracks around the world that have either been in past Forza titles and are no longer included, or are available for use in other games but have not made their way to Forza. I would love to see more of these tracks make an appearance and I understand that that costs money. In Forza Motorsport 5 Turn10 released the Nurburgring and Long Beach as track expansions. We already know that there will be at least 6 months of car pack DLC. After that,I would be very receptive to the idea of track DLC. If it included 1 track and even a few cars, I would personally be willing to pay $9.99 - $19.99 per DLC.

We already have the Car Pass which allows you to purchase 6 months worth of Car DLC for a slight discount. You can opt to but each DLC separately as well. What if a couple of months after the life of the Car Pass we could purchase a Track Pass. iRacing charges $11.99 for most tracks and some larger or more complicated ones sell for $14.99 for access. Let’s just move forward with the idea that one track DLC would contain 1 track with all available ribbons and 3 cars and they cost $14.99. If Turn10 decided to support Forza Motorsport 6 for an extended period of time, they could go on to produce 5 - 10 additional tracks. If there were 10 DLC of this nature that would essentially be the same in terms of cost - to us, the user - as one to two games. Now imagine if some of these tracks are tracks that don’t need to be laser scanned because they aren’t real. Sure, they may have to be touched up and worked on but no travelling to location, no laser scanning, no extra modelling, none of the more costly and complicated procedures would be necessary. Hey, why not - what if Turn10 brought back one fantasy track from each of the 4 titles (all from FM5 are in FM6) and one extra for good measure then hey would only have to go through and rework 5 real world tracks. Who’s to say they aren’t already working on that?

In the end, I would rather see a longer life span and spend more of my money on additional content to Forza Motorsport 6 than purchase Forza Motorsport 7 if it doesn’t significantly improve or increase the content over the current version. This would be even more true one some of the issues we face now have been resolved.

  1. Of course, although I don’t know the reason why we don’t have any Japanese tracks.
  2. Maple Valley! Ditch the Alps and give us Maple back. And Kaido. (OK that was a bit wishlist-y, it’s a yes)
  3. Sure, I see a decent few American tracks, wouldn’t mind extra. Will we ever see the Isle of Man TT course in a game?
  4. If all other options are exhausted, sure.
  5. Probably…
  6. …something reasonable! In line with what we have now and had before.

I’d love to know why we don’t have the Japanese tracks. I think it’s one of a few reasons:

(1) Licensing: If it’s licensing, I wish Turn 10 would tell us. Why continue to have players blow up the wishlist thread with requests for something they know they cannot do. Good communication is important. If it’s a licensing issue and Turn10 told us that, we could show the owners/license holders that we have an interest in the track, that we would love to see it in the game, and that it would be nice in they allowed Turn10 to model the track for their game. Naturally, this would cost money so we’d have to pay for it as either a DLC a new game.

(2) Cost: Renting a track is expensive. Travelling to Japan is expensive. I looked into going there this summer with my wife and the airfare alone was around $1200 per person. Now imagine having to fly several people, laser scanning equipment, other electronic equipment, renting a track for several days to laser scan. Those expenses add up. Laser scanning means no cars can be on the track so it may cost more than when companies want to rent the track and run cars on it - multiple cars can be running at once and multiple entities can rent a track at the same time so the cost is lower.

Still with the backing of Microsoft and a potential $60 million net income (assuming $59.99 per game - or local equivalent - and 1 million copies sold) that should be possible, it only takes time.

(3) Desire: Perhaps there are some tracks that Turn10 do not care for and do not wish to see included in their game.

Again, chances are that Turn10 are working on new tracks as we speak. Chances are they will include some in Forza Motorsport 7. The thing is, if past titles are an indicator we’ll get some new tracks but we will lose others with the new game release. Hopefully, this isn’t the case with FM7 and the amount of content only increases. If that’s the case, does the base price of the game remain the same though?

As I said, I’d rather spend my money on increasing the content available for the current game than releasing a new game that is almost indistinguishable from the current version except in included content. Right?

If I were to speculate I’d say it would be licensing. It stands out a bit, how there are no Japanese tracks at all. Considering T10 trek all across the globe I’d say travel costs can’t be such a massive factor. Also PD sent a team to my little island here, with bundles of kit on them, to see if they could possibly do all 37.7 miles of the course!

I’d like to think T10 would love to have all the tracks on a game with all the cars, but whether they have the resources is another thing. I’d be surprised if they were at all lacking in that department. I’m glad I skipped FM5 as with half the content and infrastructure it’s basically an extended demo for what this game is. I guess we’ll find out more as factors are eliminated or new ones are brought into light.

As of now, there are enough new tracks to discover. But after months and months of playing, it is still getting boring doing the same tracks over and over again. as said, i have no problem to pay for the new ones, but they should be in forza 7 like the forza 5 add on tracks

Actually, we may not lose tracks if more are added. The game can be much larger than what can fit on a BluRay disc. It generally is after all DLC is bought and downloaded. So it isn’t unreasonable for a large fictional track like Fujimi Kaido to make an appearance as DLC for FM6 later on. Likewise, adding more real world tracks like Goodwood is very possible.

