Dear Forza Horizon Team, I’ve recently been experiencing constant overheating on my Series S after 1 hour of playing time. I notice that shortly before I start the game the fan becomes very loud and it doesn’t get any better. After a while the console switches itself off to prevent overheating. I’ve tried out several games in this regard, particularly large games that require a lot of power, and the Xbox Series S works properly without affecting the fan or the console’s performance. I put the console on a high shelf so that the air circulation is correct and the console is properly ventilated. I tested FH5 in graphics mode and performance mode. In graphics mode the console overheats after 30 minutes of running time and in performance mode it overheats after just under an hour before the console switches itself off again due to overheating. To make it understandable. When you start the game the fan starts to speed up extremely quickly, which shows that the console has to use an extremely high amount of power, which has a huge impact on the cooling because the fan is simultaneously busy keeping the temperature stable. Accordingly, I have a request: would it be possible to minimize the performance to do the console a favor and so that the game can be played properly again? Best regards
Clean your console, don’t place it on carpet, give it room to breathe.
Overheating seems to not be a significant problem for the Series consoles as you can’t really find much information online, this makes me think that your console either has some dust clogging up the system, or the temperature in your room is too high.
After using my Xbox One X for 4 years I decided to open it up and clean it out and surprisingly found nearly no dust except for a minor film of dust that didn’t hinder the air from getting through the system at all. Now considering the Series S and the One X are really similar in their ventilation system, I would guess that you won’t find much dust in the system either and considering that I broke “eject disk” button when I put it back together as these consoles aren’t meant to be opened up, I would not suggest you to try that.
One thing I can highly suggest is to put a generic fan and make it blow at your console. This way you can make sure the air in your room isn’t stagnant.
You can also try to go into the settings and put the system to 60hz if you’re not already using that, this might lower the heat production a little.
That is: Settings - General - TV & display options - Video fidelity & overscan → and then select HDMI under the Display Overrides options
And then: Settings - General - TV & display options → and now you can select lower graphics options like 1080p and 60Hz
I’m not entirely sure, but I heard you can manually turn off HDR too, but I don’t know how crappy the graphics will look.
To this you can find various tutorials on youtube.
As a last resort: Something that I did with my Xbox 360S which had constant overheating problems, is to put a big glass or jar full of ice and water at the air intake, this is definitely more experimental but it extended my time before the next overheating from 20 mins to 2h.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the great tip, but to be more specific, the overheating only occurs after 20 minutes of play time with FH5. When I play other large games that also require power, the Series S runs perfectly as it should. And as I mentioned above, it is on a shelf next to a window where it is well ventilated. I also installed a small raised area under the console so that the console gets good air circulation. Despite this, the console only overheats with FH5. I don’t know what to do myself. I would like to be able to play FH5 properly again, but it’s almost impossible because of the overheating. The overheating only occurs there. So you can indirectly rule out dust. Because in my opinion it’s a mistake. I also mentioned above that as soon as I start Forza Horzion 5 on my Series S, the fan starts up and becomes extremely loud, so loud that I notice when I go to the console that it immediately gets hot.
did you read the post? I explicitly mentioned that it is on a shelf and not on a carpet I also mentioned that the overheating only occurs with FH5, nowhere else no matter how long I play, so you can rule out dust
That is really strange, I guess the Forza support can’t really help with such a specific case. The only other thing that comes to my mind is reinstalling the game and hoping that resolves the issue.
Hope you get a fix soon.
I did some research and since Forza Horizon 5 uses the old engine from FH4, it could well be that there are similar problems on the Series S. I have also tested motorsports and there are no problems with overheating. I have also ordered an additional fan for the Series S. I hope that I can protect my console with it… it is very important to me.
Hi.
This isn’t related to the forzatech engine.
Is your game up to date?
Have you tried to clean the cache?
Also i should warn you that your console should not be under the sunlight.
Hello,
I would recommend reaching out to Official Support for Xbox to assist you with this issue,
Thank you,
Hi @LonLinEss6765 . Is the FH5 the only game that makes your console overheat? Try other games as well.
