Here’s my take on the 1983 GMC Vandura G-1500. The van is a replica of a 1972 Chevrolet Van called “Van on the Run” from Canada, Ontario and painted by famous Canadian automotive painter Ken Kay. The name of the van being a play on words of the song Band on the Run by Paul McCartney released in 1973. Both the GMC and Chevrolet vans look similar in terms of body style and length which made replicating this possible. The van features four different murals and two different shaped banners.
Starting with the drivers side of the van, we have a mural with a cowboy and horses walking through the desert at dawn with the stars still up in the sky and the sun just starting to come up and peak over the mountains casting shadows on the objects below. Other details include the van’s name, birds flying overhead with cactuses and cow skulls on the desert ground, a wagon wheel in the dirt and the horses footprints.
On the passenger side of the mural is a cowboy horseback riding at sunset with the sun going down behind the mountains casting shadows on everything below. Other details include the vans name, cactuses and cow skulls on the desert ground, a wagon wheel in the dirt, birds overhead, horse footprints and a fallen tree.
A stripe with a rainbow of colourful bubbles in it go around the van up to the hood and a detailed banner on both sides making it look like you just crossed the finish line and broke the banner. Other details include white and red pinstripes, swirls behind the banner and three white stars on both sides around the banner.
On the hood of the van is another mural this time with a portrait of the van itself and the owners hanging out the windows going down a winding road kicking up dust with mountains and trees all around and the vans name once again present, also included is birds and black and white clouds overhead. To finish off the front of the van a custom era correct “Keep on Vannin” license plate was added to the front bumper.
On the rear of the van is a mysterious face on the back doors with white pinstripes on the upper corners of both sides. This livery took over 6 months to do with trying to find good enough quality photos of the real van a big challenge.