As for Japanese tracks, It could be that a team went to Japan to scan several tracks on one trip. Scheduling would have been a nightmare, but would have cost less than making several trips. It might just be that they weren’t able to get that done in time for launch but will be included at some later date, either for free or as DLC.

  2. MAYBE. The determining factors would include “is it any good?” and “are night and/or wet conditions available?”
  3. YES.
  4. If it was priced similarly to a car pack ($5-$6), that’d be about right. If it was a BIG track (Isle of MAN or something like that), or had a car pack included (like the FM5 add-on circuits did) they could justify asking a bit more.

Since playing from F2 my answers are below:

(1) Yes, better than some of the sterile new age tracks that pervade F1 nowadays.
(2) Yes, a great fan of them from previous incarnations.
(3) Yes, careful choice needed as they are much of a muchness if talking about modern F1 tracks.
(4) Yes, short track oval on tarmac or shale and Rally Cross…
(5) Yes as it would have to be done due to costing of compiling, scanning etc.

I’d rather have track DLC free, along paid track expension car pack (like FM5).

  1. Sure.
  2. I still think fondly of Almafi. Good ol’ FM3.
  3. Of course.
  4. If they’re good.
  5. Depends on how reasonable it is. See #6.
  6. Stand-alone? Maybe $5, and I’d hope that it gets incorporated into career/has achievements etc., basically, something to look forward to in buying it over “Hey, here’s a new track, have fun, kay, kay bye!” A car pack to go along with it would be cool as well.

I also wouldn’t mind higher-priced expansions. Now when I say higher priced, I mean in the neighborhood of $10-$20, I suppose you could stretch it a little more, but let’s not get carried away. Maybe, MAYBE, a discount for VIP members or something.

What would be in said expansion? A theoretical example.

“Japanese Legends Expansion Pack” (name it whatever you want). Three-to-five Japanese tracks (real and fictional, lets say Suzuka, Motegi, Tsukuba, and Fujimi Kaido), have them be integrated in Career and Leagues as well as have their own little category/branch. With that include 10-20 cars, including several current (and past) Super GT cars, some other notable Japanese race cars (TS040, R390 GT1, etc.) and throw in a few Japanese street cars. All of this also comes with a special Multiplayer lobby featuring these tracks, Rivals events, achievements (Drive 150 miles in the Lexus RC F GT500 on Suzuka Circuit, Own all cars from the Japanese Legends Expansion Pack, etc.).

Edit: Speaking of integrating into Career, you can have new Showcase events that utilize these cars and tracks (Suzuka 200 Endurance, R390 at Le Mans, others)

I think that would be a cool expansion that many people would like. As said earlier though, that’s just a theoretical example.

  5. No. Making them pay-only DLC splits the community and makes them inferior options for Multiplayer. Gran Turismo 6 provided new tracks as free/mandatory updates and they were used just as often as the vanilla tracks as a result.

(6) $5-$20, depending on how many ribbons are included and the size of them. $20 seem fairly reasonable for something like a pack that has all of the old snake test tracks. Something like Mugello long and short, I think $10 would be reasonable. Suzuka’s 3 ribbons, up to $15. <–not a wishlist, just using these as examples

Yes absolutely.
Not as much as real world.
Yes
Depending on how they are done.
Only if they are implemented into multiplayer racing somehow. If not, I’m less interested.

I’d be willing to pay upwards of $30, if it was an expansion pack level of tracks that really interested me. But only really if they are integrated in multiplayer the right way.

(1) Would you like to see real-world tracks from past titles return to Forza?

I feel that Japanese tracks are a huge omission in the current gen Forza games, and the three tracks the series once had from that region really are staples of eastern racing. They should definitely return.

Aside from them though? I’d like to see others return, but I’d rather have new tracks. Sadly the real-world tracks I have the least interest in are also the ones that Turn 10 seems to like the most, putting them on the priority list for Forza 5’s launch.

(2) Would you like to see fantasy tracks from past titles return to Forza?

As much as I’d like to see Kaido (i’m fairly indifferent to Forza’s other fictional circuits honestly), at the same time, I like the new real-world oriented direction that Forza Motorsport has taken lately, looking to recreate real motorsport events rather than just feel like continuous track days with random cars on random tracks. If in Forza 7 they ditched all the fantasy tracks and in return brought a full roster of exciting real-world circuits, I’d be delighted.

(3) Would you like to see new real-world tracks come to Forza?

Of course! New content is always interesting to see. Plus it means we get to see some great non-US tracks, since Turn 10 are quickly exhausting all the interesting ones in America, ha.

(4) Would you like to see new fantasy tracks come to Forza?

Not really. Spend the time making real circuits please. =)

(5) Would you be willing to pay for new tracks to be added to Forza Motorsport 6 as DLC?

Depends on the track. It would have to be one that I actually have a relationship with.

(6) If you answered yes to (5), how much money would you be willing to pay on a per-track basis?

Also depends on the length and complexity of the track. If, hypothetically, they added Kaido as DLC, I’d pay as much as £20. For a shorter track with less fancy roadside objects like Tsukuba though, £8. With rain effects I’d add 25-50% to the price of the track, though night effects kinda write themselves. A track like Kaido wouldn’t really have any lights anyway so it wouldn’t make sense to proportionally increase the value.
